  1. Got the yard mowed just in time! Quick 1/4" of rain. Been hot and humid here for the past week. Our Patriot Turners- @forty_caliber has added a vacuum chuck to his turning arsenal. He received lots of comments about using it from our members- Included in this thread is one of the bowls he made, using the chuck. Check out the way he filled the void in the bowl- Forty also post in the Patriots regular "What's On Your Weekend Agenda" forum about his new coring system for getting the most from a bowl blank- You can read his update and see more images at- @Fred W. Hargis Jr continued work on the pepper grinder he started last week. Fred posted images of the finished prototype and then showed us the final product. It turned out so nice, Fred says he may just make more! @HandyDan turned a beautiful cherry bowl for his sister. I was really taken by the shape. In his post, Dan tells us how he made the blank and did the finish. What’s Coming Up- Cindy Drozda is having Mushroom Box Demo Click on the image for the link to registration and more information. Don't forget, this weekend is the S.W.A.T. Convention in Waco, TX. For The Newbies- A couple of videos for making turning accessories. From Mike Peace, on making and using mandrels- And Sam Angelo on making and using threaded drive blocks- Expand Your Horizons- Here's a really neat project called a "change box", from Carl Jacobson Last week we mentioned videos from Jim Rodgers on making open segment turnings. Here is #3 in the video series- New Turning Items- I expect there will be new turning items being shown at S.W.A.T. We will see what we can spend out lunch money on, soon! Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Finished up the #3 of 4 box elder bowls. I have to thank @HandyDan for the idea on the rim. I liked the bowl he made for his sister. #4 just came out of the drying box, maybe get that one finished this week. Used the Yorkshire Grit and the Hampshire Sheen as the finish on this one, too. Still have to remove some excess lodged in the worm holes. Safe turning and stay well
  2. I was talking to a friend at out last meeting about vacuum chucks. He has the same one as me but his holds better. He told me he took the two O-rings off and put a new end on it. He bought it at www.rubberchucky.com. I went there and bought one for mine and was amazed at all of the products they have. They have the drive and end for three sided bowls, sphere cups, drive and center for pepper mills and many other things. If anybody is looking for anything different check them out. I am not affiliated with them in any way. I was just impressed with the selection of products they have.
  3. We had an awesome snow here. Right around 14" of the light powdery stuff. New snow blower worked flawlessly! Our Patriot Turners- @Steve Krumanaker has expanded his Lid Making business to include pieces for spice bottles. Steve shows us some of the work it takes to create these new items- Check out his post for more details- @Pauley turned a couple of spectacular bowls. The wood color and grain patterns take your breathe away! Please see his post for the images and the types of wood he used- @RustyFN was also working on a beautifully colored bowl. Rusty received lots of comments about his choice of wood and the bowl- @AndrewB is really having fun with his new pressure pot and casting resins. He continued to update us on last week's post with more images of some of his castings You can can see the updates at- Andrew used one of the castings to begin turning an egg- In Andrew's post, @Gerald gave us a link to some of his favorite color additives for resin. Here's the link to the discussion- Andrew didn't just turn acrylic resin this week. I suspect there will be some pine tar resin on his lathe after working with some wood his local tree guys gave him. See more images and his progress in this post- I hope you all are aware The Patriot Woodworker has added another sponsor- General Finishes! While we may be tempted to think of their finishes being used for woodworking, they have a woodturning finish, too! Here's a short video from General Finishes demonstrating that finish- What’s Coming Up- Although there is light at the end of the tunnel, some of "The Woodworking Shows" will still be virtual. You can get more information about the schedule and demonstrators at- https://www.thewoodworkingshows.com/?fbclid=IwAR39zWURThvLgnzTRqV9OAdVKFxNtR9qON_8bR36HupZ-GVNMR11oAjnQcU Highland Woodworking is offering an online course for photographing your work. Although it is directed toward photographing furniture, there certainly could be some worthwhile content for the turner- Click on the above image for the link to registration and more information. For The Newbies- Over the past month or so we have had a reoccurring topic about gouges and the discussion often centers around the choice between HSS and carbide. In this video, the author provides pros and cons of both types of tools. (Editor's note: The thing I have found in these comparison videos/articles is that the author(s) are often turners