Tables have been the order of business this week. We were sent a picture to build a base for a table. They already had a top they wanted to use so we got it going. Yesterday we got all the little accent pieces put on and now it is in the finishing room. it is is going to be painted and they are dropping the paint by so we can start today. Since it was being painted we used up some small pieces of wood laying around to do all the accents. While that one was being put together we started on a large Maple table top and 2” tubing base. The top was to be 48”x60”x2”. Had to do it in a couple of glue ups to keep flat and ensure good joints. After we made the last glue up to be just over 48” wide we sent a picture to the customer and they quickly decided it was too big for the room so we will be cutting it down. The Base is 2” square tubing so the shop turned to welding. Both my sons are certified welders so I left it up to them. The base is now together and the end pieces for a bench that will go with the table. A little more grinding and sanding and a primer will get sprayed this weekend and then it will be sprayed Black. The frame and bench ends will get levers drilled and inserted to protect floors. We are hopful of finishing all this over the weekend but you just never know. Saturday I’m shooting in a GSSF competition. I have had a request from @Jim from Easy Wood Tools . Our most generous sponsor, Easy Wood Tools, places a Christmas tree in their office lobby. It gets decorated with turned ornaments from their turning friends. Jim asked if the Patriot Turners could create some ornaments to help in filling up the tree. Our Patriot Turners- @Ron Altier created another beautiful ornament from colored plywood. Ron explains his process in this thread- From The Internet- Mike Peace has been posting a few short videos primarily aimed at helping the newer wood turner. One recently was on the use of dividers when turning. I found two interesting videos on bowl turning. Not so much on how to turn them but more about the end results. Most of us have been indoctrinated into the idea that the bowl blank must be dry- either at the start of the turning or at least at the time the bowl will be finished. Mike Peace demonstrates the beauty of allowing mother nature to have a hand in the process by turning a bowl start to finish with green wood. As the bowl eventually dries it will warp into shapes we can embrace. Another idea on bowl finishing is by Rick Turns. Rick uses gilding to enhance a design. As he works, Rick shows us some of the things that can go wrong. Now just for the sheer enjoyment of seeing something turned that you would probably never expect- Everything Else- In keeping with the bowl theme that we have going, I did get to finish a little flame box elder bowl I started a while back. The bowl was turned rough and then I needed to start a different project so I painted on a layer of old TiteBond II. The blank didn't warp or crack. I think the TiteBond II sealing is the way to go. The little bowl still needs a protective finish. It's about 6 inches in diameter and about 2 inches tall. Safe turning

Sitka Spruce, another spruce in the (conifers) family, often growing upwards of 200' or more, with it's very prickly foliage, this majestic tree is also a favorite of woodworkers and luthiers alike, piano sounding boards are made from Sitka as well. Sitka was also used in the early days of flight, an airplanes structure was made from Sitka. Check out our newest addition to The American Woods category. This weekend begins dove season here in Alabama so I’m planning on being in a corn field at noon Saturday for some shooting fun. Probably wont get a lot of shop work done so I’m going to the shop today for a while and help work on more of the oak tables. Two more tops are stained and about ready to be mounted to the bases. So that’s what’s happening here this weekend and in the shop, what’s on your agenda? All of us here at TPW love to hear about your projects, so share your photos and agenda with us. I had a good time endlessly wandering around the floor @ IWF. 3 of us went. One to look at software and all of us to look at banders and routers. In between I looked at lots of other interesting stuff. They estimated attendance at about 30,000. Lots of Chinese stuff, some looking better than before. For routers we kind of agreed on 3 (4) brands. For our level of work that meant a price tag of $125K to 200+. By the time a few bells and whistles were added another 20-30K. When we upgrade it will have a push off and clean feature, 18 drills, 12+ tool changer, & a C-axis. Maybe auto load & auto label. There were quite a few auto stackers on display. Price seems to have come down, some now under $100K. We can't currently justify that but they seem quite efficient. They can put away and stack for the next days production overnight all by themselves. Felder had a very interesting router for machining parts that have already been roughly cut to size. It took up a relatively small floor space and had lots of good features. Edgebanders by the zillions. Priced from 5K to 700K. Our picks ranged in price from about $120K to 175. Professional level machines with most of the whistles. We don't do large volume banding but normally about 500 to 1200 bands a day. Couldn't decide if machines that could use laser banding were worth their cost. There isn't a big enough selection of laser banding available currently. I found a supplier of molded rubber products that can make new sleeves for my Max spindle sander. Also found a supplier of silicone membranes so I could replace the one on our 5x10 press. Cost seemed reasonable at about $1500. Lots of hardware was shown. Nice to actually get to feel it rather than the catalog. Lots of lumber and veneer suppliers. Several specializing in the current rage, natural edge slabs. Looked at tooling. The best is priced that way! We still use Leuco blades and Onsrud router bits both out last the more common small shop tools by a wide margin. We just cut 80 sheets of 3/4" mdf into 2 7/16" rips. We stack cut 3 sheets at a time. Less than 10 second cycle time. We do that about every month and a half for the material distributor who sells it to someone w/o a productive saw. Anyhow Atlanta was nice, good food, nice weather, rented a nice condo for the duration of the show. Got Marta rail tickets to ride the subways where we needed to go, cheap! One of our guys was new to bigger city life and stuck to me like glue. I think he was afraid he'd get lost and not know how to find his way back. I told him about the bread crumb trick but he didn't buy it. The airport was crowded and the TSA lines we stupidly long. Anyone else make the trip?

