So I'm thinking the near future may hold a new piece of machinery for the shop. I've looked into mortisers and am curious who is happy with theirs and what model they have. In my shop it would get a fair bit of work as I have plenty of furniture projects in the works but again it's a hobby shop and not a business. Most reviews I've read seem clear that most are not familiar with how they are used and have unrealistic expectations. The biggest complaint I hear is the cutters are poor quality and dull. From what I've read and I expect is in the manuals is that the cutters need sharpening first much like chisels.

Every oncein a while a fella grabs a deal. This morning, a guy approached me before church and offered to sell me a mortising machine. A few years ago he bought a General 75-050 M1 mortiser for a project but never got it out of the box. He offered it to me for $200 and I couldn’t get the money out of my wallet fast enough. -
My son recently bought a used mortiser, as he will be building several railings for his log home. The seller told him not to leave the machine running when not actually cutting mortises, as it WILL heat up. Also, we noticed a bit of a squeal when the bit is turning in the chisel. So, a question for all you woodworkers with experience in using these machines.... Should there be some kind of lube applied to the chisel/bit? And if so, what is safe to use that will not interfere with the finish? John
