  1. October is almost in the books! Our Patriot Turners- @Gerald was busy turning out some really neat projects- He posted these in "Friday's Weekend" thread. See his post for some other colorful items- He even managed to score some beautiful cherry over the weekend- There are more pictures at- And he managed to get at least one piece underway- Our resident Christmas ornament professional, @Ron Altier, posted some beautiful maple items. I think he used his patented epoxy finish on them. Check out his post for more about where he got the wood- What’s Coming Up- Click on the images for links to more information and registration- For The Newbies- New turners typically have difficulty getting proficient with the skew. I still haven't mastered it! Watch Richard Raffan make it look easy- Mike Peace demonstrated how to do some tool "makeovers" Woodturning Monthly was published by the Woodworker's Journal. Some nice projects and articles- https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/woodturning-monthly/?utm_medium=email Expand Your Horizons- Alan Stratton is always coming up with unusual turning ideas and this one is no exception- Wish you had a Genie? Well Carl Jacobson has turned a Genie Bottle in case you ever find one New Turning Items- Niles Bottle Stoppers has added a couple of new items- https://nilesbottlestoppers.com/product/artisan-coffee-scoop-kit/ https://nilesbottlestoppers.com/product/artisan-rasp-grater-kit/ Woodturners Wonders is having a sale on their lathe "Track System". Check their website at- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/lathe-track?_kx=gV5SF2As_3IwtBi5TrpHVQM0F3UvGVbQKzhWGippDlk%3D.VJvU8R Everything Else- From Ron Brown's newsletter- Side Gig – Sage Advice I had a long visit with a friend who will be retiring in 5-6 years and is thinking about starting a woodworking business to keep busy and generate some extra income. I have been hearing from more folks than usual about generating a little cash from a side hustle in view of the current economic situation with a dollar buying less every day. I’ve made extra income from my side hustle for the last 55 years. Even when I was in the corporate world, I still made and sold wooden items on the side. Sometimes for pocket change, sometimes as a second income when the first one wasn’t enough. I’ve picked up a few things along the way that you might be interested in or passing along to a friend. 1) Demand – don’t just make and try to sell what you love, make and sell what they want to buy (even if you don’t particularly like it). I tell my family that I would sell dried cow patties if that was what the demand called for. a. In general woodworking the good sellers might be cutting boards, stove top covers, 2x4 basic bunk beds, etc. b. For woodturners it could be pens, tops, pepper mills, salad bowls, etc. I’ve learned from experience that just because I’m wild about something, doesn’t mean it will sell. 2) If an item is in high demand and everyone else is doing it, don’t be afraid to make them also. a. A prime example of this is metal tumblers like the Yeti. In the laser engraving world, there are thousands of people making laser engraved tumblers, wrapped tumblers, or personalized tumblers. I know, my kids have given me several every Christmas for the past bunch of years. My church even gave me a pair. b. Hamburgers are another great example. If people were afraid of making something someone else made, there would only be one place to get a hamburger instead of a hamburger joint on every corner. 3) Don’t be the cheapest guy on the block. Find out what the market price is and be somewhere around there. You might have to be creative to make a profit. 4) If no one is doing it, there is probably a good reason. No demand, impossible to make a decent profit due to the material cost or excessive labor. Before you bring something totally new to the market, get half a dozen regular items well established and selling consistently before you attempt to blaze a totally new trail. 5) You might be a perfectionist, but your customers won’t pay for perfection. They will pay for great or even good, but perfect is in the eye of the beholder. You can be perfect if you don’t mind making $2/hr. But that is not how you make a profit in the real world. 6) Listen to your wife. She loves you and wants you to succeed. She will tell you things your friends won’t. There are many more tidbits of advice, based on years of experience, but these are some of the important ones. Safe turning
