Good morning a friend of mine has asked if I could make him a set of these plates as gifts for different family members. Does this boarder have a name? That is my biggest barrier. Thank you!

Just about the time of the year when I start having dreams of beginning another school year- and all the things that can go wrong! Our Patriot Turners- @calabrese55 posted one of his segmented bowls in the "What's On Your Weekend Agenda". I love the combination of colors! His post has more images. Check it out here- @Headhunter posted a really neat setup for assisting in making square cuts across a log. He posted it in our "General Woodworking" forum but said it was OK to share it here Looks like it can be helpful for us turners- @Gerald finished up the turnings and dice boards he was commissioned to make I never hear of either of these items. Thankfully, Gerald explained their uses. Gerald also started a discussion about project ideas. He wondered how/if we saved pictures/drawings to be inspirations for our own turnings. He received lots of great comments and examples. Please check out his post and add your thoughts to the others- We are still getting entries on out "What's On Your Lathe" forum. This one from @forty_caliber @John Hechel is passing on his turning skills to a younger generation. What a wonderful way to keep turning alive! This time the turners make their own interpretation of a cherry burl hollow form- Several of our turners use paint as a way to embellish their turnings. Mike Peace has ventured into air brushing as a way to enhance his turnings. This video is his introduction- Fractal Burning was all the rage for a while. It can be dangerous if all safety precautions are not strictly followed. Well, Tim Yoder has found a safe way to create the patterns- Spoiler Alert- Heads up laser owners! 9x2 plate from Bois D'arc. Wood received from a barter with an AAW member. I sent a box full of Pecan, and in return I got a box of Bois D'arc from Iowa. 300mm Macro grain detail .40

This plate has been hanging around for a while and started out as just a test of spiraling. There was a cut in the tenon and I did not think it was salvageable. Finish is lacquer. o last week I decided ti try again. and changed the spiral and added Gilding Waxes. It is small at 7 inches but was a fun piece.

I made a cutting board that came apart. I took one of the smaller pieces and made a plate. Almost went too far. When I blew it off I could feel airr going through to the other side.

If y'all recall I recently did a plate with a reflective powder. Now have found something much easier to apply and with more vibrant results. Welborn Gourd has a Metallic Ink which gives great results. The pattern is from their Stained Glass Stick n Burn collection. This particular pattern was easy to burn . The rim is done in Black stain from Chestnut Stains. Finished with acrylic lacquer.n The Metallic Gourd Ink comes in 20 colors and yes I will be getting more.

Cherry plate with beads on lip -
I have been making pens with bullet shells and then went on to nickel plating them. After that I tried the same method with copper plating. It didn't work out as well as I had hoped. I decided to go with the original formula using copper acetate and distilled water. Success! Should not have varied from the theme. The pictures don't do them justice but believe me they look like a shiny new penny. I also found out that the copper goes over the grass well but does not go over the nickel at all. Here are the best I could get for pictures. Here are all three. Polished brass, nickel plated, copper plated.