Labor Day weekend and the beginning of College Football and lots to do. Still in the dog days of summer here, but you can tell that cooler temps are on the way and fall won't be too far off. I'm already thinking about readying the shop for winter and it's been upper 90's all week. I've been working all this week at the range so no shop time foe me, but the boys have been busy with several projects. Corn hole boards and Oak Table tops in glue up. Corn hole boards are Cherry and Maple. All of the boards we have been making are hardwoods, no plywood or MDF in these. We have been tuning them out as fast as the two of them can glue up tops and put them together. Frames cut out for the next batch. I am spraying the final finish on the Walnut/Cedar chest this morning. Hope to have it out of the finishing room and delivered this evening or tomorrow. Had a run around the "G" and had to sand it down so I can fix that. The finishing room as been so full we have been moving pieces in and out to try to finish as quickly as possible. Not sure what we would have done without this finishing room. Like everything, now I wish i had made it twice the size! So this weekend will be busy in the shop part of the time, no volleyball this weekend. I am shooting in USPSA this weekend so I have to get some reloads done and ready at some point. It seems to me like the weeks are just flying by. I sometimes wonder where the time is going. I turn around and the weekend is here again, and that's a good thing. This weekend we are readying for a show in a small town just east of us. Setting up this afternoon and going till Saturday evening. Looks like it will be hot and humid, but then what else would it be in August in Alabama. It seems the more projects we send out the door, the more that are coming in. My two sons are working hard during the week while I am at the shooting range working and then Thursday and Friday and the weekend we all hit it hard. My shop was not really built to have three people working at the same time on different projects, but we seem to be finding a way to get them done. Emptying the dust collectors keeps one person busy! So we have finished up a plain set of maple corn hole boards that will be painted white and later have the a decal of the shooting range on them to use at the range on First Saturday which is Burgers and Bullets. The boys did a nice set of Maple boards with Alabama decals for another customer. We build the boards and them put the customers decal on of their favorite team before we spray a finish. @Ron Dudelston we even had a request for a set and put a Notre Dame decal on it. Hey it they provide the decal and the money, I will put them on for them. We are also in the middle of a pretty good size job building ten 42" square Oak tables for a local church. Yesterday we got this one mostly together for our prototype so we would have all the measurements and figure out and assembly and clamping issues. Lots of rounding over to do and fitting but we are about ready to start running all the pieces. We are having fun and busy in the shop! What's on your weekend agenda? You may have heard that Easy Wood Tools ( @Jim from Easy Wood Tools )has released a new product. If you turn acrylics, you will find these cutters are just what you have been wanting. Prior to these cutters, the best acrylic cuts were made with the EWT positioned with the handle slightly raised. These new negative rake cutters eliminates that. Clean, smooth cuts with the handle flat. Ribbons of acrylic peel away effortlessly. These cutters work super on wood, too! Check out the EWT website- http://www.easywoodtools.com/ . Here's a video showing the cutters in action- Our Patriot Turners- @Cliff posted a link to a small turned scoop. This scoop is a little different in that the handle is turned so it sets at an angle. Pretty neat process. A nice discussion followed wondering if two scoops could be made from the same blank. @Ron Altier gave us a link to a video for a turned cedar vase. It really is beautiful. Some discussion followed concerning the affects of cedar sanding dust. What’s Coming Up- A gentle reminder that we are in the midst of our site raffle. I am a little late and putting the link here. It is no secret that I hate sanding and that I am terrible at it- makes sense, I guess. Mike peace put up a video on spindle sanding. He offers many great tips. I have started using the Abranet Sanding Screens, which I like but they are rather expensive. I'm sure there is a similar product at a more reasonable price. Our friends from Easy Wood Tools shared another video by Tracey Malady. This time she demonstrates the Easy Wood Hollowing tools. I don't do much vase type turning put I love my EWT straight hollower for bowl type work and even detail work on the outside of a piece. Everything Else- All of the relatives left on Sunday. I escaped to the basement to work on the little turning. I need to remember to take more process pictures. If I am going to do much acrylic work, I'll have to get a pressure pot. Harbor Freight seems to have a pretty good price on a painter's pressure pot- maybe they'll put it on sale. This is supposed to look like a wine glass that's half full. I did more sanding/polishing after these pictures so the "glass" is a little more clear. Safe turning