  2. Pennsylvania Farm Show week. It's the largest indoor agricultural event in the United States: sixteen acres of displays and exhibits all under one roof. The Pennsylvania Farm Show is a week-long celebration of the state's leading industry - agriculture. Big doings around these parts. Our Patriot Turners- @Masonsailor posted another of his beautiful kitchen turnings. This ice cream scoop is absolutely lovely- Paul tells us more about the turning and has added a few more images in his post- @jthornton added some more content to his post on the segmented cutting jig- After making sure it was accurate, he started working on the segments for his "popcorn bowls" @HandyDanhad some read oak and turned it in to a beautiful little bowl- Dan thinks this species may not be the best for holding liquids- Dan had earlier turned some tiny little bowls after watching one of the videos we posted last week- Check out this link to what Dan posted- What’s Coming Up- Bunch of stuff coming up. Click on the images for links to more information and registration- For The Newbies- Richard Raffan proves you don't need a log to turn nice bowls. Expand Your Horizons- How'd he do that?? Check out this video!! New Turning Items- This has jig has been around for a while but the video from Niles Stoppers is relatively recent Everything Else- Looks like Rick Turns took the week off. I greatly appreciate you all posting your work, it make putting this together a lot easier- especially as I have double duty here while Mimi recuperates. Safe turning
  3. June 1 and it's 95° in the shade on the back deck! Our Patriot Turners- @RustyFN let us in on a new finish he is trying- Several members expressed interest in more information. @Gerald added a post in the "Finishing Forum" that expanded on some of the ideas from what Rusty posted- What’s Coming Up- Pretty much caught up on all that is happening. This is the first time since Covid started that the AAW is having an in person symposium. https://www.woodturner.org/Woodturner/2022Chattanooga/2022-AAW-Symposium---Chattanooga--Tennessee.aspx?_zs=ceDib&_zl=uos73 For The Newbies- @Gerald added an interesting comment to last week's "Wednesday's..." concerning the types of screws used for fastening faceplates and faceplate rings to a turning. My favorite mounting procedure is similar but using the transparent device. Also, for marking the holes, I found that a #3 Vix-Bit drill center fits perfectly in the mounting holes of all of the Easy Wood Tools faceplates and rings. Mostly I use a oval head screw, as they have a little more "meat" around the drive slots. For smaller turnings, I may use a flathead screw Mike Peace has a nice video on bowl gouge sharpening- I've seen some nice instructional videos from Jim Echter. Unfortunately, these short videos aren't on YouTube. If you have a Facebook or Instagram account, you can watch them there. Here's the Instagram link- https://www.instagram.com/jim_echter/channel/?hl=en and a link to his website- https://tcturning.com/ Expand Your Horizons- Tim Yoder posted a video on making a turned bird feeder. In the video, he demonstrates his ELBO 2 hollowing ring. One more from Alan Stratton on goblets. Several interesting jigs for us "jig junkies"- New Turning Items- Couldn't find anything interesting this week. Hopefully, there will be some new products shown at the AAW Symposium in a couple of weeks! Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- I've been using up some scrap white oak cutoffs to make some simple platters. All of my large shop make holders were designed around my old 14" Delta lathe. The new Jet is 16" and now I need some way to hold the pieces for reverse chucking. I could go the vacuum chuck route, but I'm "frugal to a fault". I love my Easy Wood Tools Cole jaws. Seemed a fairly simple task to make a set of extensions. Not quite perfect, but they work! The holders are from the smaller jigs I had. If I weren't so stubborn, this platter should have gone into the trash. The defect wasn't nearly as noticeable until most of the material was removed. as I tried to get into more solid wood, the bottom got really thin and weak- especially where the oak was soft. Added CA and some Alumilite resin to reinforce the weak area but was not enough. I have an idea on rescuing it but need to allow the finish to dry and harden before attempting it. Safe turning
