  6. Dear folks, I have been in contact with Mrs. Hine, the mother and wife of our 2020 Adopt a Wounded Warrior Family for Christmas project. I was informed a couple months ago that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, at that time diagnosis and staging was kind of up in the air, and over the last few weeks we have finally gotten more precise information from the family and I feel it's time to offer up some prayers for Mrs. Hine. Mrs Hine is scheduled for a double mastectomy on June 14, and she and her family will need all the help they can get. For now, I'd like to offer up this prayer to our friend Briana Hine. "Please pray that the Lord Jesus Almighty heal my friend. Help God take away the cancers that are consuming her body. Help her to survive this, become stronger, and help spread the Lords love. Be with her family through this trying time. Help them to flourish in strength and understanding." AMEN Also, I have decided that a good portion of our current community fundraiser proceeds will be redirected to Briana's family to help provide meals during her recovery, we will order food for them to be delivered through their special portal created at: Meal Train for Briana (Bree) Hine WWW.MEALTRAIN.COM Hi Everyone! This meal train is for Bree and her family. Many of you already know that our sweet Bree has been diagnosed with... If you would like, feel free also to take up a day for the meal train and have food delivered to their home, even if you are a state away, you can participate in this, and order food locally to be delivered. If you do decide to take a time slot to have food delivered to the family, please let us know here which slot you took. Thank you all for your prayers in advance, and your support. We love you Bree! You'll get through this lady!
  7. The Drawing Dear all, our contributors/donors names have been extracted from our data base and the personal checks we received were included as well, the single and multiple name entries were hand entered into a text (.txt) file by the amount contributed, the text file was then copy and pasted into an online Random Name Picker. As the names were drawn, they were assigned to each item provided by our sponsors in the same order as listed at the Warrior Family Project Page. I wish all who contributed could walk away with something, but I know that was not your priority, the family was at the center of all this, and I greatly appreciate that from you all. Recipients We'd like to congratulate the following recipients of the wonderful machinery and tools donated by our sponsors. Laguna 14|12 Bandsaw - @PostalTom Easy Wood Tools Parting Tool - @Masonsailor Easy Wood Tools Parting Tool - @Steve Krumanaker Woodriver Standard Block Plane with Adjustable Mouth - @Cliff Woodriver No.4 Bench Plane - Alfred Tickell Our Sponsors We also want to issue a hearty thanks to our sponsors of this annual tradition here at The Patriot Woodworker. Woodcraft Supply, Easy Wood Tools, and Laguna Tools, thank you for all your support in the past, now, and hopefully into the future. We are very appreciative of your support, we couldn't do any of this without your help. What's Next For our prize recipients, please message myself with your shipping address, so I can inform our sponsors where to ship your item. Also, within the next two weeks, we'll be doing the financial review of this project and once we get it all squared away and the numbers jive, we'll disclose the results here, and a check will be drawn for the remaining funds to be sent to the Hine family. I am thinking, and this is just an off the top of my head estimate, we brought in just under 3000.00 and we should be able to get a check out to the family in the range of 1500.00, I am sure this will help get them off to a better 2021. Remember, 100 percent of your contributions go to the family project. Thank you all once again, I am personally very proud of what you all accomplished here for the Hine Family, I know our Admins and Staff are proud of your efforts as well. You all did this, we just stood by and watched it happen, we are forever grateful for all you do Patriot Woodworker's and Guests, and so are the families we support each year.
