  1. Good Monday Morning! Good Monday morning Patriot Woodworkers! What did you get done over the weekend, and what have you planned for the week ahead! Inquiring minds want to know. Please tell us what's happening in your shops, your life, and any events going on with you. Thank you for being here folks!
  2. The cause As you know we had a wonderful project that spanned from October to the end of the year of 2017 that involved the Gold Star widow and her two children as assigned to our community by Operation Ward 57. You can see the project at: The Patriot Woodworkers with Op Ward 57 Adopt a Gold Star Family for the Holidays - 2017 The donation During the project we witnessed many forms of heart felt giving, from the actual raffle ticket purchases, to the exchanging of the winnings from one member to another. Every step of the way, everyone who participated in this project performed heroically, I want to thank everyone once again for their giving, and participation in this very important annual tradition of ours. Thank you! Sometimes, things happen in these projects that are, well, just pretty danged cool, and one of those things was the shipment I received from Patriot Woodworker @honesttjohn. The shipment contained one blanket for each member of the Merlo Family. These blankets were hand made by Mrs. Mordus, (spouse of John Mordus aka honestjohn). John informed me the items were on their way, and I was expecting them, but what I was not expecting was the handwork that went into this operation. My own mother is a crocheter, I grew up with the craft, so I understand the time and heart that goes into this craft, the blankets of Mrs. Mordus were knitted. I am showing images of the work the night before we shipped the gifts from our home to the Merlo Family. I want to apologize for the image quality, it was late, the lights were dim in our home, shortly after I took these pictures our kids wrapped each blanket individually and put a name tag on the gifts before we put them in the shipping box for delivery the next day. This knitted blanket was made for Mrs. Merlo, the knitting is exquisite and detailed, can you imagine spending the time that it takes to make every single tiny square and creating those squares methodically around each heart. I had a chance to feel this blanket, it was very soft, and it had considerable heft to it as well, I was tempted to wrap myself in it but my heart said no, the first wrap should be performed by the honored recipient, Mrs. Merlo. Look at those tiny knitted stitches The hearts The following are images of the blankets Mrs. Mordus created for the children, Camilla and Charlie, the baseballs went to the boy, and the butterflies went to the girl. Mrs. Mordus crafted a border around the fleece fabric of both blankets. This is a style of making blankets that my own mother has been wanting to do for sometime now, mom was over at this time, and she closely examined the borders to see how Mrs. Mordus fabricated them. I wish I had taken close up images of the borders, I don't know why I did not. At this writing I am right now kicking myself. Camilla's flutterby blanket Charlie is a baseball fanatic! And of course, do you think @honesttjohn could let that box of blankets ship without something from the shop! John installed a completely wonderful keepsake box for Mrs. Merlo that he created. This was unexpected, a beautiful touch to an already incredible shipment for the Merlo Family. I am not sure what the box was made from, it may have been John's trademark Pine that he uses in many of his plaque projects, hopefully John will chime in here and let us know. And the grand finale, the Merlo kids with their warm blankets on Christmas morning. You can tell they are very happy. We do not have an image of Mrs. Merlo with her blanket, it was not provided, but I can surmise why we do not have that image, well you know how ladies are, early in the morning, just out of the rack, hair not straight yet, I am sure the image is out there, but Mrs. Merlo surely wasn't going to let that one get out! Without further adieu, the kids Charlie and Camilla and their cherished blankets. (these images shown here, with permission given by mom Merlo) Little Camilla showing off mama's blanket In closing Again, I want to thank everyone who was involved in this project, it was a huge success this year thanks to you all. And on behalf of our entire Patriot Woodworker community, Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Mordus for this very special gift, that will keep on giving to this family for years to come, as they curl up during cold season with these blankets. This topic is long over due, and I want to also apologize to @honesttjohn for taking so long to get this up and live, thanks for your patience John.
  3. Grand Prize We are proud to offer a Woodriver No. 63 Low Angle Jack Plane to this months "What's It" winner. This months "What's It" is sponsored by our supporter Woodcraft Supply. Originally advertised as a plane for heavy stock removal across the grain, the No. 62 has found a home as a smoother and is quite popular among collectors. The WoodRiver® No. 62 is faithful to the original design, but is almost a full pound heavier at approximately 4.6 lbs. It features a body cast from ductile iron, with a bed angle of 12°, a bubinga tote and front knob, and a high-carbon steel blade with a 25° bevel. The plane measures a little less than 14" in length x 2-7/16" in width and has a 2"-wide blade. 4. Good Monday Morning! Good Monday Patriot Woodworkers! What did you get done over the weekend, and what have you planned for the week ahead! Inquiring minds want to know. Please tell us what's happening in your shops, your life, and any events going on with you. Thank you for being here folks! Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas to all Patriot Woodworkers and guests alike. So, here we are, a day after Christmas and I completely forgot to get our Monday topic live, as I do weekly. I also did not get our Monday topic up the last two weeks as I have been very ill, I have finally dug out of the flu fog the last few days and I actually felt great for Christmas. I'd like to say thank you to all for being here, and sharing your lives and shops with us, we are forever grateful for the folks who keep our forums live and interesting. And we hope you all have a very Merry Christmas! Under the Christmas Tree So Patriot Woodworkers, what did you all get under the tree this Christmas, I'll go ahead and kick it off! My family purchased this wonderful restored fully usable set and sharpened Warranted Superior saw for me, this is a beaut! I love it. They also presented me with this wonderful old book all about North American woods and trees, and their use in the trades and crafts woodworking industry. I love these old books, I use them as a resource for our Patriot Woodwiki that we have been building, and the family knows I love to read these books. I can't get enough of them. This books was copyright is 1951 and it is still viable today, why wouldn't it be, trees have not changed in the last 60 years have they? The book is called American Woods, and was written by Shelley E. Schoonover (Regional Fiscal Agent (retired) United States Forest Service). So that was my haul of the day, what did Santa bring you all! 5. Just in time for me being laid up for a few days, I received the December issue of the Gristmill by MWTCA. Many of you who have won our MWTCA drawings for membership are already aware of this wonderful publication, this month features Leonard Bailey, this magazine is full of great stuff and hand tool historical articles, and their main feature has a nice breakdown of the history of the hand plane and of course the Stanley brand references. For the studious woodworkers who love hand tool and implement history, these magazines are wonderful. To join MWTCA see their website at https://mwtca.org/ Or you can participate in our monthly projects at http://thepatriotwoodworker.com/forum/54-the-mwtca-whats-it-project/ By the way, I should be able to get our December What's It up and live today, sorry for the delay. Here is the cover of the December "The Gristmill" magazine.