  4. Look on the bright side- only 8 more weeks until spring! Our Patriot Turners- @Masonsailor took a break from his media room ceiling to turn a sweet carver's mallet- In his post, Paul tells us the species and a little more about this turning- @RustyFN created a beautifully shaped bowl from spalted maple- Rusty said it still needed sanding. It sure is pretty even without it! What’s Coming Up- Don't forget the Worldwide Woodturners On-Line Symposium is coming up next week! https://www.woodturnersworldwide.com/ I received an email today from Craft Supplies USA that they are offering a $10. off coupon for the event- Picked this off of my Instagram account from Stuart Batty- In response to popular request, here’s my schedule for the first half of 2022. My classes are getting filled up quickly but reach out if you’re interested in any particular time/location. ~ Houston, TX: January 18-22 ~ @Woodturners_Worldwide: January 27-30 If you haven’t already gotten your tickets, use the code “stuart” for $10 discount. Featuring 35 demonstrations representing 9 countries. 80 hours of content. 30 days to watch. $2.25/demo. ~ @WoodworkersEmporium: Feb 28 – Mar 4 ~ @CraftSuppliesUSA: May 9-13 ~ San Diego, CA & Finger Lakes, NY: Dates TBD ~ A few IRDs and private classes. And I’m planning to be at the AAW symposium this year, so catch me there. If you haven’t already watched my free online instructions, be sure to check out https://vimeo.com/woodturning (link in bio). These videos are professionally shot so much higher quality than the ones on YouTube that are usually recorded by volunteers at my demos. I’m working on building a high-tech recording studio from scratch. I’m hoping to start releasing more high-quality instructions videos later this year. Looking forward to updating everyone on this project in the next few months in between my classes and demos. Resuming the SB Tools production is in planning. With the global disruption of the supply chain, lots of kinks to work out. In the meantime, check out @WoodworkersEmporium for any SB Tools inventory if you’re interested. If you do Instagram- here is a link- https://www.instagram.com/stuartbattywoodturning/ For The Newbies- Here's a nice little project to get started in bowl turning. Something everyone could probably use- If a bowl isn't quite what you are up to, watch Jim Rodgers explain how to create a platter. Some really great turning tips! Expand Your Horizons- It seem that more and more electronic devices are finding their way into wood turning. Personal lasers are becoming common place for embellishing and signatures. Now I see that Alan Stratton is making available some 3-D printed items in his Etsy store. Although, not strictly turning related, there has been an informative discussion in the General Woodworking Forum concerning dust collection. @Gerald initiated the thread and @PeteM added some great technical date. Check it out- On the dust collection topic, here is some good information from Robo Hippy New Turning Items- Some sale packages from the folks at Woodturners Wonders- (Click on the image for the link to the sales page) Ruth Niles has the new unique turning blanks in stock- Click on the above image for the link to Ruth's site. We mentioned this sometime back but it is definitely worth another look- Here's the link to Lyle Jamieson's site for prices and purchase information- https://lylejamieson.com/product/fireball/ Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- I have been playing with my laser engraver. Finally was able to understand how the software works with help from a very knowledgeable gentleman in the software user's group. I found engraving signatures/dates on most items is pretty straight forward but rolling pins presented a challenge. I sign the rolling pins on one end. This needs the pin to be held vertically, be secure yet adjustable for focus. Started with a built up block and bored/turned a tapered hole The rolling pins are tapered so to hold them in place a couple of nylon screws to add pressure To allow for focus, the block had to adjust vertically, a couple of brackets with slots, wingnuts and washers I'm using my drill press table as a work surface, the addition of clamping pads to hold the jig to the to the table. First try on a rolling pin- I did get back to the lathe, too! When I did the Easy Wood Tools promotion at the Nittany Woodturners, they raffled off various items. I picked up a piece of black cherry burl and it has been taunting me ever since. Decided it would become a shallow bowl/platter. There is a void that I am not sure if I want to leave natural or fill with resin. This will be the top- The bottom- The void- Safe turning and stay well
