For those of us sitting at home and enjoying our lifestyle and freedoms to move about and perform our daily routines and rituals, make no mistake, if it wasn't for the men and women of our United States Military, our lives would change in a heartbeat, without our military, we have no protection, without protection, our shores would be over-run by those who would exploit our weakness if we did not have those who serve our nation, standing post with rifle in hand, and willing to do the un-heard of. Good Monday Morning! Good Monday morning Patriot Woodworkers! What did you get done over the weekend, and what have you planned for the week ahead! Inquiring minds want to know. Please tell us what's happening in your shops, your life, and any events going on with you. Thank you for being here folks! The Morris home has been busy and not so busy at the same time. Our youngest girl came home from Army Basic Training for Christmas, she arrived on the 19th of Dec and she is leaving January 2nd. Apparently these days the Military sends home trainees for Christmas, and the staff for two weeks, whether they are in Basic or AIT (school). So we got to have our baby girl home for Christmas. She has been dealing with some challenges, she was injured and had to be recycled through basic training, she fractured her pelvic bone, and has been marching on it for weeks, so she has had some time to just sit still, relax, and get it on the mend while home, unfortunately it will not be completely healed when she returns but she has vowed (against our wishes) to keep on through the pain, and complete basic training, and when she reports into the school, she'll see medical staff and get healed. But we've had her here at home, and it was one of the best Christmas's ever, there is a special feeling when a child comes home from the military for the Holidays, I know some of you here experience this often. All I can say is, we waited on her hand and foot, and her brother and sister were right in there with us helping her out, and making her stay with us comfortable and happy. Image at left (mama, daughter, me dad) is the night her mama and siblings drove down to San Diego and brought her back from the airport, she flew in from Ft. Jackson SC, she'd been up for a day and half processing out for the trip and traveling! I came home from work to an empty home, and I got her favorite "Dad Meal" ready for her (chili and cornbread) while they made their way home. When she arrived the dinner was ready, the fireplace was going, and the dogs were happy to see her home, and she ate, and ate, her first home cooked meal by me, and she talked and talked, and we just enjoyed the first night with our daughter completely. So that was our Christmas, we hope you all had a wonderful Christmas as well, and you'll roll onto a wonderful New Year as well! Today has been a long day, started at 4:30 am and lasted till 4:30 pm. Got up early today and hit the deer blind with my son. Had deer everywhere and unable to get a shot. We were bow hunting and just nothing in the right place with a good shot. I had to come in at 8:30 am to go to work at the range. Wow was it busy today. Lots of folks with family in and some came to shoot while others did Black Friday shopping. I got home and laid down to catch a nap and slept longer than I meant too. Oh well it was all good. So we had an awesome show last weekend to finish off the year. We took orders to personalize some of the cutting boards. I thought I would share a few of them with you. I did the engraving with the laser attachment for my Shark HD4 CNC. Its no a powerful laser but does a good job for things like this. So I got them all finished Wednesday so I could spend time with my family Thursday and then get in the short hunt this morning. Tomorrow I’m planning on finishing these natural edge shelves made from White Oak. Four shelves about an inch and three quarters thick, 30 inches long. Just a little more sanding on the edge and they get a clear finish. My wife and I are heading out for a little R&R to celebrate out 45th anniversary and a Christmas present for both of us. Just a little quite time. What’s on your agenda this weekend. I know leftovers are but what about your other plans. I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. Well I missed last Friday and have just gotten home from working then picking my wife up at her work and eating supper so I’m just now getting my Friday post done. Thanks for your patience with me. Wednesday I was invited to look at and see if I was interested in purchasing some lumber and turning blanks. A gentleman that used to stop by my booth at First Friday passed away two years ago. His wife is just starting to sell off his lumber and blanks. One of his favorite things was to turn rough bowls and then sell them so people could finish them after they had dried and stabilized. Wow there was a room full of bowls just waiting to be chucked and finished turning. I was like a kid turned loose in a candy store. Now I just got to narrow down my choices and see what I can acquire. I was so thankful to be asked to go through his work, lumber, blanks and a few tools. I’ll let you all know soon what I decide to purchase. Here are a couple of samples of what was there. I can hardly wait to get back over there. Today has been a long needed rain soaking here and more to come over night. Like a lot of places, we have been