  8. I've been working on a present for my son and his family. We've all seen the clothes trees we put in the corner of our bedroom, on which we can hang a robe, belt, etc. This is modeled after that concept, except that my stocking tree will look like what I just described, but had it's growth stunted. It will be only about 4 feet tall, give or take a couple of inches. It is being made in three sections. A base, a bottom section that will be joined to the base with a tenon, and a top section, joined also to the bottom section with a tenon. The top of the top section will have a finial. At least, that is the plan if I can get everything done right. This is the base. The legs are joined by half laps, or is that just a lap joint? Most half laps I have seen are only connected on the ends, like a frame. This is a shot of the bottom section, shortly after I started working on it. The holes are for pegs to be glued in later, on which to hang the stockings. I am putting in more pegs than will be needed for stockings, in case they want to decorate it. On the other end is the tenon, and a mounting block for the headstock on my lathe. The mounting block will be cut away later. This is shot #2 of the bottom section. Better shot of the peg holes. The square section on this end will remain, and I will drill a 1" hole in the center of the block to accept the tenon from the top section. Once everything is glued together, I will work down those connections so that they look better. Shot #3 of the bottom section. More peg holes, and some coves and beads. I obviously need more practice on coves and beads, but they actually came out better than I expected. BTW, I just purchased a 1/2" spindle gouge from Carter and Son Toolworks. I am using both traditional and EWT tools (a little redundancy there, sorry about that) on this project, trying to learn as I build. Top section. Just started it today. Tenon on the left, mounting block to be cut off, and another set of peg holes. The blank section on the right, which will be the "top of the top", will have a finial turned into it. I am hoping to put a couple of beads in between the two sets of holes, but I don't know if I have enough room to do that without every thing looking too busy. A cove will go in the area below the holes and the tenon area. This project is being made from 3" square hard maple billets which I purchased from Woodpeckers when they ran a sale on them. I am finding out why this wood is named HARD maple, but that is a different story. Suffice it to say, when I tried to rip one of those pieces on my table saw, I would up having to repair my saw.
  9. The gift shop that displays a few of my turnings sold fifteen ornaments for me this year and several honey dipper lids. I don't want my hobby to be a job but a little extra cash lets me spend for the shop without feeling guilty about it. More about that in a minute. I'm working through a batch of honey dipper lids for the spring season now. There will be 25 this time. All of the lids are completed and I have 23 dipper stems done so I only really need to do a couple more tomorrow. However, I have nine more blanks prepped so I'll turn them all and put some in the kitty for next time. Tomorrow I'll also get the laser fired up and etch some of the lids, about half of them probably. Now, about spending some of my stash. I've been intrigued by CNC for a few years, even more so since I got the little laser. I have some ideas about doing some inlay plaques for ornaments and I'm hoping to do it with a little cnc machine. Found this on Amazon. Very affordable at under 250 bucks. It is very small and I'm sure very light duty. It's supposed to have a working area of about 11"X 7". I figure if nothing else it's an inexpensive way to learn about the process and whether or not my ideas will work. Surprisingly, these machines get mostly favorable reviews. We'll see how it goes. I will finish the honey dippers before I mess with it to much but I'm anxious to explore the possibilities.
  10. Introduction Every year The Patriot Woodworker's adopt a Wounded Warrior or Gold Star family for Christmas. We do this through a great veterans support organization named Operation Ward 57. The Patriot Woodworker's submit an application to Ward 57 to be accepted to receive our family for Christmas, and each year we are chosen to participate. And each year, our sponsors donate wonderful items for us to giveaway for this cause. We use 100 percent of your contributions to purchase gifts for the kids, and a Christmas dinner for the family and to fund related project expenses such as shipping fees for gifts. Our Mission We need your help to accumulate funds for Christmas presents for our Wounded Warrior adopted family, who has given much to our nation in physical and emotional sacrifice and much more in family sacrifice. The Wounded Warrior Family I have had the honor of communicating with Mrs. Hine and learned much about her wonderful family, her husband, the kids, and they are of course just really great folks. I could, in my own words introduce the family to you as I always do, but I thought this time I'd let Mrs. Hine's own words stand for her family, with her permission I am sharing our communications. The purpose our woodworking community was created is for this reason, to help those who have served us, and paid the price. Remember this is not charity, this is not a hand out, this is payback! Thank you sponsors! We also need to thank our sponsors Woodcraft Supply, Laguna Tools, and Easy Wood Tools for their generous support and for donating those wonderful items for the raffle! For without them, we would not have a community, nor would we be able to perform the work we do. Thank you guys! 11. Made a couple of ornaments today for a giveaway at church.