  8. A busy week this past week and I don't see a let up until Christmas. I'm thankful for the work and it keeps me busy in the shop. Before retirement this would have been a nice long weekend, but now they are all long weekends. As much as it is nice to get the time in the shop this weekend, let's not forget the purpose of this holiday. A time to remember all our veterans and the price they paid and pay for our freedom. To those of you that have served, thanks you for your service. This week I finished a batch of breadboards. I've got to get busy, I just need 116 more right now. I also finally finished the Oak Cabinet door, got the glass installed, hinges and install on the cabinets at the customers. European hinges for a face frame with 3/4" overlay. She purchased the cabinets at a yard sale and wanted to have doors made so her son's trophies and memorabilia could have a home and not have to be dusted so often. Originally I was going to only make the doors but later she decided she wanted me to stain and finish them. So not they are all done and installed on the cabinets The cabinets will be attached to the wall as soon as they are in place. If you open all four doors at once it will tip forward. I am also trying to finish this weekend the Walnut Island top. The top will be 37 1/2" wide and 87" long and 1 1/2" thick. I am putting it together in four pieces. The last two are in clamps right now. When I get those out in the morning, I will join two of them together and then later I will join the two pieces to make one really large and heavy walnut island top. So that is what's going on in my shop and on my agenda this weekend, what's on your agenda? You know we love to see and hear about all of your projects and woodworking. Share with us your Veterans Weekend Plans. Remember what ever you do this weekend, make sure to work safe.