  5. Nearing the middle of January already. Rumor has it there's a snow storm brewing for the north east late this weekend. Maybe I'll get to use the snow blower for the second time this "winter". Our Patriot Turners- Our turners have taken a vacation this week, but @Ron Altier's post about adding glitter to an ornament had lots of responses and advice. Read what was said and what Ron did, in this post What’s Coming Up- The Woodturners Worldwide Online Symposium is coming up on January 27 through January 30. https://www.woodturnersworldwide.com/ Click on the above image for the link to purchase tickets. Follow this link for a list of presenters- https://www.woodturnersworldwide.com/demonstrators If you have a social media presence, many of the presenters are offering a discount when registering. Check your favorite turner's accounts to see if they are participating. Lyle Jamieson is offering an IRD on preventing catches- Registration and more information is available at- https://lylejamieson.com/product/january-25-2022-700-to-930pm-eastern-time-tuesday-preventing-catches/ For The Newbies- An instructional video from Stuart Batty on grain orientation- Mike Peace posted a video on gluing tips he used during the creation of some of his turnings- Expand Your Horizons- Some years ago, I turned several "spiral candle holder" as gifts. Here is Alan Stratton's process on adding the spiral to a small box. Warning!! If you don't like to sand, this might not be your go-to project!!! Lyle Jamieson turns a hollow form with natural edges New Turning Items- I'm hoping some new turning items will show up about tax return time! Everything Else- Frank Howarth takes turning design to a whole different level. His imagination (not to mention his shop) seems to be limitless! Rick Turns list of woodturning YouTube videos from last week- Safe turning and stay well
  6. Gerald

    SWAT

This is a sample of what was in the galleries at SWAT. More later I hope as Ida rolls this way tonight.
  7. Congrats to all of the Patriot Raffle winners. We made our fundraising goal! Hope everyone along the east coast is safe and didn't suffer any damage from the hurricane over the weekend. Our Patriot Turners- @Gerald Started a thread that should generate a lot of input. Sanding your lathe projects. You all know that sanding is my second favorite thing in all the world. Please check out what Gerald's setup is and show us your sanding techniques. @Ron Altier has been frustrated by the U/V finish he has been using. Ron applied it to a beautiful segmented turning only to end up with problems. Ron explains his frustrations in his post- @AndrewB Has been working on several projects this past week. He has been fighting a "wobble" problem with some of his turnings. We have been offering suggestions. Maybe one of you has experienced a similar problem and can help solve this elusive gremlin. Andrew also was having some trouble with tearout on a small bowl on which he is working. We've all been there. Maybe you could share your experiences and advice- It hasn't all been problems for Andrew, however. He showed us a really nice bowl he finished- And, he has pen making down pretty good, too! What’s Coming Up- Cindy Drozda has another virtual demonstration schedule for this month- Click on the above image for the link to more information Cindy will also be a demonstrator at the virtual Woodturners Worldwide Symposium Click on the above image for the link to the registration site. For The Newbies- Have a lot here for the new turners this week- You don't need a fancy chuck to turn a bowl. Mike Peace's video shows you how to use a Jam Chuck- In that video, Mike used traditional tools for turning. HSS tools must be sharp to give the best and consistent results. Here's a couple of videos demonstrating the sharpening process on some of the common HSS tools- And a couple of videos covering some of the lathe parts- Expand Your Horizons- Tim Yoder posted a video on turning a sphere. There are some jigs available to help create a sphere on the lathe but this jig is a little different. Carl Jacobson turns a beautiful maple burl lidded box. I really like the "lid pull" he added to the top. New Turning Items- Cheated a bit here. This is the set that Tim Yoder used to make the sphere. https://drechsler-wissen.de/produkt/spannvorrichtung-zum-kugeldrechseln-im-set-74-mm-grosses-set/ Everything Else- Rick Turns videos from last week- Not sure why it happened. In the past, I have used the soap soak method and not had any roughed blanks crack or warp. This one made a liar out of me. It's about 8" in diameter and maybe 5"deep. Turned with no trouble. Came out of the soak with no warping or cracking- Put it in a paper bag with shaving for a couple of weeks and when I pulled it - Three cracks developed. This one and another about 180° around the circumference and one near the bottom. I added the walnut dutchmans and am in the process of returning and sanding. Hope it doesn't end up in the trash. Safe turing and stay well
