  1. Last day for relatives. Spent the day driving around the Gettysburg Battlefield. No matter how many times you go there, it is always sobering. He re
  2. This is a pretty neat site for newbies and, us not so new guys. Paul Sellers is an excellent teacher. Common woodworking Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
  3. This might already be somewhere on the web site and I haven't found it yet. I was thinking of a forum or list where members could post their recommendations on books, DVDs, videos, etc. relating to a specific topic. We see these recommendations imbedded in various threads, but they are hard to find when we later might want to check them out. Maybe an initial period of input from members suggesting various categories to help in posting. These wouldn't even have to be "clickable", just tags to help in the search bar. @John Morris, whatcha think?
  4. Kids got out of school for the summer, today. No subbing until August! Lots of activity by our Patriot turners this week! @PostalTom made a set of pen jaws from an article by Mr. David Reed Smith. Tom reports that the jaws worked like a charm. Check out the sweet looking pen he made using the jaws- @Charles Nicholls has been turning some gorgeous bottle stoppers. Charles answers comments about this project in his post- @Steve Krumanaker is adding details to a b
  5. Got home late yesterday and we spent the evening unpacking, doing laundry and putting stuff away. Today was cleaning the shop and finishing up the rifle rack I made for a friend. My poor old lathe sure is feeling lonely! @Gerald told us he sold one of his turned bowls! Gerald explains a little more in his post- Mike Peace posted a video about Woodturning Forums. He speaks about the characteristics and what you can expect. As with anything on the Internet, we need to keep an open mind about the advice we glean from the many source
  6. Our Patriot turners were really active this past week with more projects, questions and ideas! @Ron Altier's wife got him a really nice turner's smock. I'm pretty sure the other turners were jealous considering the ribbing he took. I think it will provide great protection from flying chips (or sparks)! Some of the good natured comments are at- Ron also posted a neat little "chip deflector" that he made. The simple design lends itself to virtually any tool manufacturer. Ron explains how he made this in his p
  7. While @Cliff and I are sharing the beach in the sunny Antilles, I thought I'd get a head start on today's post. @Cliff has his vacuum chuck rig set up and running. There are lots of questions and comments about how he made this. Cliff shares his procedures in his post- @Steve Krumanaker posted images of his second "cryptex". Steve's pictures show some of the internal workings of this clever little device! @PostalTom asked a question about the usefulness of a lathe that can be operated in the rever
  8. Turning is therapeutic. Before getting into this week's offerings, please remember to add tags to your posted topics. Tags help forum viewers with searches and can add an additional layer of organization to the overall site. Tags can include, but not be limited to, project category, material, style, finish, tools, manufacturer, etc., etc. We've had lots of activity this week in Turning Forum. Some questions, some projects and some great suggestions. @Steve Krumanaker has gone wild with Christmas ornaments! Check out all of the ornamen
  9. It finally got above freezing the past couple of days but the basement shop is lagging behind in the warm up. @Ksvet06 posed a question about sharpening lathe tools. He asked about grinders and sharpening jigs. Please look over his post and the responses. 10. 2018! Seem like just a couple of months ago I was starting up computers hoping they would function after the Y2K Bug scare! @PostalTom showed us a sweet bowl he made for his daughter. It is made from poplar! Check out his description here- @Steve Krumanaker turned an awesome natural edge walnut bowl but it was not without its' problems- Here's Steve's explanation of what happened- @Ksvet06 asked a question about searching the turning forum for specific information. Gang, this just reinforces the
  11. Well I made it through the Christmas holiday- mostly by hiding out in the basement shop! Member @Cliff posed a question about salvaging a warped bowl blank. Check out some of the suggestions and see if you can give Cliff some help- @Steve Krumanaker posted a beautiful natural edge walnut bowl. Keeping that much bark intact is quite a feat!! Check out his post and the comments here- @HandyDan set me a link to a really cool video about making multiple copies of little wooden horses- on the lathe! Although the aud

  13. Christmas without a father is not something most folks can begin to imagine. No Dad for a kid is tough enough but at Christmas it is heartbreaking. I know. We cannot allow these kids to have anything less than a super Christmas. With a little over 3 weeks to go, we still need $500 to meet our goal. Please head over to our raffle and give what your heart says. http://thepatriotwoodworker.com/topic/21082-the-patriot-woodworkers-with-op-ward-57-adopt-a-gold-star-family-for-the-holidays-2017/ On another matter, our administrative staff would really apprec
  14. Another week in the books. Been busy making requested Christmas gifts but unfortunately it has been all flatwork. However, our band of turners here at the Patriot have been busy. @Steve Krumanaker showed us a little box he made, last week. Well, he finished a bunch more and they are beauties! @HandyDan Finished up a "few" pens and pencils. You may remember that Dan uses the "guts" from premade pens/pencils instead of buying expensive kits. @Jim from Easy Wood Tools posted a really awesome bowl turned by Will Atw
  15. Christmas is less than 2 months away. We have the opportunity to make this Christmas special for our Gold Star Christmas Family. Please head over to this page and give what your heart suggests. Sure, you might win a fantastic prize from our most generous sponsors. But, really, the winners will be those kids on Christmas morning when they see there really is a Santa.