  12. I thought I would move this one over here. So I came home from a trip to find one of my SS's missing. It was the Power Pro that I have used for years as my lathe. It was a misguided attempt by my wife and son to get me a new lathe for Xmas and give my son a second SS. He is a pretty serious woodworker in his own right and has wanted a Power Pro for a long time. He did pay for half the new lathe for which he could have easily purchased a PP upgrade. A new lathe in my shop would require that I get rid of one SS no matter what due to spatial restrictions and the sentiment was very nice. I would have given him one of the SS to make room anyway, just not the PP. My son makes a ton of money and can easily afford to buy whatever he wants in the way of tools so economics is not an issue. Anyway yesterday turned into a very emotional time but we got it all settled. We will swap out headstocks so I get my PP back, along with all my accessories. He also took my nova chuck and heavy duty tool rest. The rationale was that the new lathe is coming with a new chuck and therefore I would not need the Nova. In the words of Captain Ron : GET YOUR darn BEER MATE. So as of last night he gets a regular headstock and his wife is getting him a PP upgrade for Xmas and I get my stuff back and he can keep the SS. They both meant well so I am not angry anymore but it was a little weird. The flip side of all this is they both know the history here. I have been turning on a SS all my life. My father had an old greenie that I turned on as a boy and I have been turning on one ever since. I have had a larger lathe in the past ( Powermatic) and was impressed with everything but the floor to spindle height which is way higher than the SS. It always felt awkward as I am used to leaning down on the chisel with my weight and did not feel I had the control I have with the SS. In all fairness I didn't give it very long time for adjustment before I went back to the SS. This was right about the time then PP came out and I also found a universal tool rest for sale which along with hanging a 400lb tool chest from the tubes changed the SS to a much better lathe. The only limitation was the swing over bed distance which is limits the size turning to about 13". This is where the current motive for my wife comes into play. She for the most part designs the house and I build it. We have done this for 40 years. She periodically comes up with a need for me to turn an object much larger than 13" in diameter which is the current case, and to her seemed logical to buy us a bigger lathe. The new lathe has 24" capability so it will give her more options. Always an interesting journey when she has more options. Paul
  13. (As you may know) I am not a turner, but a friend of mine turned these and his wife will paint. He found a set of 3 at a craft store for $110 and decided "I could do that"
  14. @Gerald reminded me of an additional sale at Woodcraft- Click on the image for the link to Woodcraft sale pages
  15. Another Christmas is here As you all know, every year we adopt a wounded warrior or gold star family for Christmas and we all come together and provide Christmas presents and food for that family, I am proud to announce that today we have been invited back to Operation Ward 57 Adopt a Family For Christmas event for 2020. I am very proud that they keep having us back, and I am very proud of the big way you all come through for these families in the past. I just completed the application and I submitted it just seconds ago, later this month we'll know who our family is, and how many kids we are supporting! Our Past Projects Follow this link and scroll towards the bottom of that page to see some of our past projects with Operation Ward 57 Thank you In advance, I'd like to thank all of you who will no doubt participate in this annual tradition of ours to bring a little happiness to a warrior family for Christmas 2020! Stay tuned for your marching orders, and here's to another great Christmas Season! As always, 100 percent of the proceeds for our fundraiser raffle will go to the family project.
