Grandpadave52 reacted to Smallpatch in Sink and commode should be the first thing on a list for a new shop.
Probably the biggest time saver of anything for the water being that close.
These bottles are still with me since we built this shop in 1999 and just think of all the steps and time I saved over those years and finally put in a sink and a potty in the newest shop... sink runs out to water a large honey suckle next to shop but did run the potty to the septic system which I put in all by myself... And I understand lots of states is charging lots bucks for things a home owner could do much cheaper.. But this is the third shop I have personally built and every time I started on another I did have a list of wanted thing  to save me time and make life easier, and for next time if there ever is a next time....I put the forms up and had a cement smarty pour me good smooth slabs and I did the rest.  Well, wife was there to hold the sheet iron in the right place while putting the screws in it.
Yes, I have started another list of important things that would help like electricity coming out of the floor for machines in the middle of the shop and yes in the ground dust extractor pipes with screw in lids if any was not needed at any time. This list is if we ever move but I don't think the old folks homes allows anything like that.
And the most important item I bought to use building this last shop was a self levelling laser level. The first shop and no level of any kind so I used telephone poles. Think about it.. The first time I asked telephones poles to help me and son in law install fence post around the four acres for Fun City was in 1982. Almost any time a person needs something for referencing straight up
and down for every one can see a few telephone poles. Well maybe not in down town New York City but I doubt if anyone there knows trees produce wood as a by product.
No level at all for I didn't even own one at that time in 1982 but I did have a 6 inch bubble level for the wood forms and that was used for all three shops.
See how clean the tips of the glue bottles look. This lets a person open one anytime without kussing or throwing a screw driver across the shop.

My old rat tail file (inherited from an uncle) appears to be too worn out for making a groove around a metal bolt.  Just ordered a set of 5mm diamond coated round files from Amazon.  Pondering how I might make a jig to control the file's position and depth of cut over (or under or beside) a spinning bolt shaft.  A couple ideas popped into my head just as I was writing this.  Guess I'll go play in the garage to see what I can rig/jig up.

Things have changed a bit around here. I used to get out to do the yard clean up every spring. This is the first time I've had to hire someone to do it for me. I can move about, but my balance isn't that great, and I have to use a walker when I go outside. That doesn't work very well when walking on the grass. Hoping I can at least mow the lawn this summer with my lawn tractor. Depending on someone else is not fun.

I'm identifying as a slug today after the past 3 days. The Buick Enclave is begging for a rest too. Monday left home about 7A, ~18 minute drive to daughter/SILs to supervise grandsons on the first day of their spring break. Got back home about 5:30P.

Tuesday up early, get ready for the marathon trip to Southern Illinois for visitation, then funeral of pastor's mother. Left home about 9:15A, EST. Drive wasn't too bad except for the insane winds and occasional rain. I was white knuckled most of the way especially while on I-70 W. There must be 4 semis for every car on I-70. Felt bad for those driving box trailers...they were struggling to keep them in their lanes. Made one stop for personal business.

Arrived at the funeral home ~11:15A, CST. Visitation 11A-NOON; Funeral at NOON. Left the funeral home ~12:50 CST (1:50 EST) for the return trip. At least it was mostly sunny on the drive home but the wind was still a challenge. One stop to walk & stretch, personal business, a Casey's, iced mocha and oh yeah a couple Casey's iced donuts. Arrived home ~5P, EST.  Whew. Longest time I've spent in a vehicle since well before back surgery. At the height of the journey I was much closer to St. Louis than home.

Aside from the purpose of the trip and the insane wind, an enjoyable trip. I'd forgotten about all the small oil wells scattered about in that region.; saw several dozen with maybe 25-30% pumping with others either static or obviously abandoned. I also was surprised seeing several fields already planted, assume corn vs soybeans.

Finally, yesterday, out by 10A, first stop to replenish Buick go juice, several errands, drive to the next county for auction item pick-up. A quick stop at Casey's for personal business and since I was there, an iced mocha and oh what the hey, a couple iced donuts, back to the home area, a few more stops.

Then home, unload some stuff, a few domestic tasks, then on the road again to daughters for oldest grandsons 13th birthday celebration. SIL did steaks on the grill...no cake, no donuts, but my wife made two apple pies at the request of my grandson. Got home about 9:30 last night.

To end this saga, just ate donut #2 from yesterday's trip with coffee #2 for today. May wander out to the garage later...or not.

This is what the Legacy Ornamental Lathe can do plus many other great processes.
Are you and the lady of the house through going down every road in America yet..... That reminds me there is a retired couple who has taken a picture of every post office in Texas and every town that has no post office. This was in a believe it or not mag a few years ago....I think we have been to almost all the National parks but never took a picture in any of them???? This must have been before cameras came to town so no proof.

Thanks Patch. That creation was born out of necessity as both a mental and physical healing from my unexpected back surgery right at 3 years ago now. It's still my go to method for shaking rattle cans with arthritis aggravating my shoulders.

When I was a junior and senior in high school, I had a part-time job with our local J.C. Penny store. I worked in the warehouse/ storeroom (upstairs level). Part of the job included cleaning, organizing maintaining the various stockrooms on the main sales level. One night I was assigned to the Hardware Department storeroom to reorganize.

The department manager, all spiffed up in his suit and tie was working the floor that night. First off, he was a jerk who had little man syndrome. He always treated me disrespectful since "I was just a high school kid" but treated his staff pretty much the same way. He knew more than anybody or at least thought he did when in fact he didn't know a garden rake from a toilet plunger.

Anyways, that night he had a customer that wanted a custom color of latex paint mixed; gallon size. Well he mixed it, took it to the shaker (an electric version of your air powered) which was just at the entrance of the store room. Pretty soon, I hear cussing and yelling for me to get there immediately. To my amazement I found him and the area covered with a sorta beige paint. Obviously Mr. Hardware genius had not secured the lid before firing up the shaker. I was ORDERED to clean up the mess. While not a desirable job, the most enjoyable moment of my J.C. Penny career; worth every second. He of course disappeared...I assume to go to the men's department to procure a new suit. Not long after, he "transferred" to another store.

Took nearly all day yesterday, but finally made it to 42° with sun all afternoon. Wind wasn't too bad since it was in the 15-20mph range, so only half of what it has been.

8:55A, EST. Today's episode of Can You Guess the Weather? Our first contestant was 23° starting out, covered by frost, but failed to advance with nearly no wind.

Our next contestant advanced the temperature all the way to 29° with clear sunny sky left by contestant #1, but failed to advance loosing all the sunshine to full cloud cover.

Our final contestant boasts, we'll see him,  her or (insert pronoun here) advance the temperature all the way to 59°, nix the frost by bringing back full sun, only have light winds, BUT, likely attain a Very High Pollen Alert.

Tune in tomorrow for the next exciting episode of "So You Want To Be A Weatherman or woman or (insert pronoun here)?"

Giving up on using brass.  Should have remembered from my previous attempt to CNC brass to make a push button depth stop for my drill press that brass has it out for me.
Next strategy that woke me up today will be to see if I can file a shallow groove around a metal bolt shaft using my variable speed lathe.  Then go back to using a binding bolt to trap the pivot bolt once inserted but let it spin if it wants/needs to.
If I had access to the fab lab I retired from teaching in I would use their metal lathe and likely would have already finished this project using that idea.
