Hey folks, I have an idea, the last MWTCA What's It project for June spurred an idea in me that I think will be fun and more equitable for all. At this time, there are two ways you can win the current month's What's It. The MWTCA decides your answer is correct. You are chosen in a random draw. Proposal We would eliminate the random draw as the second way to win, and add the following: Instead of a random draw, for each months What's It topic, within the topic page, a voting poll would be installed. While the month is rolling along we could vote for "Best Answer". If MWTCA decides our answers are not sufficient, than we'd default to the "Members Choice" or "Best Answer" to award the membership too. No more random draws. Here is where the real fun begins! We need to butter up the Primary Winner prize. So, since it's so hard to get a good referenced and researched answer for MWTCA, and since it's so hard to get our answers accepted by the MWTCA, for the legitimate (MWTCA sanctioned) winner, we'll issue the calendar year membership, and along with that, we'll award a tool too. The tool would be in the spirit of the MWTCA, it may be an old Bailey plane, it may be a new hand tool sponsored by one of our supporters, It may be an old clean and usable Disston hand saw. But rest assured, the tool will be as classy as you all are. So to break it all down Primary winner (decided by MWTCA): One calendar year membership, and a hand tool. Alternate winner (decided by our membership): One calendar year membership. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

John, With the first official winner of the monthly MWTCA What's It contest, wouldn't it be cool for that person to have a special Avatar or designation affixed to their profile "snapshot" that appears next to their posts during the month following the selection? Sort of a traveling trophy if you will; maybe even two versions (1) for actual validated winner who identified the tool, then one for someone who is random draw winner... Then at the end of the year or January of following year, throw those 12 names (or whatever the number this year) into a hat, have a blind draw for one winner and that person wins something from the TPW Store or maybe a coffee mug from MWTCA or ???? Hope this all makes some kind of sense...Not sure how complicated the Avatar/ recognition line would be to create and move month-to-month...it is a way to give on-going recognition to both winners & MWTCA..

Ok ladies and gentlemen, we now have our July "What's it" live and ready! The image(s) below is a MWTCA "What's It" image for you to research, and tell us all here in this topic post, just what the heck is it! For a run down on this project and the rules, please see this page at "The Patriot Woodworker and MWTCA "What's It" project" Project details There are none! In this case, no details have been provided but for what you see, as nobody knows what the heck this is. Since we already know what it is, there is a specific question regarding this saw. What we are looking for is a specific answer to the following question. "I picked up this old Disston at a yard sale and I can't find anything like it.....it has a copper blade. It is magnetic, so I assume it's copper coated. Do you have any information on why a saw would be copper? Should I sand it to find the etching?"

Introduction The Patriot Woodworker community is proud to bring to you the MWTCA "What's It" department of images related to hand tools and implements. If you are not familiar with the MWTCA "What's It", please see the current page at https://mwtca.org/whats-its/ We are in cooperation with MWTCA to bring this fun event to you, on a quarterly basis as it is presented by MWTCA quarterly in their publication "The Gristmill". We contacted MWTCA and asked them if we could perpetuate the "What's It" here in our woodworking community in order to bring more awareness and appreciation in the area of hand tools and implements. How it works We will post the "What's It" as they become available through the MWTCA, usually on a monthly basis here in our community in the What's It Forum. Your job is to research the content of the image and tell us what it is, and prove your answer by references and sources and or patents. Answers will be submitted to the Mid West Tool Collectors Association for verification and approval or rejection. The grand prize A one year (calendar year) membership to MWTCA and all of their benefits and publications. A 25 dollar value sponsored by The Patriot Woodworker. Rules This project is open to members of The Patriot Woodworker community only. Sorry, but only members who live in the United States can participate. (Please don't be offended, out of country memberships cost more than our budget allows) All (U.S.A.) members can participate, including our forum hosts and administrators. If an accurate answer cannot be arrived at by the end of the current calendar month's project is posted, a random drawing will be held to include anyone who participated in that months "What's It". One winner will be chosen to receive a calendar year membership to MWTCA and all of it's wonderful benefits of membership. Participants are only eligible to obtain one membership per year. (What would you do with two memberships?) Participants can correctly answer, and reference the "What's It" and wind the Grand Prize multiple times. Current "What's It" will be closed after an answer has been verified or rejected by the MWTCA. The MWTCA only accepts a verified source to support your answer, so one should be submitted with your answer, such as a patent, catalog entry, tool book reference, or a respectable website on the subject. Do not let these requirements prevent you from having fun and submitting educated answers on the subject without verification, we can worry about references later. All answers are welcome, as well as healthy debates regarding "What's It". Links of interest Mid West Tool Collectors Association MWTCA What's It page Tools dealers featured at MWTCA MWTCA Tool Meets Donate to MWTCA MWTCA Facebook page In closing The Patriot Woodworker's wish to thank MWTCA for their cooperation and spirit of sharing, learning, and preservation of our hand tools and implements for generations to come. Our wish is to spread awareness of MWTCA and all it stands for, and to help grow membership in the MWTCA through the "What's It" project here in The Patriot Woodworker community. Please spread the word, tell your friends, join us, and participate in the preservation of history. I'd also like to wish a heartfelt thank you to the following folks for approving this action in our woodworking community. MWTCA President, LeRoy Witzel MWTCA Vice President of Membership, John Walkowiak MWTCA Chairman of "What's It", Rob Hartman MWTCA Treasurer, Vaughn Simmons Thank you gents, and here's to a long productive future between us.