  16. Can you believe it? Tomorrow is the first day of October! One of own, @Charles Nicholls, could use some prayers and good thoughts. Charles is in the hospital and hopefully recovering but if you could take a moment and send some positive energy his way, I'm sure it will be appreciated. A little more information is here- EDIT EDIT EDIT--- Just received word that Charles has been moved from the hospital to a rehab facility. Things are looking up! Our Patriot Turners- Last week @Masonsailor showed us his beginning Christmas present project. He has added even more to that post- @AndrewB must sleep by his lathe . He has completed several projects this past week. First up are a couple of maple bowls- His post explains what he did- Next, he used up some of his scraps and turned a small bowl- Andrew used some of his poplar to turn a couple of bowls. Notice his skill level improves with each project. Check out the wall thickness on these - The astute observer will see that Andrew's lathe went from Wen orange to Harbor Freight green. His Wen lathe was having some issues with losing power and erratic speed control- His HF lathe uses a Reeves drive speed adjustment and doesn't slow down much below 600 rpm's. Andrew experiment with a speed controller but experienced some difficulties. Thank goodness @Larry Buskirk, was around and helped him determine what was happening and why. What’s Coming Up- If this pandemic has had a positive side, it's that woodturners all over the world are turning to virtual demonstrations. Those of us who cannot afford to travel can still learn from their teachings. If your woodturning club is looking for this type of event, Glenn Lucas is offering large group/club instruction. https://www.glennlucaswoodturning.com/product/1½-hour-remote-demo-to-a-woodturning-club/ For The Newbies- Getting the smoothest possible finish, directly from your tools, will reduce sanding time and expense. There are a couple of techniques, using traditional tools, that can really help. Lyle Jamieson demonstrates the "push" and the "pull" cuts Finally, here is an unedited Q & A video from Mike Waldt where he answers some questions about how to hold your work on the lathe- Expand Your Horizons- Really nice, short video from Alumilite explaining the Science Behind Resin: Epoxy vs Polyurethane- Looking to create that one of a kind turning that no one will believe came from a lathe? There is a product called "compressed wood" and it can free your imagination. This article is from is from the AAW AW2906p25-291.pdf Last week we saw a video for turning a "square" bowl. Here, Mike Peace turns a "three corner bowl" New Turning Items- Getting the consistent grind on your gouges can be frustrating. Ron Brown has come up with a set up block to help make repeatable grinds- https://www.ronbrownsbest.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=737 Our most generous sponsor, Easy Wood Tools, shared a video from Tracey Malady. She demonstrates the EWT mini hollowers. Thanks @Jim from Easy Wood Tools! Everything Else- Last week's YouTube turning videos from Rick Turns- Ready to ride off into the sunset (baby shower)- Safe turning and stay well
  17. Another week in the books. We've had a beautiful stretch of nice weather here in South Central PA. Unfortunately it has been so dry that the forest service is predicting very muted colors on the trees as the the leaves change. Our Patriot Turners- @Masonsailor reminded us that Christmas isn't that far away! He has started in on his gifts already He received lots of positive comments on this ice cream scoop- Of course, @Ron Altier is always prepared for Christmas! He gave us a look at a couple of new ornaments he turned. As always, Ron's pieces brought lots of comments- See his post for the process and finish he used- @AndrewB has been busy with bowls. The first is a pair made of Bhilwara wood. Check out this post for his description of what he did and some of his techniques. He also posted a Canary wood bowl. With this one, Andrew wasn't sure about the shape. Please see his post and give him your thoughts on it Andrew also worked on a couple of birch glue-ups to turn into bowls- In his posts he shows us how he did the glue-ups and also included a video on the turning process- What’s Coming Up- I couldn't find any new events. I suspect the folks who organized the Virtual Craft Festival on YouTube will have another event but I cannot find any definitive information on this. For The Newbies- A several informative videos this week. First, Mike Peace helps us sort out the various parting tools and their uses- Gouges! What's the difference? Here's a video that explains the differences between spindle gouges and bowl gouges @AndrewB said he was having trouble using his new inertia sander. I found this video, from M. Saban Smith, explaining how to use these sanders. This starts at about the 5 minute mark- Expand Your Horizons- @HandyDan was kind enough to send me the link to this video. The author demonstrates how to turn a multi axis "square bowl". Really Cool and you get 2 bowls from one glue-up! As noted earlier, @Ron Altier and @Masonsailor have been working on Christmas ideas. Here's one from our generous sponsor, Woodcraft, on making a keepsake ornament- I found this interesting. I'm a jig junky and will spend days building jigs that I would probably would not even need. Here is an example of what can be done with knowledge from the right person- New Turning Items- Sorry, save up your lunch money. Maybe next week! Everything Else- Rick Turn's list of YouTube videos from last week- The rocking horse is nearing completion. Mimi has the mane finished and the tail is almost ready to install. Safe turning and stay well

