Monday? Leave it at that.....did not get a whole lot done over the weekend....and the shop is usually closed on ...Mondays... So....what on the plans for this week? Taking a few planks to a Barn, today...having them all planed down to a consistent 3/4" thickness...then Drawer Building 101...and gluing up a panel for the Top of the case..will see how the week goes...

Antonio Stradivari Italian pronunciation: [anˈtɔːnjo stradiˈvaːri]; (1644 – December 18, 1737) was an Italian luthier and a crafter of string instruments such as violins, cellos, guitars, violas and harps. Stradivari is generally considered the most significant and greatest artisan in this field. The Latinized form of his surname, Stradivarius, as well as the colloquial "Strad" are terms often used to refer to his instruments. It is estimated that Stradivari produced 1,116 instruments, 960 of which were violins. Around 650 instruments survived, including 450 to 512 violins. Good Monday Morning! Good Monday morning Patriot Woodworkers! What did you get done over the weekend, and what have you planned for the week ahead! Inquiring minds want to know. Please tell us what's happening in your shops, your life, and any events going on with you. Thank you for being here folks! Our weekend I would like to say that I did something this past weekend in the ol wood shop, or even around the home, but I had one of the laziest weekends I have ever had in years. I have been quite overwhelmed these past few months with out of home extra duties that involve the care of others, and just a bunch of other things going on in life that presents challenges in ones patience, and my wife and I decided to just pull the plug on the phone, close our home up, and basically unplug from the world for the weekend. It was quiet, even the kids enjoyed the peace of a non-ringing phone. Our youngest girl was tied up all weekend with a school project, and our son with his annual Science project for school was busy, and our oldest girl stayed on campus at college this weekend because her symphony she plays in had a road tour for a concert, so the kids did not need much attention, and my wife and I were left to to laze around and do "whatever". It's been a long time since we did this, I like it, we'll have to unplug "literally" more often! Next week I should start to have some images rolling in for our patio build, as I'll be back on it this coming weekend. Our weekend I am building a shade structure behind our home, and our son is building a fence. How do you teach your son to use a hand saw? Show him the fundamentals, then give him a stack of old fence boards to saw in half so they'll fit in the Green waste can. He begged for my Skil Saw once, only once. Proud of him. He's been using a handsaw off and on for a few years, he said with this stack of wood he finally got it, just leave the kid alone is the best thing often times. Good Monday Morning Patriot Woodworker's and Guests! What did you get done in your shops and what have you planned for the week ahead? We want to hear, and see how you're doing. Life events are fair game too, how's your health, how's your family, how's your job? Bring it on, we are all ears! The Patriot Woodworker Shop Well, I have a curly maple rocker that is sitting in the wings waiting for assembly, my progress on that came to a screeching halt a couple weeks ago when family "stuff" started happening and my time is directed elsewhere. Part of my re-direction went to our 1/2 bath remodel we are undertaking right now, I will start on building a Walnut vanity very soon, I purchased the lumber this past weekend (pictured left) and I'll have some progress images up soon I hope. I purchased the lumber from our local hardwood supplier Reel Lumber. They are a gold mine of hard woods in an area of Southern CA where hard wood retailers are in short supply. Community News Community Raffle: We are coming down the home stretch of our big fundraiser featuring a full set of Easy Wood Tools to be raffled off to a winner! So our new server will be a big, bad, fast machine, and we should not be seeing those pesky 508 errors any more, and your browsing experience will be much quicker which means faster page loads. Community Tip of the Week The heart beat of our community where you can see everything happening, is the "Activity" department. You can go to our Activity Department by click on the proceeding link, but in the future you'll want to reach it by hovering or clicking with your cursor over the "Activity" tab above in our menus tabs, and then click on your desired activity type. You can also create custom activity streams that suit your needs. Hover over the "Activity" tab, click on "My Activity Streams" then click on "Create New Stream". Once there you can select hundreds of combinations of activity streams that you can save as your very own, and you can check back into it daily. Good Monday Morning Patriot Woodworker's! What did you do over the weekend, and what projects do you have lined up for the week ahead? Well