Good Monday Morning Patriot Woodworker's!!! Well, what have yall been up to this past weekend? Did you get some time in the shop? Did you go somewhere special? Or, if it was hot enough in your area, you may have just felt like staying in your home with the air conditioner cranked up and watch some great movies or read a good book! The later was us, my family and I kind of just closed up our home and took it easy, cranked the air conditioner to 78 degrees and hung out with each other, while it was not woodworking related, my son and I had a marathon model building day on Saturday. Our son was building a Stearman WWII PT-27 flight trainer. And I was building a F-14D Tomcat as seen in the image below, we had a dinner table full of model stuff! After working all week long at my day job, outdoors in 104 plus degree weather, I was ready to just call our weekend a shut-in. We did however go for a few bicycle rides locally while the sun was setting, although it was still in the high 90's around that time! But we had to get outside. Charles Nicholls Our Forum Host Charles is finally out of the hospital, for some great news! He is still hurting a tad, and unable to get back to his wood turning as full speed, but he is managing some pen turnings. It's great to have ya back Charles! The Patriot Woodwiki status I know I know! It's been forever since we had this brilliant idea to fire up a wiki for our forum and community, and you have all heard, "it's almost ready" many many times. The wiki software is a different animal, challenging and time consuming and it's just taken a lot longer to get under control than I had estimated. But we are closer than ever! I worked on some more user templates for research article creation this weekend, and I started another seed page for folks to edit and collaborate on. You can view the seed page at Easy Wood Tools. I created a new category called "Merchants" for our researchers and editors to share their subjects regarding the retailers and merchants in the woodworking trades, arts and crafts arena. The MWTCA What's It Don't forget folks, we still need your help to figure out what the heck these implements are! Remember, when you correctly name the implements, you'll be awarded a 1 year membership to MWTCA. Click on the following links. June What's It July What's It Cool Image of the Week So that's if for now folks, have a wonderful Patriot Woodworker week ahead! We wish you the best in life, and be safe in your shops and remember, safety first! If your woodworking operation feels uncomfortable, then it's unsafe!

Good Monday Morning folks! We hope you all had a wonderful weekend and a safe one as well! I was in the shop part of Saturday building a couple jigs for some up coming chairs I am making. The one main jig is called a Side Rung Mortising Jig for the back and front seat posts to accept the side rungs of the post and rung chairs at the correct angles. Here is a picture of the jig being used by the author of the book I am using as a guide called "Chair Making Simplified" by Kerry Pierce. We also want to know in this topic, what did you all get done over the weekend! In life and in the wood shop, share your time with us here, and post some images of your work, or your travels! Charles Nichols Site Host Charles is still in the hospital and recovering from his surgeries, he has been plagued by issues for years and we all pray and hold him in our thoughts. He is not making it here too often these days but he is communicating with friends and family via Facebook, if you'd like to leave a message of good thoughts you can do that at his original post at Hospital Round Two or at his Facebook Page. Our Wiki The Patriot Woodwiki is shaping up, I am working on some templates that are pre-filled out for research page starters for each category. Our members and guests only need to enter the title of the research page they want to create, then click on the ready made template with headers and directions for creating a great wiki page, and that template will populate their article, and then they can manipulate the article as they see fit. We also installed a wonderful interactive map for our wiki at Geolocated Wiki Pages. You can click on a red icon and see the link to the related wiki page. The red marker is placed in a specific location according to the wiki page content. If the page is about a person, the red marker will be in either the location they were born, or the location they died. If the wiki article is about a college for example the red marker will be in the location of the college. If you go to the map, see the red marker in Northern California, and click on the red marker to see a link to "College of the Redwoods". Our Member Map Our Member map has a new default look to it, you can see the satellite imagery of our world at Member Map. You can still view the world with borders, countries, and streets, but the new default imagery just makes it fun. MWTCA We also have a new MWTCA "What's It" for the month of July, check it out and try your hand at historical research into these fascinating old tools and implements, and win yourself a membership to the MWTCA while your at it! I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead and be well, and be safe!