  8. Our Patriot Turners- @FlGatorwood gave us a heads up about a new "OneWay" lathe that can be used while sitting. Several of our turners have devised their own methods of using a lathe in a sitting position. Check out Steve's post for the link to the lathe and some of the comments and ideas our turners offered- By the way, @FlGatorwood is feeling a little under the weather lately, How about we all send him some positive thoughts and good cheer! @Gerald posted a new topic in the turners tip section. If you have considered textured embellishments, check out Gerald's tip- What’s Coming Up- A reminder that the Mid Atlantic Woodturning Symposium is getting closer- Click on the image for a link to the presenters and their rotation! For The Newbies- Your new lathe came with a "knock-out bar". It probably works great for the manufacturer's supplied equipment. However, as you upgrade to newer accessories, you might find the bar leaves a little to be desired. Mike Peace has a nice video on making a better bar- Expand Your Horizons- Tim Yoder has a 2 part video on turning a thin walled Maldrone bowl. The first part of the video is filled with great tips on prepping this special wood (the second part is linked from Tim's YouTube channel)- New Turning Items- Carl Jacobson posted a YouTube video demonstrating some new turning accessories. I think we mentioned the magnetic light a while back but here's your chance to see it in action! Everything Else- The AAW is making available another free download of one of their recent magazine issues. Follow this link for your free download- https://www.woodturner.org/page/FundamentalsSpecialCompIssue Rick Turns has his July woodturning videos list from YouTube available- Safe turning
  9. The 2018 Raffle is on!!! Please head over to this post and see the prizes from our generous sponsors- Good Luck!! On another note, you may have noticed many of our forums now contain a sub-forum for tips. For the Turners forum, you can find it here- https://thepatriotwoodworker.com/forums/forum/65-wood-turning-tips/ As with any of your posts in any forum or sub-forum, please remember to use "Tags" to help others doing searches for similar content. Our Patriot Turners- Last week, we featured a beautiful platter from @Gerald. Gerald was kind enough to show us the steps he used to create the different colors- Please add your comments to his post at- You may remember that @Steve Krumanaker turned a maple bowl and then use pyrography to create a "rock" finish. Steve also came up with a beautiful display stand that permits viewing from any angle- You can read about how Steve made this in his post- @DAB is considering turning some pens and pencils. He posted an inquiry about what he should think about for equipment and supplies. Pleas check out the post and offer your suggestions- As it turns out, Woodcraft is offering some tremendous close-out deals on a bunch ot their pen/pencil kits. Thanks to @Gerald for the heads up on this one- Woodcraft Pen Clearance @Ron Altier was having trouble with his lathe. His On/Off switch failed. Ron's ingenuity for the repair should be a lesson to us all! What’s Coming Up- Just a reminder, the Mid-Atlantic Woodturners symposium will be held in Lancaster, PA, September 28-30. From The Internet- Tim Yoder posted a neat project for the gardener in your life. We mentioned "Garden Dibbles" in the past but Tim put his own spin on this one- Everything Else- Our administrator, @John Morris has revived several old turning posts from the archives. I think you'll enjoy the trip down memory lane- Had an afternoon to play this past week. Turned some maple finials using my Easy Wood Tools Mid-Sized Micro Detailer. Was going to see what they looked like "ebonized" with India ink but my old bottle had dried up. I hope @Jim from Easy Wood Tools passes along how much I like the new micro (sharp) tip. The taller one is about 3" and the shortes is about 2". Turned completely with Easy Wood Tools. Safe turning