who have used HSS tools from the time they started turning. Many of them have decades of experience using the "traditional" tools. Then with a few hours of carbide turning, they render their often not so positive verdict. Perhaps the opinions would be different if they had the same tool time with both types of tools.) Expand Your Horizons- Maybe I should call this compress your horizons. One of the first questions, when considering casting resins, is how to get rid of the bubbles that form in the pour. Should I use a vacuum or use pressure? This video attempts to answer that question. Having had some experience with casting objects (cold cast porcelain) we found that a combination of both was the best way to go. We would vacuum each part of the components- before mixing. Carefully mix. Apply pressure. Looking for that perfect toy for the grandkids, or great grandkids? Tim Yoder has you covered- New Turning Items- Ruth Niles has a couple of new items on her website- This 3/8" three fluted spiral tap is especially suited for acrylics and very hard wood- https://nilesbottlestoppers.com/product/spiral-3-8-tap/ She also has new mandrel adapters- https://nilesbottlestoppers.com/product/mandrel-adapters/ Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube turning videos from last week. If you missed the Virtual Craft Festival this past weekend, several of the presenters' videos are included in Rick's list. Safe turning and stay well
  4. One of these days, I'm gonna surprise you all and actually do some turning. But in the meantime let's not forget our pledge to make our "adopted" family's Christmas the best ever- Our Patriot Turners- @Steve Krumanaker added more birdhouse ornaments to the bunch he already completed. I think he must be staying up nights! Steve shows us some of the fantastic details on these, in his post- @HandyDan cranked out a slew of awesome looking Awls. As always, Dan provides detailed descriptions of his process. He also gives us a look at one of the "New Turning Items" we mentioned sometime back. @kmealy was inspired to turn some Christmas trees after seeing what the asking price was at a Craft store. Judging from what he saw, there's money to be made with lathe turnings! Check out Keith's post! @RustyFN is having fun turning lidded vessels. These can be turned from just about any wood- even glued up scraps- Please see his post and read all of the nice comments from our turners. Sometime back, we were discussing casting acrylic blanks. The conversation included inquiries about pressure pots. Rusty was kind enough to share his pressure pot build information along with some pictures. Head on over to his post and see what he used and how he made the conversion. What’s Coming Up- Here's something to look forward to! Click on the above image for the link to more information. If you don't want to wait that long, this might be something to keep your spirits up- This is a live YouTube event. Click on the above image for a link to the presenters. Each person does a live demo on their own YouTube channel. For The Newbies- A nice video on turning a natural edge bowl. This bowl is turned from some American Chestnut. Not much of that left any more. Nice way to preserve a once very common species. Expand Your Horizons- This is a very interesting way to embellish a turning- the art of Shou Sugi Ban. Although the process is typically used on cedar, the author of this video uses a pine blank- To learn more about this process use this link- https://shousugiban.com/ New Turning Items- To make up for those weeks I couldn't find anything on which to spend your money, open up your wallets! Thinking about getting a vacuum chuck? Here's a site that may have exactly what you need! Here is the link to their site- https://www.frugalvacuumchuck.com/home.html Our friends from Woodturners Wonders have a new CBN wheel for your Tormek sharpening station. You can check it out here- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/new-products/products/tornado-waterless-10-cbn-wheel-tormek-style-with-radius-edge-12mm-arbor They also have a pretty substantial savings on their complete lathe track system- The pieces are also available individually. Here's the link- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/lathe-track/products/full-lathe-track-system Everything Else- Last week's list of YouTube videos from Rick Turns- Safe turning and stay well