Good Monday morning woodworkers! Well out here in the west we are dealing with sweltering heat and it's hard to even get out and cut grass these days. We'll wait until the sun sets then make a mad dash out and run the mower. The shop is a nice and toasty 90 degrees so it's a tad warm in the old woodshop as well but at least it's in the shade. So, what have you all been up to this weekend in your woodworking endeavors? Please post your pics and stories about your weekend here so we can follow your progress and chime in. Charles Nicholls We have a Patriot Woodworker in the hospital right now, Charles Nichols is dealing with some surgery and discomfort so if you'd like, please drop on by his topic and wish him well at Charles in Hospital. Website FUBAR We had a FUBAR this past weekend, long story short our server was having some issues so you may have noticed our site was down for a while, we apologize for that, there may be some more interruptions this coming week as we work on securing our site with security patches and upgrades and our site is being moved yet again to a server. So please bear with us and thank you in advance for your patience. Homes for Our Troops We are also kicking off another raffle fundraiser for Homes for Our Troops starting appropriately on 4th of July. We'll have some terrific tools up for grabs donated to us for this purpose by our wonderful sponsors. So stay tuned for that! Our Wiki Our Patriot Woodwiki is taking shape as we put the final touches on the user interface and we should finally be opening our wiki up for public collaboration and editing and sharing. Below are a few of the "seed" articles that we planted to give our wiki a jump start and to encourage folks to jump in and contribute their knowledge. Please see links below. Wiki Seed Pages Adze College of the Redwoods Sam Maloof That's that run down for now folks, have a wonderful week ahead and stay safe in all you do, and please keep coming back and share your stories, life, and work with us here at The Patriot Woodworker.

Good Monday Morning Patriot Woodworkers and guests! Here we go again, these weeks just keep rolling by with no reprieve in time. We are already almost half way through the year and I swear it feels like we ended the holidays not too long ago. Time is just flying way to quickly these days. As many may know our community is a big supporter of the MWTCA and all it stands for. I am a member myself and we try to put the message out as often as we can about the going on's of this fantastic organization. There is a big tool meet coming up in Des Moines, IA next month and if anyone is in the area, GO! As a matter of fact, many folks travel to these meets from hundreds of miles away. This meeting is for members only, so you need to join up before you go, membership is $25 per calendar year, and it includes some great quarterly issues of the Gristmill magazine, and one annual reproduction of an old trade manual or tools book. The benefits are many not too mention you are helping to keep this organization live and rolling with your dues. Here is the link to the information page for the event at http://www.mwtca.org/tool-meets/national-meet-information.html And if you do go, please take some pictures for those of us who are not able to attend! We'd love to see you and your images at this tool meet. Below is a copy of a past issue of the Gristmill, when you become a member you receive these wonderful magazines quarterly. And last but not least woodworkers, what are you up to this week! What did you do over the weekend! Please show us your projects images and be safe and sane this wonderful glorious week ahead!

Good Monday morning Patriot Woodworkers! What do you have going on in your shops this week! Inquiring minds want to know! Here we are rocking and rolling and ready for a new week of fun and work in the wood-shop! I am a huge fan of the MWTCA (Mid Western Tool Collectors Association) and every year for the last 5 years I have subscribed to support them. Their subscription starts on the calendar year, so every January you would pay the modest 26 dollars to be a member, have your name listed in the national directory book of which you get a copy, you also receive a really nice reproduction old book of tools, machinery, or something related to woodworking, and on top of that you get a quarterly publication (The Gristmill) delivered to your door. All of these items together are easily worth the dues, but more importantly you are supporting a great cause. These folks main mission is to keep the antique tools history alive and well, and they are very good at it. They also have regional tool meets and conferences, many of them are within driving distance from our members here. I encourage you to sign up with MWTCA, help support a great community of collectors, and help keep our tool history alive. Below is one of the Annual Reproductions you receive with your membership, this particular one I received last year, a really neat old book that is actually brand new due to their professional reproduction, each year MWTCA sends out a different reproduction. Below is a neat video made by Jim Bode Tools showing off one of their tool meets. And finally here is a link to join! Mid West Tool Collectors Association

Each year the MWTCA sends out a wonderful reprint of an old catalog to all its members that make the annual dues worth it in itself, just this action. This year we all got The Simonds Saws and Knives catalog, from 1919. It's a great reprint, brand new, neat cover, good stock and a joy to read. Below is in image of the cover of this years catalog and a couple pages of what the catalog has. For membership information please see MWTCA Membership Information And you also get the quarterly publication, The Gristmill, an wonderful magazine. And there are tool meets and flee markets all across the country that MWTCA sets up and has meetings and get togethers, it's a great organization.