Please tell us what's happening in your shops, your life, and any events going on with you. Thank you for being here folks! Personal update: I think I quite woodworking, seems I cannot get back in the shop these days, this is the longest dry spell I have ever had (no woodworking since August). Between home repairs for our VA refinance (done) and medical emergencies, and visiting loved ones in the hospital, and just a whole host of things that I cannot publicly display, I cannot get back to it! Alas, I do have faith! I was able to actually walk out to my shop and organize a tad. It's amazing when a garage/shop is not being used, how much crap builds up on top of woodworking surfaces! Thanks for reading my display of self pity. New members Please welcome the following members to our community. No new members to report on this past week. 13. Okay I know it’s Saturday morning but my Friday got away from me and I didn’t get my post up. I had been pushing all week to finish inventory for a craft show last night. Friday I was putting the finishing touches on cutting boards and getting everything loaded into the trailer. Today I’m grilling burgers during lunch time at the shooting range for Burgers and Bullets. When I finish there it is home to the shop and work on a Walnut Island top. Sunday afternoon after church I’m shooting in an USPSA event and if there’s anytime left in the day it will be back to the shop and work on the island top. A full weekend for sure, but should be a lot of fun. How about you, What’s on your woodworking agenda this weekend? Love to see all the projects and pictures so share your weekend agenda with us. Whatever you do have fun and make sure to work safe!

  15. October is rapidly coming to an end. This week I’ve been working on completing stock for two upcoming shows. No pictures for you since I’ve already posted them in other post. Cutting boards and bread boards are the biggest thing in the queue right now. Starting tonight my granddaughter that lives with us is celebrating her 12 th Birthday. Any moment now I’m expecting five young girls to join her. I had five of the benches we made for the boys a few weeks back so the girls coming over are building their own bench. We have their initials for the to paint and put on the end of the bench. I will post some pictures of those when they finish them. So right now I’m resting up so I can make the night with them and spend a little time in the shop with them. Everything is cut out so all they will do is put in right pocket screws. So how about you all, what’s on your agenda this weekend before Halloween? Share your projects and plans with us. What ever you do this weekend, be safe!

Cutting is done by a small rotating cutter in a tilted head. As the work revolves slowly in the lathe, a leadscrew (as for a screwcutting lathe) or in this case a rack arrangement traverses the workpiece axially, beneath the fixed cutter. 17. Volleyball season is now over and I'm getting back on schedule. Last Friday and Saturday brought it to an end as we lost two games in the tournament. By the way, sorry we got all tied up last Friday and I didn't manage to get up a Friday post. I hope it didn't mess up your weekend not having this up. So I finished the Poplar Green Egg smoker table last Saturday and got it picked up and out of the shop. This is for one of the smaller models which is really almost a table top version but they wanted it to sit down in the table so it wouldn't get knocked off and broken. So I did a half shelf and left more open area on the other side. This was one of those I didn't have to finish either as they wanted to put the finish on and i was glad to let them. This week I have cut out some bread boards and almost got this batch finished. Just need to route out the place for the bowl to sit that holds the dipping sauce. I should get those complete Saturday. I also got a batch of cutting boards cut out and cross cut today so I could glue them in the end grain side. I am running a batch of five and will cut out another batch the first of the week. I don't think I posted this but I may have and if so forgive me lost of memory. I posted the picture of the shaper a friend gave me that had surface rust on the top. I was able to get that cleaned off and it is looking pretty good. Now I'll clean the spindle and he is going to come over and give me some tips in running a few pieces. It is setup right now to run raised panel door panels. So that is what is going on around here, what is on your weekend agenda? Love to see and read about all of the projects you are working on so share your weekend plans with us. What ever you are doing this weekend, be safe.