in a drought situation for a couple of months. Thanks for the rain. We are in cutting board mode at the time. Getting ready for one of our large shows and the last of the year. This is a three day show and they moved it up a couple of weeks earlier so we are going wide open making cutting boards and other items for inventory. We finished this batch on Wednesday. Yesterday I got a batch in the first glue up and today my son got them cut into strips. Before he had to pickup kids at school he was able to get a couple also glued in the final End Grain set. Last night I got most of these sanded and ready for engraving our logo on them. A few of them had some spots that we epoxied. Also got eight 6x6” Cheese Boards ready for engraving. And lastly before I came in last night I got 2 large size boards oiled and they will be ready to go in the storage box. Tomorrow will be finishing gluing and cutting and engraving and oiling boards. Whew I’m already tired. Sunday afternoon will be celebrating one of my granddaughters 14th birthday. Hard to believe she is 14. Been busy this school year, she made cheerleader for 8th grade. Finally some cool weather and some shop time this week. I have been working most of the week on the CNC machine, but I did get another set of cutting boards ready for the next glue up today. I found a guy that had a 3D set of grips available for download and they are very nice models. For the moment I’ve lost his name and link, but I’ll go back through my history and find it to give him credit. I cut one plain set from walnut to try them out and check sizing. I did have to open up the screw hole just a bit but it was close. The other sets ive made this week are still in the blank so I can flip them and made a cut on the back. Figured I’d run several sets before I flipped them so I could do them all at once. So so here is a set from Walnut with an American flag. I did the flag for this set. Bloodwood with checkering. Maple set with checkering. Two sets of Bloodwood with dots. Bloodwood with texturing. Here is a picture of them all. I’ve created several more options that I just need to run. Tomorrow I'm headed to Birmingham to shoot in an IDPA match with a friend. That’s pretty much my weekend. What’s on your agenda? The heat is still with us here in Alabama and we are in a drought situation. Seems like in the spring it rained every day and we had record flooding. But it’s supposed to be cooling off here beginning this weekend and I must say I’m ready for some cool weather, but not yet ready for cold weather. This weekend I’ll be gluing these cutting boards in the end grain configuration. Starting to get get ready for our big end of the year Christmas show. Seems strange to say that with it being upper 90’s today. But it is that time. In the morning I’ll cut them into strips and glue them. I’m finishing this large thick Cherry Mantle. It has a bracket so that it looks to be a floating mantle. These work great as I used them before on some floating shelves. I routed the back so the bracket will be flush on the back and it has four rods that go about 6” into the mantle. I left it a little proud here so I can get it out. The bracket will get mounted to a 2x12 that is in the wall then the mantle will slide onto the rods. They are a tight fit but that’s what you want. Just need to do a bit more sanding and then spray a clear coat on. It’s supposed to have a somewhat rough look. Im also getting started making some 1911 grips this weekend on the CNC. Cut these this afternoon out of a nice small piece of walnut. Tomorrow my my son and his new wife are having a celebration of their marriage. They actually got married back in July while we were in the Mountains. Tomorrow we are having friends and family over to celebrate with them and to pray over their marriage and family. Not long after getting the woodworking bug I started shopping for a handsaw to give dovetails a shot. I found a lot of high price options, being a hobbyist, I couldn’t justify spending a lot of money on a new handsaw. I opted for an old Disston found at an estate sale. I learned how to sharpen on this saw and was a good user after the restoration. After this I got the idea to try building my own saw…it wasn’t pretty but it worked. I was hooked on tool making." Seems like this year has been flying by. Here we are the last weekend in September, fall is here, football season in full swing and a good time to get in the shop. So I got my digital duplicator hooked up on my CNC and ran the first test. It saves the file in a special format and you have to register the unit to get the software to be able to view the file and export it so you can ring it into VCarve. So to keep this short, it said you had to list the serial number to register it. Well I spent two days going over the piece, the box, the manual and there was no serial number. Called TS and they said it didn’t have a serial number but they would send me the software. A day later and still no software so another call to TS. They told me I had to connect the CNC to the computer via usb cable to register and then it would send me the link to the software. Well the comics in my office and the CNC is 30’ away in the shop. No usb cable that long. So I had to dissembled the computer and move it to the shop, connect it and register. By the way, they emailed me a serial number to use. So long story, I got the software and was