here we are, embarking on yet another grand week of life as we head into one of my favorite times of the year, Fall! I know some of our woodworkers in the Mid-West and East-Coast may be starting to prepare for Fall and Winter. Since I live in Southern CA, there really isn't anything we do on a traditional basis to prepare for the Winter months, most of us West Coast folks rejoice at the chance of rain! So, we have just fired up our brand new Home Improvement along with the Patio and Outdoors forums for our members to show off their home improvement and outdoors projects, feel free to drop in and show us what your up to, we know many of you must be doing something to get prepped for the cold season ahead. Here are some ideas that you could discuss at the Home Improvement forums, since Fall is ready to fall upon us. Weatherizing your windows for the cold and wet season ahead, what did you use? Installing leaf guards on your gutters, which system works? Repairing your roof or simply sliding that one shingle back in place, what did you use for the adhesive? Installing the bottom seal of your exterior entrance door, how'd ya do it? Splitting logs for the long winter ahead, what kind of splitter do you own and would you recommend it to others? There are many small items we do on a yearly basis that we take for granted, that would actually make a great Home Improvement topic. Good Monday morning Patriot Woodworkers! Well, here we are starting yet another wonderful new week and one more week off the books till we get to some cooler weather around the nation. In my region we are getting hiccups of very hot weather and then it settles down to just regular ol hot weather. Then we have some pretty good humidity to go along with it lately as well. Sometimes it's hard to pull ourselves into our shops during weather like this, as many of us do not have the luxury of a climate controlled shop or garage, I know I don't. Staying Hydrated All that being said, some of us have to work in our shops, regardless of weather, some make a living from their woodwork, and some just love being out there no matter what the weather. So, heat, it can be uncomfortable, it can be dangerous, and it can be deadly. Here are some tips to stay hydrated. Keep a large water bottle handy to encourage you to drink water wherever and whenever. Be sure to eat fruits and vegetables, which are great sources of water, daily not only to stay hydrated, but also to maintain optimal health. Have a glass of water before each meal. After each trip to the restroom, drink a glass of water to replenish your fluids. Set reminders on your phone, watch, or e-mail to drink every hour. Add a slice of lemon, lime, and/or mint to your water to give it some flavor without adding any extra calories. A word of caution regarding energy drinks: because they contain large amounts of sugar and stimulants, they can be counterproductive to maintaining fluid balance. In some instances, they may even be dangerous; researchers found that brands with caffeine and the amino acid taurine significantly raise blood pressure and heart rate. There's no getting around it. Drinking water is always best. reference: Medical Daily When working out doors with others In my day job as a Land Surveyor, we are always exposed to the elements and we work in all kinds of conditions. Unfortunately when the temperatures get into the low 100's and into the 100 plus teens, we must still keep working, the job needs to get done, and we have deadlines. So we have been trained to watch out for each-other and look for signs of heat stroke and other dangerous symptoms. If you must work outside with a partner or around others, there are signs to watch for in him or her, and yourself. Altered mental state or behavior. ... (I have seen this before, your partner is asking strange questions, they seem aloof, they cannot concentrate or perform simple mental tasks, such as adding 2+2.) Alteration in sweating. ... (Sweating is a good sign, if your partner stops sweating, that's bad!) Nausea and vomiting. ... (This is bad, they are already on their way towards stroke) Flushed skin. ... (Pale, highly pink, pasty skin) Rapid breathing. ... (If your partner is rapidly breathing, it's nearly too late, this is a very bad sign) Amber color urine. .... (This is the beginning sign that you do not have enough fluids in your body, your pee should be close to clear or a pale yellow) If any of the conditions above appear in your work partner or you, you must immediately get them to a cool location, inside an automobile with air conditioning, under a tree with shade, in a structure with air conditioning, anywhere cool and shaded. And have them drink regular temperature water, ice cold water is not good, it can shock the system, but if it's all you have, you need to let them drink it. It's hot folks! So keep an eye out for yourself, keep an eye out for the guy working next too you, and be safe and don't push yourself! The goal of any work day is to get home alive and in one piece.
