  3. As explained to me, the ball was turned separately, then really dried, while the cup was turned with the wood extremely wet, and then the two put together(ball into wet cup). Anyone care to duplicate this??????

  5. How can you tell if they've been retempered? I assume that a tempering process can be done to them? I've tempered tool steel for plane irons before with good results. The tools are all for scraping, not so much cutting.
  6. I just purchased a "set" of 5 wood turning bowl chisels, made from files. I'm curious about how these will work for turning bowls. Any advice on the maintenance of these?
  7. Dan, you're the closest to the use of this thing. The auctioneer told me that this was used for "massaging" the body but he didn't say which part. I like your answer. Now........ how was this put together????
  8. Simple Sturbridge oil-based paints.... starting off with an antique yellow base layer, followed by a cherry/mahogany stain, and a dark green paint for the corners/drawer. The graining done with various brushes/rags.
  9. I've been going through my computer/hard drive and trying to find some of my past woodworking projects and came across this chest that I had copied from an attic room at Historic Deerfield. The first photo shows the actual chest with, I believe, cones of sugar??? I duplicated this chest but did an enlargement(2X) of it. Note the sliding lid. It received two locks and two cast iron chest lifts before going in the house.My wife uses it to store our seasonal artwork when it's not being displayed. https://www.historic-deerfield.org/

  11. I picked up this wooden object at our local auction house and was wondering if anyone can tell me the use for it? I think I know? It seems to be turned from a boxwood or hard maple wood, the ball rolls around nicely inside of the socket without falling out. It's stamped as Pratt & Lambert.
  12. Here's my construction detail of the bracket feet/moldings. This would be for a right-side or left-front foot/molding. As you can see, it's a simple method of producing molding and feet. I use this for most of my small chests and have even added a rabbet to the backside so that the chest can set down inside of that.
  13. I'm not sure of what's different about the feet? The feet/base molding are made from 1 piece of wood, except for the rear feet. The two front corners are dovetailed, then mitered at the moldings before being nailed(small square brads) to the chest. I think that I have a sample piece of molding that I can show you.
  14. I was going through my computer today, trying to organize the photos and came across these photos of a project that I had done awhile back. There's more photos somewhere but these were the ones that I can found/share. This project started with a view of a "Chippendale Bible Box" in Yale's American Furniture collection. I has some smaller pieces of walnut and though that I could use them to duplicate this chest(photo #1). Here's the results...... my only regret is that I didn't match the front board very well! Everything was hand planed down during the assembly and the dovetails are all hand cut(the only way I do it).
  15. Steven, thanks for the excellent information concerning resawing. One thing that you should do is to keep the same face of the board to the fence on all cuts, that way you have at least 1 uniformed thicknessed board to work with.
  16. Project is finished. I've got it up on a wall at about the same height that you would see it in the chapel. I've got another carving project in mind!!!
  17. Painting/gilding completed. Tomorrow, I'll attach the shell to the plaque and hang it on the wall.
  18. Thank you Cal. My technique for the smaller details is to lay down a sheet/partial sheet of leaf and then use a soft brush to "push" everything down. This is repeated as necessary to fill the details. I try to keep the "crumbs" in the applied area so that they may do some more filling in. My next step is to carefully brush/tamp down the leaf. I really don't do much rubbing, except the flat surfaces, because that will remove the leafing from the high spots.
  19. I've started to gild the shell/frame and realized that I shouldn't have given the shell a second coat of gesso. You can see the brush marks through the gold leaf..... no way to reverse this unless I wanted to strip everything away and begin again. The photos show how the gilding process goes, from laying down the gold leaf to pressing it down into the sizing. I'm doing this in stages because I'm not sure of how much gold I can lay before the sizing sets. I'll try to "burnish everything when the sizing is completely dry. The plaque is done except for some needed touchup to the paint.
  20. Here's the first coat of gesso for the plaque and the shell. I'll apply a second coat and let everything dry well before attempting the gilding.
  21. Gene, thank you for the gracious complement. Not to spoil the completion of this shell, I'll show you something similiar that I did from a 3-week trip to Spain/Portugal. The original shell was photographed, high up on a wall, in a Synagogue in Toledo, Spain. The first photo shows the gold leaf applied but not "set in". The third photo shows the gold leaf "brushed" onto the surface. The second photo shows everything completed. You can also get an idea of how the plaque/shell will go together.
  22. Everything is ready for the paint/gold leaf. The first photo shows how the shell will be displayed on the plaque and the second photo shows the materials that I'll be using for the paint/gilding. Once the yellow gesso is on, it will make the world of difference in how everything will present.
  23. The shell is just about ready for the gilding but I want to make the plaque, upon which it will be mounted. It's just a rectangular shape with applied moldings. The moldings will be gilded. I've used a ogee w/fillet and a 3/16"beading plane for the moldings. It always surprises me what amount of shavings the planes will produce. This pile is for about 10 feet of molding(I always make extra).