finally this week able to see my first test. I had it to duplicate a 1911 grip as my test piece. It was the one for the other side and not the one pictured below. It took just over an hour for it to duplicate. Here red is a screen shot after I was able to import the file. I pretty nice job. I can’t wait to really put this to work and make some pieces. I have a small piece of molding I need to duplicate to repair an antique headboard. So that’s what I’ve been working on. Thanks to @Ron Dudelston for putting up the Friday post for me. I was in Talladega and not Stock car racing, but at the 26th annual Glock Sport Shooting Foundation match. A year ago was my first time to complete in this event and I was 183rd out of 253 entries. This year I made some improvements and finished 98th out of 250 entries. In some places it was hundreds of a second separating places. So I was very proud of my improvements. Now just got to move up that much more next year. It is a work in progress, but if you view the very bottom of our website, you'll see a big footer block with convenient links and soon there will be more items of convenience as well for you to use. The last footer block we had put a strain on the community, and it slowed down the viewers browsing experience, this footer is not a third party app like the last one is, this footer is part of our core software now, and will not strain assets. Been a while since I put up a Friday post due to some family and personal health issues. But I’m trying to get back in the groove today. My son thankfully has been able to keep a lot of things going in the shop with me only offering some advice at times. He has really progressed and still as all of us has things to learn. Recently he designed and built this without any input from me. A customer contacted us about a entertainment center and gave him the details. I think it turned out get and was very proud of his work from start to finish. It was to be rustic with sliding barn style doors. They were very happy with it and it looked great in place. This past week he has been working on a book case. He had it almost finished here except for the edging on the shelves. It is getting stained ebony. It was in The finishing room this morning but I forgot to get a picture. About the the only thing I worked on lately was making “X’s” for a TEDx conference for the speakers. I got a long bit for the CNC and cut these out of 2x12’s since they wanted them painted red. The bed bed on the machine is 25”x25” and they had to be 9” tall so I cut two out of each piece. I had had to make a total of 12 and get them painted red, but let the grain show. So 12 “X’s” painted red and then laser engraved with the conference name and speakers name. So that’s about it for right now in the shop. Hoping to finally get to spend some time this holiday weekend in the shop. Featured Image The shop is located in a partially renovated 1800’s barn. Renovations consisted mainly of the addition of an 1890’s base burner stove, some insulation, and patching enough holes to keep the sparrows out. John uses authentic tools whenever practical. He has a great collection of 1800s to early 1900s spoke shaves, hand drills, block planes, lathe tools, etc. When it isn’t appropriate to use an authentic tool (because of it’s fragility, value or rarity) he tries to use tools made by craftspeople like himself who make hand-made wood working tools in the traditional style. The only power tools in the shop are his lathe and the table saw, which is only used for breaking down large pieces of material so they can be managed. Source: Brighton Woodshop

My weekend Besides getting into the shop a little bit this weekend to work on my sons Cherry Desk, we also took a trip around the county with the family, me, mama and the kids all piled up in our car and headed out to the desert to consume some tasty Date Shakes, milk shakes made from dates of the palm. Our desert is full of farmers raising date palms and selling those tasty dates all over the world. We dropped by one of our favorite spots on the way home, Lake Hemet up in our local mountains and walked around talked, and just had an easy time. Our youngest daughter is heading off to the Army, I can't believe how fast time has gone by, it feels like I just never got enough time with her as she grew up so fast, I feel that way with all my kids, just not enough time, it's almost a guilty feeling inside that there is just so much more I want to do with them, but they have grown so fast. My youngest girl on my right is leaving for the Army by the end of next month, I am going to miss her dearly, my oldest girl is entering her last year of college this fall, and my boy is a big sophomore. Of course mama is behind the camera. Derek's Harlequin Table: "The case is Hard Maple from the USA. The drawer fronts are Black Walnut, figured Hard Maple, and pink Jarrah (hence the name, Harlequin). Morris is 86 yrs young today! Me and the family headed up to his place yesterday, took up a bunch of Kentucky Fried Chicken and some birthday cake and we had lunch together and he blew out the candles on his cake. He had plenty of leftovers as we planned, so he should not have to cook dinner for two nights and he's got plenty of leftover birthday cake. So to all of you, have a wonderful week ahead, and be safe in all you do! Dad and I. He's holding his own! Don't look a year over 60 if you ask me!