We have finally made it to the dog days of summer although it seems around here they started the first of June. We have been in the 90's more days than not around here. I am so thankful that I put a new AC unit int he shop this year, that baby had been working hard. Didn't get too much done in the shop last weekend with the three granddaughters here from Saturday till Monday morning. They are loads of fun, but will wear you out in 5 minutes. But this week we are working on two projects. Yep still making corn hole games and still have some on order. My youngest son, Andrew was in the shop yesterday sanding on the boards getting them ready for the finishing room. As you can see the shop is a mess but lots of work going on in there. Three of the boards are in the finishing room, two of them getting sprayed and the other waiting on him to finish the second of the pair. I love being able to move them into the finishing room and spray while they keep cutting and sanding. Just got the second coat of Sanding Seal on these two and ready to spray the finish coats on. My other son Josh, has been cutting and gluing oak boards to make some 42" square tables for a job. He has one glued that needs to be squared up and the others in sections about ready to glue together and make the top. Then we will start on the bases which will be trestle bases. While I was waiting on finish to dry I was playing with the CNC and trying out a few setting to see how they would turn out. Sorry about this picture, the glare washed out one side. I'll try to get a better picture to share. We have First Friday's show this weekend and Saturday I'll be at the range doing Burgers and Bullets as I'm the grill master. It seems here that corn hole games have become the hot item. We have been quite busy gluing up tops for the games. Today we were busy in the shop cutting and getting five tops glued and one more ready but ran out of clamps. You know you can never have too many clamps. We made a set for an Auburn fan. They furnished the stick-on decal and we applied it and then sprayed on the clear finish. I'm an Alabama fan, but I won't turn down an order from an Auburn fan. I posted a picture of the Singer Sewing Table last week, but it got sprayed over the weekend with General Finishes Enduro Var and delivered to the customer. I'm also trying to finish up a Cedar Chest with Walnut accents. Got the skirt pieces all cut and mitered just need to get them on now. Lots to do this weekend. And today I had a meeting with a wonderful 92 year old lady that wanted a set of finials for her new gate and post. She had this very nice picture showing the gate and finials. She has already had the gate built and need the finials turned. So I went by and met with her and will be getting on turning the finials in the next couple of weeks to fit the post. My two sons and I have been quite busy in the shop lately and it has been loads of fun. So what's on your agenda this July weekend? Love to hear about and see all of your projects. It seems like the dog days of summer got here early this year. Record setting heat has meant staying in the cool and I'm thankful for the AC in the shop. This week has been a busy one and will continue into the weekend. Corn hole games have been the run here lately. I guess everyone is enjoying the outside time and playing games. This set got finished and is made from Walnut, Cherry and Maple wood, no plywood in our game boards. Our customer wanted this out of several woods which seems at times to have become our signature. Not at my house with that Auburn flag in the background. So today we got pieces cut out and milled for two more sets that have been ordered. Got this jointed, planed and cut to size and glued into panels today. This weekend we will finish these. Also worked on a Quarter Sawn White Oak slab to make a table top for and old Singer Sewing machine bottom. This Slab was just over 20" wide and after running it through the dual drum sander it leveled out at 1 5/8" thick. Tomorrow we will get it sanded and moved into the finishing room for a stain and clear finish. Should be ready for delivery the first of the week. Saturday I will be at the Shooting Range part of the day as we are having SilencerCo in for a Range day. They are bringing suppressors and machine guns to shoot and demonstrate their line of suppressors. So thats my weekend, what's on your agenda this weekend? Boys at YMCA Camp Lichtman See more at https://thepatriotwoodwiki.org/Education-Research-Portal Camp 1 was used as Camp Lichtman for many years, hosting groups of African-American boys from the Twelfth Street YMCA in Washington, DC. This use resulted in a codification of local segregation practices with separate entrances for the black camps on the north side of the site and white camps on the south. However, Camp 1 provided new camping facilities laid out according to the latest ideas in recreational planning at a time when few options were available to African-American groups. By the 1960s, Camp 1 was used as co-ed and integrated Camp Goodwill by Family and Child Services of Washington, DC.
