  1. I'm from Ohio and I wondered why I have never heard of any one using Buckeye wood in any project. George Washington loved the tree because of the flowers. Of course there are the Ohio State Buckeyes. After a bit of research I quickly found out that the way Michigan Wolverines describes a buckeye is true. "a poisonous nut on a worthless tree"
  2. I was contacted by a Navy buddy about his wooden hand plane. He was interested in what it might be worth. I know it is difficult to say without a detailed description and hands on. Here is what I know- About 28" long Blade is stamped with Thomas Firth and sons The body has a stamp of W. Hoger- he said this is very hard to read He sent me these 2 pix- Any information and help will be greatly appreciated. Lew
  3. A friend has a used, but not too old Craftsman Commercial table saw he wants to get rid of. Questions: 1) Is this a decent saw and not one of these with pot-metal bearings and such? 2) if so, what would be a fair price for it. Looks kind of like this:
  4. I bought a dovetail jig a few years ago, called a "Universal Joiner" It looked really easy and powerful in the demo. When I tried to use it, I got a headache. I even went to an all-day class in it. So now, I have a 100 page manual full of charts and options, class notes, and a cheat-sheet I made during the three days I spent trying to figure it out. It's one of those things that has so many options, I think it takes a PhD in mechanical engineering to be able to use it. There are so many degrees of freedom, each one gives you a chance to mess up. I've had about enough of it. I regret ever buying it. So I'm thinking of another option. I'd like something that can do both half-blind and through dovetails. I'd do mostly drawers and boxes with it. From what I've started to read, people like the Porter-Cable 4212 (or 4216) as an economical option or the Leigh as a more flexible, but more complex option. The negatives to the PC is that it fixed increment, meaning you have to design your drawers, and thus your cabinet around the increments that the tool can do. And it takes a proprietary bit? There are others, Keller, and MLCS and Rockler, among others, but I don't hear much about them.. So is the Leigh worth nearly twice as much money?
  5. A local CL ad has a Zyliss aluminum vice made in Switzerland complete and in excellent condition for $110.00. I have no idea what it would normally sell for. It looks like it would be useful for my gunsmithing hobby. Any opinions much appreciated.
