  1. "What's It" Basic Rules Reminder For a full run down on this project and rules please go to: "The Patriot Woodworker and MWTCA "What's It" project" Only Patriot Woodworker Members are eligible to participate and receive the award. The MWTCA only accepts a verified source to support your answer, so one should be submitted with your answer, such as a patent, catalog entry, tool book reference, or a respectable website on the subject. Do not let these requirements prevent you from having fun and submitting educated answers on the subject without verification, we can worry about references later. All answers are welcome, as well as healthy debates regarding "What's It". If a verified and referenced answer is not arrived at by the end of each month's "What's It" project, a random draw will be performed for a "One Year MWTCA Club Membership". Only Patriot Woodworker's who participate in this "What's It" topic will be included in the random draw. Additional What's It Rules Unless you are completely sure what this item is, please avoid "definitive statements" that appear that you are without a doubt claiming that you know what the item is. For example stating, "this item is called a "widget xx" used for "insert purpose here". If you are making a definitive statement you must accompany your statement with evidence or proof from a secondary source. An example of acceptable statements within the realm of having fun and educated guesses would be something like this, "I believe it could be", or "It appears it's made for this or that", etc etc etc... Ok ladies and gentlemen, we now have our "What's it" live and ready! The image(s) below is a MWTCA "What's It" image for you to research, and tell us all here in this topic post, just what the heck is it! Project Details The information provided hereon is all the information that is provided, no further information on this item will be added.
  2. From the album: John Morris's Hand Tools

I have been blessed with a bounty of hand tools and wood these past few weeks, it's a long story, after returning from my latest trip, and after sorting through the tools, I found this infill plane among many other gems. It's a 1" Infill shoulder plane. At this time I cannot see any markings, the hand plane is ready to use now, the edge is excellent and the body is square and solid. I love this plane, and I'll use it. 7.5" long by 3" tall, heavy with a square sole to side for accurate registration. Can't wait to use it!
  3. Finished up the Christmas goodies today. I made some lidded bowls and mounted ceramic ducks on the lids. I've had these ducks for years and this year decided to use them. The lids are brass made from some salvaged door kick plates. I used my metal lathe to turn the brass sheet into round discs after roughing them out at the band saw in the metal shop. The lids are roughly 5 1/2". The lathe is a 6" max so rough cut had to be under the 6" limit. I had nine ducks ergo there are nine bowls. Black Walnut and Cherry are the wood species.
  4. While doing a bit of clean up in the shop, while waiting on the gas meters to be switched out ( inside for a new outside one) found this...thing.. The brass end has a logo of sorts... U.S. A.A.F. While down at the other end... There is a N O 2. There is other markings around the other side...from what I can make out.. GEO WORTHINGTON CO BUFFALO NY USA Now, about that chuck... Even my smallest chuck keys look HUGE, compared to this chuck...not sure what size jacob key this takes, or where one might be found..chuck works fine, just can't lock a bit into it... had to clean the rust spots off, oil things up a bit. So...what is this thing from WW2
  5. From the album: Simple little Cherry Box

Showing the hinges used, and a bit of grain, too
  6. I get Tom Fidgen's Newsletter in my inbox and I always look forward to it. Tom is a hand made by hand tool guy, long story short, great stuff, beautiful work, I have been following him for along time. In the most recent newsletter he is advertising his new Two Handled Rasps, these are beautiful tools, I want them, I gotta have them, don't know how yet, but some day I'll have them in my shop. These tools just make sense, with their two handles, stitched rasp, these are made for accurate stock removal. I have no horse in the game here, I just love beautiful tools is all. Here they are. Just thought I'd share them.
  7. Found this hammer head at an estate sale and bought it for the novelty of it. I have this hammer and thought I may be able to share the handle with is and treat it as a kit. They both have 3/8" fine threads but the screw driver was too long for the new ball peen head. There is only 2" hollowed out in the stem so I decided to make a handle for it. I found this piece of brass from a candle stick I saved from a previous project. As luck would have it it had 3/8" fine threads already in the end of it. Stuff does go right sometimes. Mounted it on the metal lathe and turned it down to 7/16". Found a suitable piece of Mahogany, drilled it and epoxied the two together. Turned it on the wood lathe and gave it a CA finish. Cut the head off a fine thread bolt to use as a connector to mate the hammer head and handle together. Then I got the idea to cut a tip off a Phillips screw driver, drill a hole in the 3/8" connector and mate the two together. So now the handle has a Phillips screw driver when twisted apart. I enjoy piddling around with projects like this. Gets the creative juices flowing.
  8. I seem to have a few of the squares in use...some big, some tiny... Maybe Moody can suggest a name for some of these....the HUGE one in the back IS a Stanley...10" of steel blade. The rest? The "Three Diamonds" square was from my dad's tool box. This little fellow is a Swanson 6" combo. Just to show how big some of these are. Been using a few of these in the Chest Of Drawers project.. So...any guesses about who made what? Rosewood,Brass, and Steel Co.?
  9. Got a packet of corner brackets. Needed to make a few pilot holes for the #1 screws.. All kinds of toys in the background. Screws are TINY.. And, since the electric screwdriver doesn't have a charged up battery, I had to use this old Stanley... Made a "chain" out of hook & eyes.. Hmmm, maybe a better look? Hooks have been trimmed down, and rebent a bit. Used the old pair of pliers from my days of tying rebar for a living. Top hook swings down, into the same eyelet as the next hook below it. The others just have their own eyelet to use. Have sanded to first coat back a bit, and need a new brush. The more "redder" Witch's Brew will be a top coat. Knee is sore from mowing the yard yesterday, so I think I will just sit a spell today.

Back side, showing the brass hinges. Went and added slotted head screws, instead of phillips ones.
  11. Last week I ran across this nice looking old plumb bob in a leather holder. It was at an auction and has a price tag on it of $100.00. I didn't pay the 100.00 and I love the auction! This is a "Globe 14" made in the USA by Eugene Dietzgen Company of Chicago. It has a steel tip that can be changed. It is brass and has a very nice patina. The Case is made by Keuffel & Esser Company. I like the leather case but I don't believe it is the case that originally went with this plumb bob. The case probably dates to around the 1950's or 1960's. Still a nice case and protects the plumb bob. This is considered a rare version because of the shape or so I have read.. Well It is still ready to be used, but will likely retire to the display cabinet. More Patriot Picking coming soon!
  12. From the album: Gene's Stuff