  10. "It was another "Mom" day for me. Errands, appointments and making sure she ate a good supper. Our Patriot Turners- @PostalTom Is having a problem this the brass pen tubes coming out when he is squaring the blank ends. Check out his post and if you have any suggestions, please help him out! @Ron Altier created a beautiful new ornament from scraps. His glue-up was sure to reveal a beauty of a turning- Ron started my showing us what he had to work with- And as usual, we were not disappointed with his creativity- Ron didn't stop here! He also made this gorgeous piece- Ron's description is in this post- Last week @Gerald told us about a platter he was turning. He added the finish and the results are fantastic- Gerald added more to his original post about his finishing technique- @Billy B posted the most awesome Navajo Wedding Basket. I cannot imagine the patience it must take to create such a magnificent work of art- Please head over to Billy's post and share your kudos with him- @oldwoodie posted a nice tip for sealing up that free wood for which we are always searching. His procedure is at- What’s Coming Up- The Virginia Woodturners are hosting their symposium at Fishersville, VA on November 3 & 4. Here's a link to their site and registration information- http://www.virginiawoodturners.com/index.htm From The Internet- The American Association of Woodturners recently held their symposium in Oregon. Pretty long trip for many of us. Thanks to Woodcraft and Woodcraftmarketing, we can get a good look at some of the magnificent turnings that were on display- Everything Else- By now you probably have noticed the new "Home Page" for the Patriot site. @John Morris has been working hard to keep our site modern and fresh. As you watch the various forum images scroll across the top of the page, you can click on them to go to that forum. You and also click on the "Forums" link at the top center of the home page to go to the general forums page. Safe turning
  11. World Wood Day is a cultural event celebrated annually on March 21st, same day as the International Day of Forests, to highlight wood as an eco-friendly and renewable biomaterial and to raise awareness on the key role wood plays in a sustainable world through biodiversity and forest conservation. This unique celebration reminds us all the importance and true value of wood and its responsible uses.
  12. Spent the day riding herd on a bunch of electronics technology students. Our company left early so I have a chance to post this weeks entry. @Steve Krumanaker posted another installment of his laser project. His "Cryptex" is so cool! Check out the complete post and the comments from our Patriot family- @Gerald showed us his hollow vessel turned from spalted magnolia and it is a beauty- Gerald tells us a little more in his post- @PostalTom turned a sweet little bowl made from walnut and poplar. I really like his choice of woods and the small lip at the top. Read what our turners had to say- There is a lady turner, Holly Denney, who I have seen on Facebook. She makes turned snowmen/snowladies. Another turner, who also makes snow people is Mr. David Reed Smith. He recently put up his article on how he does his turnings. The main article is located at- http://davidreedsmith.com/Articles/SnowPeople/SnowPeople.html Within his article is a link to a full PDF tutorial- http://davidreedsmith.com/Articles/SnowPeople/SnowPeople.pdf And a link to his gallery of his work- http://davidreedsmith.com/Gallery/SnowPeople/SnowPeople.html If you have ever turned a bottle stopper, you probably know of Ruth Niles and her stainless steel stoppers. In my opinion you cannot find a better stopper (or a nicer person). Ruth has a really nice combo starter kit on her website. Check it out- https://nilesbottlestoppers.com/woodturning/product/6322-five-star-kit Mike Peace recently added a nice little video on scrapers. Specifically he shows us how to make a burnishing tool to add a burr to a scraper. If you live in or around the Portland Oregon area, the American Association of Woodturners is having a symposium June 14-16. Check out their site for more information-http://www.woodturner.org/default.asp?page=2018Portland I've had 3 pieces of Manzanita laying on the lathe for about a month- trying to see what I can create. I finally decided on a piece to start with but the area to be turned was off center on the piece. Because it would be off balanced, I need to figure a way to mount it. As luck would have it, a turner I follow- Jim Jakosh, posted a similar off balance project and his solution- a counterbalance. I had a shop made hold down for finishing off bowl bottoms. I glued the piece- paper joint- to the wheel. Then added some bolts to the outer rim to create a balanced spin. Spun without vibration and so far the paper joint is holding. I'll just have to see what materializes from within the root. Safe turning
