A slow week here in our turner's forum. Our Patriot Turners- What’s Coming Up- Click on the following images for links to more information- From the AAW- For The Newbies- Sanding our turnings is time consuming. Changing disks on the Velcro sanding pads just adds to the delay. I know @Gerald has a sanding disk for each grit and that can save some time. It also saves some wear and tear on the Velcro. Here's a video showing shop made sanding disk holders- Wooden scoops are always a nice addition to the kitchen. Guess we will have to wait and see. Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- In preparation for each week's "Wednesday's...", I spend some time searching for informative videos. Some come from YouTube. I noticed recently that the YouTube users rating system seemed different. The "Thumbs Up" choice is listing the number of positive responses. The "Thumbs Down" choice doesn't show any negative votes. Thinking this was a little odd, I went searching for the reason. Hard to believe that October is almost half over! Usually we have had a frost by now. Not too much happening, here, this past week- Our Patriot Turners- @forty_caliber finished up a gorgeous multi species bowl for his Mrs. He tells us more about the species, finish and how it got its name- @Fred W. Hargis Jr asked our turners for their input on bowl gouge use. Fred had started turning a bowl and was unsure of just how to get the best cut from his gouge. We had a very informative conversation with a lot of our turners. Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- How about a little fun with Tim Yoder and this year's Halloween project!! After a go of antibiotics and industrial strength decongestants, I was finally able to get back into the basement shop. The first order of business was to make a dust collector "hood" to do the sanding on the last batch of rolling pins. I cobbled it from scraps around the shop but did buy a piece of acrylic at Hobby Lobby. The hood attaches to my PVC port that was built sometime back. This port can be positioned along the length of the lathe as well as placed close/farther from the turning. Front view- the "hood" is 24" long End view- Back view- Interface between the PVC pipe and the collector- Top View- Bottom view- the bottom is a piece of aluminum trim coil. Oblique view- Mistake- the acrylic bowed up as I bent it into shape. The heat gun idea to bring it down was not a complete success To attach the hood onto the PVC, I used a pin through the 1.5" thick interface block and into the PVC pipe- Now, will it work? A strip of what passes for toilet tissue these days IMG_0241.MP4 IMG_0242.MP4 I power sanded 6 rolling pins thru 3 grits and there was no dust on the white bottom. I'm pretty happy. Expand Your Horizons- Mike Peace demonstrates multi-axis turning in this two part presentation. What I found interesting is that Mr. Peace didn't use a fancy jig for holding the offset pieces. New Turning Items- Every now and then the folks at Woodturners Wonders reminds us they that stock some unique woodturning items. There are many, many examples of steady rests available from just about every woodturning store. And even more shop made versions on line. What is new, here, is a unique method of mounting the three wheels. Here's the link for more information- https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/magnetic-homemade-steady-rest/ Everything Else- Last week's list of YouTube woodturning videos from Rick Turns- I was able to start working on the bowls that a friend wanted made. Her husband and son have a small saw mill and they cut down a flame box elder tree. They provided a log that was long enough to make 4 bowls. They also gave me a piece of walnut from which I'll get a few bowls. Turned the logs into blanks - Was able to get 2 of the blanks roughed out- They are resting in the soap and water bath until tomorrow. Then into some shavings for a while. Starting the next two tomorrow. The walnut pieces intrigued me. The sap wood and heart wood were almost perfectly centered. I thought it would make an interesting piece if the outside was white and the inside was dark. That meant making an end gain bowl. Well it sorta worked. If I would have left the walls quite thick, it would have been better but very heavy. It's still kind of cool. Still need to finish the finish and part off the bottom. Not sure how much it will warp/crack as it is turned to finish will still green. The side walls are about 1/4" thick. Safe turning and stay well

This is my early Christmas and late birthday. Looks very solidly built.

a couple of years ago, I wanted to try off set turning, I think that is what it is called. You turn it on one set of centers and then move it to another. Then one idea led to another. I drilled holes, routed edges and had a neat looking piece. Then it started looking like a modern art guy. So I fashioned a head and base. I really like how it came out. My wife loves it. If I had to name it, it would be "TOUCHDOWN"