To the best of my ability I have shown a full disclosure in this topic, if you see any errors or accidental omissions please feel free to call us out here by replying to this topic. I am not perfect, so I may have missed something. Screen shots of the family gifts that you, our generous donors purchased the children. Each child received a gift card for $200.00 Mom and Dad each received a gift card for $200.00, mom is going to use hers for a day at the spa, and dad is an avid movie watcher, he is going to use it to go to the local theater with family a few times. The $100.00 gift card was for their family Christmas dinner. Our initial response to our family after being selected to sponsor Some Quotes from Mom of the family The below quotes are from emails we had with our adopted Family mom, we had many emails together, I could not share more than what I have as in doing so, could exposed the identity of our family. Above all during our communications, I made sure that she understood, no thanks was or is ever necessary, we are simply paying back what we owe to her family. Us Americans and much of the world, we owe our freedoms because of the man of this family who served, who answered the call, and paid the price. For those of us sitting at home and enjoying our lifestyle and freedoms to move about and perform our daily routines and rituals, make no mistake, if it wasn't for the men and women of our United States Military, our lives would change in a heartbeat, without our military, we have no protection, without protection, our shores would be over-run by those who would exploit our weakness if we did not have those who serve our nation, standing post with rifle in hand, and willing to do the un-heard of. Thank you to our adopted family. This family is still paying the price. In closing We want to thank everyone again for their participation in the 2019 Christmas project, we are very proud of how our Patriot Woodworkers, guests, and our wonderful sponsors, Easy Wood Tools, Laguna Tools, and Woodcraft Supply came to the table, and made this all happen. More surprises We had some members of The Patriot Woodworkers ship some physical items to us, to be transferred to our adopted family, I took pictures of those items, and I will post a separate topic relating to those handmade crafts, they are very special, and you'll all love them!
  19. This is the one that is off center and has some really bad places in it. I think my wife made, it At least she wouldn't let me toss it. The main body is pine and it did everything you wouldn't want to happen. I used pine because I was experimenting and did't want to waste good wood. The inside is painted black to cover all the tare outs inside. It also broke in two pieces. I guess as long as she likes it.......its ok.
  20. First batch of ornaments for the year. Mostly maple, cherry, and walnut, there are a couple sycamore globes. There is one sea urchin ornament, that one has ebony finials. We spent a few days on Jacksonville beach with my wife's brother and his wife. Two of our best friends in the world. Picked some sea urchins and this ornament will go to them as a remembrance. Most of these are dyed "inside out". A couple local gift shops sell a few of these and those are the most popular. To me, it's hard beat just plain wood grain. Thanks for looking! Steve
  21. Random Draw Recipients We'd like to congratulate the following recipients of the items contributed by our fabulous sponsors. We also want to thank all who participated in this wonderful project, we raised more than our goal, and our adopted family is set up for a wonderful Christmas morning, thanks to you all! And, a hearty congratulations to the winners of the machinery and tools donated by Laguna Tools, Woodcraft Supply, and Easy Wood Tools, we can't thank them enough. Please, each recipient, contact me via messenger and leave your shipping address, thank you all once again! In doing so would "out" the family and cause more hardship to them. Our adopted family has already gone through enough by serving our nation and paying a great price. What we can share is: The father and husband served our nation in the US Army. He is now on 100 percent disability with varying issues from PTSD to physical injuries including Traumatic Brain Injuries. Though many call Dad the hero of the family, the family themselves will call Mom the hero, as is typically the case when you have a caregiver situation as this family does. They are blessed with four beautiful children as follows. Boy in his late teens Boy pre-teen Boy pre-teen Girl toddler Your Comfort We understand the inferences that "Anonymous" implies, some folks may be a bit skeptical to contribute to an anonymous cause. So to