Another lovely day here south central Pennsylvania. Maybe spring is on the way! Our Patriot Turners- Member @Bob Hodge asked us how we store our sanding supplies. Several members offered some suggestions. Please check out Bob's post and let him know what you do- Bob also asked for input on a lathe purchase. Specifically, our thoughts on belt driven vs. electronic speed controls. There were several opinions offered on what to look for and why. In the thread, @Artie expanded the question to include some advice on turning tools. The consensus seemed to be that Artie consider Easy Wood Tools because of their easy to learn/use and no sharpening required. Please head over to the post and see if you can add additional information- @Gerald added more information to his post on the Offering Plates he is prototyping. @Ron Altier did repair on one of his beautiful ornaments. Judging from the picture, you would never have known it was damaged! Ron explains what he did in this post- Our own @Steve Krumanaker is becoming quite the YouTube star! For The Newbies- A couple of weeks ago we posted a link to the most recent issue of the Woodworker's Journal Turning Magazine. One of the videos, by Ernie Conover, was how to drill holes on the lathe. For those who missed it, here is the video. Lots of great tips and techniques- Here is a continuation of sharpening techniques, by Carl Jacobson. This video explains the use of additional jigs. Remember- EASY WOOD TOOLS never need sharpening (Big Grin)!!! Expand Your Horizons- I turn a bowl or vase and am pleased with the results. Maybe it is a little neanderthal, but I'm learning. Tim Yoder shares the work of Ron Fleming- abilities I can only dream of- New Turning Items- Lyle Jamieson is offering a new "Jumbo Bar" for his hollowing system. Here is the link to Mr. Jamieson's site and the system information- https://lylejamieson.com/shop/ Everything Else- Well, the rough turned locust bowl blank came out of the water/soap solution, after 3 days. No cracks, no warping. It is now resting is a paper bag/shaving environment. I turned a second blank (10" diameter, 4" tall and about 1" thick) soaked 3 days and it is also in a bag full of shavings. In about 3 weeks we will see if the experiment is a success. Safe turning

Another week has come and gone but our Patriot turners haven't wasted any time in their shop! Our Patriot Turners- @Ron Altier Posted a video of an acrylic bowl that used shavings as a filler within the resin. The author makes a really pretty bowl. Watch the video from Ron's post- You may recall that @HandyDan made beautiful "Inside-out" ornaments. Dan took the time to document the process in a well thought out tutorial for us to follow. Many thanks, Dan! His entire tutorial is in his post- @Steve Krumanaker is scheduled to give a demo to the turning club in which he is a member. He decided he would show them how to make "Knitting Nancy". Steve posted his practice pieces and a video on how the devices worked. @Gerald is getting really good at the off-center chuck Santa brought him. He has added more picture to his last post showing what he has accomplished- Member @hawkeye10 posted a really great question about turning tool sizes. His question solicited more responses than just about any post we have had in quite a while! @Gerald continues to refine the offering plates he is designing. He shows us his latest idea in his post What’s Coming Up- Click on the above images for more details! For The Newbies- We have been looking at chucks lately and Mike Peace has been posting videos for the various manufacturers. In this video he reviews the Record Power SC3 chuck. Mike also received permission to reprint and post an article, from AAW, written by Richard Raffan. The article covers the various chuck jaws and their uses. Several of our Patriot turners have posted their beautiful creations. One of the points of discussion about pen making is the finish. Captain Eddie Castelin has a pretty much foolproof method of applying a CA finish. Some folks like the CA finish, others don't but Capt. Eddie shows us how simple it is to apply. New Turning Items- The other week we mentioned the Inertia Sander. Woodturners Wonders has a really nice one that includes 2" and 3" sanding pads. You just have to watch this and marvel at the technique and skill- Our friends at Easy Wood Tools ( @Jim from Easy Wood Tools ) posted a video of an episode from "Meet The Makers". We have seen this lady here before- Tracey Malady- She is a talented turner. I'm pretty happy with the wall thickness- although it's difficult to really see in this picture- The red and white spots are light passing through the wood and a wormhole After I looked at the above 2 pictures, I didn't like the proportions of the bottom and the thickness (diameter ) on the concave section between the foot and the vase. I reduced the diameter of both and it looks a little less clunky. Now I am trying to decide if I part it as is (after sanding), make a small "lid" or add a lid with a finial. I'm also toying with the idea of removing the "foot" and recreating one with a different species but that might be too busy. Sometimes simple is better. I'm open for suggestions/opinions. Safe turning.

Here is a little maple plate, about 9" in diameter and turned to 1/8" thick. I've done a little piercing on it. Doesn't look like much but there is a method to this madness. Not sure how it's going to turn out or even if my idea will work. May be the last picture you see of it! Steve

You'll see the tails are cut into the side of the cabinet and exposed, I set the tails on the side of the cabinet to lend it downward strength, the mechanics of the joinery will not allow any weight to push down and separate the corners.© Courtland Woodworks
