  1. The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, servicemembers and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States. Membership swiftly grew to over 1 million, and local posts sprang up across the country. Today, membership stands at nearly 2 million in more than 13,000 posts worldwide. The posts are organized into 55 departments: one each for the 50 states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines. Over the years, the Legion has influenced considerable social change in America, won hundreds of benefits for veterans and produced many important programs for children and youth. Following is a chronology of significant dates in Legion history. Source: History
  2. Here is how I save sanding dust to mix with epoxy when I need to fill cracks in my late work. I keep just enough to help me if I am turning something and need to fix/fill a crack on something and I just mix it with some epoxy glue, and it works well for me. Does anyone else have ways of doing it (maybe better than mine)? I bought 25 of these little containers on the internet for like $5 or so.
  3. Came across this site. https://emptybowls.com/ I'd never heard of it before but it might be a good way to find a use for any rejects that you may have lying around the shop. .40
  4. Nobody ever tell me I am over organized. This guy, WOW!!!!
  5. Let's face it, while we like to think we have the memory of an elephant the reality is, no we can't. I'm not talking about the selective memory we have when asked to take out the garbage for the 46th time this week. We all have stuff in the shop, and lots of it. As a auto mechanic I have a rather large tool box, boxes really, and I use them daily. Some many times a day others rarely. And to keep where they are straight I don't like moved to another drawer, or even buying a new box and rearranging where everything goes. Slows me down and time is money. Now at home I am not worried about the time is money deal. But I would like to spend less time looking through drawers for something and more time actually making stuff. For many years I have labeled some drawers but nothing serious. No more, in between projects for the moment I decided the time has come to label stuff, like everything. My neighbor jokes with me about being a "mini home depot". Seems he wasn't too far off the mark. Took me quite awhile to organize all those screws, nuts and bolts and while doing so I am wondering how did amass such a collection? Never mind all the tools. Two nights progress: Don't worry, I have plenty of tape.
  6. December is the month I reserve for projects I want to do in the shop. Jigs, extra storage, reorganization, CLEANING, etc etc. This year I saw that the space behind my sander was nothing more than a repository for abandoned jigs, projects and other assorted stuff. I started out with a grinder plate that extends out on slides when needed, then the 12 inch sander with dust collection. Those led me into getting a run of DC to them. And then finally to this blank space that begs me to make better use of it. Two boxes, the front one houses my rarely used tile saw as well as provides extra space for my sander plate. When I went to build this box I had to account for the slope of the sander. So the top is angles side to side and front to back to match that. The box behind that with the white top I stayed flat. Once I had built the front box I quickly discovered things roll right off the thing. So matching those angles on the back box was not going to work for me. Naturally the space I had left behind the front box did not allow me to make a full top, so I had to split that by 4 inches. Still worked and will always be better than nothing. Gives me space to put small projects to dry. With the Formica clean up is simple, besides someone gave me 2/3 sheet recently. Free being the best price! As always these boxes are color coded to aid in memory of what I put inside them. Also helpful if you send someone to get something you can cite color, size and location. Not a lot of time on project but took several days to get finish work done and final assembly. In all a great addition to my shop. One that utilizes some dead space. Because like everyone else here space in the shop is limited. Funds to build that 10,000 sq foot shop are also limited, as in I have yet to win the lottery or have a wealthy relative leave me a mint. LOL Enjoy and be inspired.
  7. Hello All, I am new to the forum and want to show you where I do my stuff. We have a three car garage and I get the single bay for my shop. There is not a lot of room, only 12'X20' but I have a lot of fun. Since I don't have a lot of space I have to have multi-use work spaces. When I am reloading, my press shares a bench with my router and then it is stored when I am done. I put curtains on my benches to prevent sawdust from collecting on my equipment.
  8. Just saw a handy workshop hint to use pegboard for your tools. While I've had pegboard, I've gotten away from it, thinking it's a relatively inefficient way to store tools. I much prefer my mechanic's chest that sits next to my workbench. A drawer for knives, others for chisels, saws, hammers, measuring and marking, router bits, drill bits, rasps & chisels, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc. I'd take me a 12' wall to hold what my chest does in 30" Besides, it keeps them cleaner and if I get a new tool, I don't have to rearrange everything to get it next to its friends. What's your take on this?
  9. Well I set out this afternoon to do some cleaning in the shop and this is how far I got. Anyone else have days like this?
  10. First I have tell you I have a half garage that is unheated. Then on super bowl Sunday, just before the game, I discovered our side by side frig/freezer had quit and everything was nearly thawed, So much for the game. It took an hour to get the stuff taken care of and most was in coolers...........where else, but in my half of the garage. Then the bottom dropped out of the temperature with highs near zero. This meant that I had to be sure stuff didn't freeze in the garage. One thing I didn't have to worry about was ice for the coolers since we have about 10" of snow in the yard. So what am I going to do in my shop? The new frig came today and so did the temperature. It will be in the 50 range and I will spend time doing something in my shop............. even if it is nothing.