help alleviate your concerns, I would like to encourage you to contact any of our forum hosts or admins for your general questions regarding the family. Our Forum Hosts and Admins are completely familiar with the family, they have seen the family, and they understand the history of the family, so they will be able to confirm to you the validity of this cause. Please keep in mind, under no circumstances will our Forum Hosts or Admins be able to disclose any more information than what has already been disclosed here, you will only be able to have confirmation that our Adopted Family is indeed with us, and needs your help. Please contact our Forum Hosts or Admins with your concerns by clicking on their names at our "Staff" page. https://thepatriotwoodworker.com/staff/ Rules Sorry, only Residents of the US and Canada may participate. Outside countries may contribute but you will not be entered into the system for receiving items due to shipping costs. If you are in an outside country, and do contribute, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. All are welcome to participate, members, forum hosts, admins and non-members. (John Morris (Founder) and family may not participate). Please allow 1 to 3 weeks for delivery of prizes, most of the time prizes are sent out immediately. You may contribute as much funding as you like to earn entries into our random draw. Your contributions will be accepted up to December 20th 12pm Eastern Time, at which time project will close and item recipients will be chosen. 4 names will be randomly drawn by Random Picker software, and items will be awarded in the order of names drawn, starting with the Laguna Bandsaw, then the Easy Wood Tools, then the Woodriver hand planes. An apology I apologize for the current method of contributing funding to this project as cumbersome as it is, our usual way, and very easy way we've used in the past had to be eliminated due to current "Raffle" laws governing our state of California, so I had to create this work around. This will be the last year I perform this event from my home state of California due to restrictions. For next years Christmas Family event, we will have a Patriot Woodworker host this event from their home state that allows such fund raising activity. We will not quit, we'll just find away around it! Our Veteran and Gold Star families need us! To contribute to our Adopted Family please click on "Donate" button (The project is now closed, thank you!) This year, the items our sponsors have donated can be seen in the image below, these are some great prizes folks! You can donate only 2 dollars with multiple entry bargains, and your odds of receiving a sponsored item are very high given our typical turnout. To view the entry fees, and to purchase your entries please click on the Donate button above! A full accountability of the proceeds will be reported on at the end of the project so you know your hard earned money was used for our Adopted Family. 22. Ok Patriot Woodworker's,how'd yall do! What did Santa bring you and your shop! We had a pretty mellow Christmas this year, mama and me promised each other we'd not exchange gifts, but we did manage a couple nice ones for our kids. An Ipod 5h Gen for our youngest girl along with some books she wanted. Then we got a set of books that our oldest girl wanted, she loves the Bill O'reilly series of killing books, Killing Lincoln, Killing Patton etc. So we set her up with those and she wanted some books by William Buckley and a hand full of other books. So now she can go to school armed to the teeth for debates. Our boy scored some nice clothes and books. All went well, and we had a great time all the while not losing sight of the reason for the season. I have the greatest gift in the world, a healthy family (but for me, dealing with this incredible cough and flu!), and you guys! Thank you Patriot Woodworkers and staff for being here, and helping and contributing to our community. Let us not forget those who have served our country and paid the ultimate price, and let us not forget those families who are putting out a place mat at the table tonight for their deployed soldier or lost loved one. So, how about you all, any cool tools or machines that ended up under the tree this year?
  23. You gotta love the guys at Veteran Owned Black Riffle Coffee Company!
  24. For the last half dozen years or so I have been making ball and cup games and taking them to the volunteers at the local Akron Children's Hospital. This year I decided to change it up and make Harry Potter wands. I have a dozen done so another dozen to go. Made them from some 5/8" birch dowels 48" long. Each one yields four wands. The handle comes from some spindles I salvaged from a crib I saw on garbage day some years ago. Each spindle yields four handles so they work well with the dowels. Here is the dozen done so far. There are seven similar ones and that is the design I am going with. I guess there is no exact model for them.
  25. Stack cut a total of 8 each, 1/2" birch ply (2 at a time) & 1/4" (4 at a time). They need cleaned up a bit & then we'll add a splash of color, then a coat of spray poly later. Patterns are Patrick Spielman & Travis from Scrollsaw Village.