Featured image of the week Source: http://thepatriotwoodwiki.org/Adze The traditional way to use an adze is to straddle the timber or log while holding the adze by its long handle and swing the adze up out in front and center to the users body, then swing the adze down to strike the timber or log. There are many ways to use a long handled adze and various stances or positions for the user to take as the work dictates. The foot adze is most commonly known as a shipbuilder’s or carpenter’s adze. They range in size from 00 to 5 being 3 1/4 to 4 3/4 pounds with the cutting edge 3 inches to 4 1/2 inches wide. On the modern steel adze the cutting edge may be flat for smoothing work to very rounded for hollowing work such as bowls, gutters and canoes. The shoulders or sides of an adze may be curved called a lipped adze, used for notching. The end away from the cutting edge is called the pole and can be of different shapes, generally flat or a pin pole.
  19. Typically our Monday morning topic is filled with questions on what we all did over the weekend, what we have planned for the week ahead, and we will welcome our new members and share stories. But I woke up to come on here before I head off to work for the day, and upon turning on the morning news, I learned about the mass shooting in Las Vegas. So I am here writing now, and I cannot find the heart nor the words to start off our typical Monday Morning topic with words of cheer and happiness. But, that does not mean you cannot participate in this topic, to let us know what you did over the weekend, and what you have planned for the week ahead. Actually, I hope you do, perhaps I can turn to our membership for some cheer and uplifting remarks in this time of darkness for our nation. I am saddened, and hurt. The sounds of the gunfire coming from the building above the concert crowd, will forever be in my mind, knowing that the bullets were striking innocents below. So I'll turn this topic over to you my friends, and I'll head off to work in a few minutes, just like any "normal day", meanwhile the lives of many have been changed forever in our nation, as a result of the largest mass shooting in our nations history. May God shine His grace on all those affected by this tragic event and may He take those who's lives have ended, into His arms.

  22. Ive been a bit under the weather this week so today is my first day working in the shop. Yep, I am now officially way, way behind. But I'll get things done as I can and not spend a lot of time worrying about it. Today I am working on a Pistol Shadow box that I've got to ship to Michigan this week so it is there for a presentation on Wednesday night. I know, I am under the "gun". I'll get it sprayed tomorrow and then install the glass and get it boxed up and ready to go. Almost there! This box is going to house an antique pistol that will be presented on Wednesday night. I'm also working on a pair of grips for a SIG SAUER P380 made of Purple Heart. They are cut out and drilled, just got to do a little shaping and then using the laser engraver put SIG SAUER on one side and the customers Initials on the other side in the same font and the same slop as the SIG logo. I will probably be working on those Sunday afternoon. No deadline on them so I can take my time. I also got a new Glock 19, Gen 5 the other day after the reveal at our range. I really like it and shoots very well. This was my first 50 rounds put through the gun at 10 yards. Probably going to catch a little College football Saturday, RTR! So that is what I'm working on right now, what about you, what's on your Patriot Woodworker agenda this weekend? We love to see and hear about all the projects you are working on. Post those pictures and share your projects with us. Have a fun and safe weekend whatever you are doing.
  23. Here we are another Friday and another hurricane bearing down on part of the country. Let' be praying for those in the path and hope they are get to safety. We we had a nice mini vacation to the smoky mountains last weekend. First time in the mountains for my 11 year old granddaughter. We saw a bear in Cades Cove and she was so excited she forgot to push the button on the camera to take a picture. Instead of buck dealer it was bear fever. Well this week I got a batch of cutting boards ready for the final sander and mineral oil soaking. I'll be bringing a load of Poplar from the wood stash tomorrow for a table I'm working on. I have a few other projects in the queue but not sure how far I will get. I've got spend some time with John Deere at some point this weekend. So how about you all, what's on your agenda this weekend?

The tree is located in the White Mountains of Inyo County, Eastern California, but its exact physical location is kept confidential to protect it from people. In 1964, a researcher with the consent of U.S. Forest Service, chopped down a tree which was around 4900 years old (named Prometheus). At present, we can still visit the grove of the ancient bristlecone pine tree forest but can we identify which tree is Methuselah? Source: http://www.wondersify.com/oldest-trees-world/