  5. Finally a day without rain! Too bad I had to spend it indoors. Our Patriot Turners- @HandyDan created the most awesome miniature cremation urn for a friend. Dan certainly has a talent for making the most personalized gifts. Check out Dan's post to see why he made this particular item- @Steve Krumanaker made a couple of walking sticks, that we featured a couple Wednesdays ago. Steve produced 3 videos of the turning/construction processes. We posted the videos in the Turner's Forum but in case you missed them, here's a link- @Gerald was kind enough to give us all a heads up on an AAW resource. A lot of the Association of American Woodturners resources require a subscription/membership. This particular one is free to everyone with very few limitations. In last weeks, "Wednesday's..." @Gerald posted pictures of a "turning" tool he is repairing. If you turn a lot of projects from logs. This gem comes in really handy! What’s Coming Up- Click on the above image for the link to more information. For The Newbies- Turned pens are always a nice gift and they are not difficult to make, although they do require a few extra "accessories". Here's a 2 part video from Tim Yoder making a not-so-ordinary pen from a laser cut kit. The second part is linked from Tim's YouTube channel. Expand Your Horizons- Mike Peace shows us how to create a natural edge winged bowl. It sure came out beautifully. Watch you knuckles!!! New Turning Items- Our very generous sponsor, Easy Wood Tools ( @Jim from Easy Wood Tools ), has a new product! The EWT Wire Burning Kit!!! Here's a video from Carl Jacobson demonstrating it! So Cool!!! Everything Else- Rick Turns put up his list of April YouTube turning videos- Safe turning
  6. I have to buy a new vacuum for my workshop. I use it for general cleanup and attachment to my router table and for handheld plunge routing. My 12 year old Ridgid croaked last night.....my fault. Since I haven't bought one in all these years I don't know which manufacturers have excelled. I was considering Shop-Vac (made in USA) but Ridgid, Craftsman reviews seem to be good. I would like to max out at $100 - $150. Thank You for your suggestions.
  7. Sorry as I seemed to redirect from the original posting. This chair is actual an old children's rocking chair dated 1912 that was given to my Mother-in-Law as a yound child. My wife now has this chair and from the first time I remember seeing it the seat has been cracked. Further investigation shows the crack in probably the worst location as it goes through where the back post is attached. So from the attached pictures you can see the extent of the crack and it seems I would need to remove at least two of the screws on the bottom plate holding the bottom together, glue the crack and then clamp and screw it back down? Or is it maybe better to use a filler and try to match the finish? Maybe both? Add some filler with the glue? I've never attempted to repair this old a piece of furniture and being a family piece I'd really rather not mess it up. Just saying, the wife wouldn't say anything but I'd be highly disappointed in myself if I caused more harm than good. Her parents were very much family to me as well and they are both gone now.
  8. Use your wet or dry vacuum outside on the end of the drain line to suck out the lent and trash . I do this about once a year. A window unit don't count, only the central unit needs this help... Just let the window unit fall out the window and it will be clear after you set it back in..Second thought, I keep my shop unit tilting down outside to take care of the extra water build up so no worry there...The big unit inside does make a mess if not cleared regularly...
  9. some gozillion years ago I was given a twin state Sgt Welsh rotary vein vacuum pump that fell of a truck. No really it fell off the truck & got damaged ( just the belt shroud) but there was an insurance claim and this one was unclaimed so the shipper gave it to me. And a decade or so later I'm finally trying to put it to use. I got a small air tank and welded bungs to it so I can run 1" piping to it. It is the vacuum reservoir in case of power failure. Then mounted it and the pump together around a corner on the other side of a wall and ran 1" copper to the lathe with a parker needle valve and a vacuum gauge and LOOKY MA I can hold a great vacuum and even lower the hold to what ever HG I want with the needle valve . AND When I shut it off it holds the vacuum for a good long time. The reason for the large piping is over a long run ya gotta have a big pipe a small one just doesn't work well
  10. In rebuilding my shop after move, I intended to build a Thien baffle for my Rigid shopvac. Part of it is the function (preserve the good VF6000 filter I put in the vac, and also slightly easier to empty/swap buckets that empty the vac)... but part of it is the intangible joy of the build and pushing the limits of it's effectiveness. Then I stumbled into this cyclone for $16. I don't know how effective it is, and I'm never thrilled about ordering from China... but at that price it's very hard to justify building my own Thien baffle until all my other shop wannabuilds are done. Has anyone tried this, or other clone cyclones? All opinions welcome.
  11. Just perusing the net this morning before work, and I stumbled across this vacuum hose reel. Of course we could make our own, but to see the pro model demoed is fun. Here is their website: Fast Cap Super Reel I have no horse in the game, just showing and telling.
  12. Lew I saw in your "turned round" picture, your set up for your vacuum when turning. Does that work well? Do you use all the time or just for sanding? I've been thinking about a vacuum set up, but haven't come up with much yet.
