steven newman got a reaction from Cal for a gallery album, Just a Tool Chest
Was getting too much sitting around from Yard Sales....Since I did have a nice supply of Ash 1 x 6s Thought I could build a chest to hide all the stuff in, including any more that MIGHT wander in...goal was to have it done before the Labor Day Weekend gets here.

Lots of Dovetails were used...both to join the case, and build 5 drawers.   back of the case is 1/4" pine plywood.   I think there MIGHT be a Build-along thread somewhere?  Dark brown stain, due to it using an old Walnut Coffee Table as a base.  Coat of Amber Shellac followed that, then a coat of clear gloss poly.

Bright hardware...as the clunky "Olde Brass" stuff got vetoed.   A locking bar was cobbled up, along with lockable latches for the lid....Padlocks (3) all use the same key..
A length of black chain to keep the lid from tilting too far back...Lid uses a Piano type of hinge.

Just under a month of puttering around in the shop..

steven newman got a reaction from lew for a gallery album, Spokeshave case, from scrap wood
Still had some Ash leftovers from the last project...and a lot of 3/4" x 3/4" sticks...so I made a box, used a Frame & Panel design....with Tongue & Groove corner joints..

Wasn't enough room for grooves for the bottom panel..so it is sitting on a mitered frame glued around the bottom of the box.  Then a rack was made from Pine scraps...to hold my 4 spokeshaves.  added what was left of that black chain to limit how far back the lid will lean.   Simple latch the close the lid, which has Brass hinges.

No stain, just 3 coats of Amber Shellac, followed by 3 coats of clear gloss varnish.  stands 5-1/2" tall x 7-1/4" x 12-3/8"...even has a name brand on the lid..

Replaced a basket that was always falling down.    3/8" thick Ash, resawn....was then finger jointed at the corners so the grain would wrap around.   Door is a book-matched glue up..with a finger lift..and a"Silver" Key.....inside is an Ash bar with 4 brass cup hooks.   Down at the bottom is a box for all them "orphaned" keys nobody remember what they go to....

Hobby Lobby hinges, and a Magnetic latch....mounted to the wall with a pair of screws, with washers.
Stained and 2 coats of varnish....

Silver key was scroll sawn from 1/4" thick ash, then given a few coats of rattle-can Silver paint
    Thanks for looking in..

steven newman got a reaction from JimM for a gallery album, Cutting board of scraps
Decided to use up a bunch of scraps,  mainly strips that were ripped off to make a board the right width...cut them to about 12"...anything shorter was tossed into the burn pile can.....Then glue things up into a panel....clean it up, square it up, round the corners and edges....a couple of coats of mineral oilas a finish.    Scrap pile is smaller, and have a cutting board for the Kitchen...5/8" x 10-1/4" x 11".  No real pattern, just what seemed to look best....Thanks for looking in...

Having won a second one of these Combination Planes, thought it only fitting to build a case to store it in.   1/2" thick Pine boards were cobbled up into a box and a lid.   Some brass hardware  was added to the lid.  had to print out a set of labels, even had to hand colour one.   Stain is by Minwax, called "Gunstock"   there are 2 coats of clear gloss poly.   Corner joints are 1/4" box/finger joints, hand cut.   Stands 7" tall, by 11" long, by 6" wide.

Frame & Raised Panel chest, lid is a 4 board glue-up with bread board ends.   Has a small "Stash box" inside, on the left side...raise it's lid and it props the main lid open.    Floor of the chest has 1/4" Aromatic Red Cedar planks glue to a floor of 1/4" plywood, that is glued and screwed to 1 x 2 cleats.   Finish is called Early American by Minwax.   2 coats of a clear gloss poly, with a glaze of the stain in-between.  Brass hinges, and Black metal handles on the ends.   Stands 24" tall ( with the 17" wide lid closed) and the lid is 28-1/2" long.   Annual Christmas present gift.

    Lumber was 3/4" x 6" x (average length) 6'....

Had a stash of older chisels, that needed a better home than just a dank & dusty old drawer to rattle around in.   Still had a bit of 1/2" Poplar, and a bit of 1/4" Luann plywood....
Through dovetails on the corners, hand cut
Grooves to house the plywood panels, ploughed with the Stanley 45
Top edge of the lid, rounded over with a block plane and a couple chisels
Lid was handsawn off of the box, after the box was glued up
    Hardware from Hobby Lobby
    Gunstock oil stain
    Clear Gloss Poly top coat.
Dividers are pine scraps glued in place.
Lid is padded to prevent any rattles...

1/2" thick "Project boards" out of Poplar, hand cut through Dovetails, 2 x 2 Poplar Racks to hold the Taps and Dies.   Lid blank had 1" wide strips sawn from all 4 edges, folded down to make a lip for the lid.
Gunstock is what the "flavour" of the stain is..single coat of clear gloss poly on that when it was dry...
    Hardware was from Hobby Lobby.

Bunch of Ash and pine scraps, and a few pieces of plywood....resaw the solid wood.  Build 6 drawers, then a case to house them...with an "attic" above...add a lid.   Lots of glue-ups, LOTS of dados and rebates.

Antique brass plated hardware.  Minwax "Gunstock" stain, and one coat of Clear Gloss Poly.   Add a foam pad for the floor of the "attic", add a chain for the lid, and something to hold a label with...should be easy enough?

Ash scraps, resawn down....will be a "Tool Chest" at a catch-all spot in the Dining room....sitting on the sideboard.  Finger/Box joints used everywhere.  About the only "Store-bought" items for the build were some hinges, and the small knobs

Stands 6-1/2" tall, 1/4" thick lid is 8" x 12-1/2" over the bread board ends.   Thanks for looking in!

steven newman got a reaction from Gunny for a gallery album, Shaker Style Table, with drawer
Made from leftover Ash boards.   Tried to line up the grain in the top, drawer front, sides so they wrap around, legs are tapered on two inside faces.  Keeping with the "Leftovers", the handle was also a leftover.

Top is 3/4"  x 14" x 25" counting bread board ends. Table stands 23" tall.   Drawer used half blind dovetails in the front, and dados for the back.  Stain is called Gunstock, seems to go nicely with the Ash.

Seems that in Paul Sellers Master Class W.W. series...he made a Desk Top Organizer....so..I downloaded the plans, and made my version out of Ash....with a few of my own details added in.   Dovetailed corners, dovetailed drawer...Roundovers down with a #3 Bench plane.  # 78 rebate plane helped out on the lid.   Stanley 45 made grooves, where Sellers didn't...

Added steel tacks as feet.  Stain is Gunstock.  One coat of clear gloss poly.   Added a handle for the drawer.

Fancy grained White oak.   The Boss thought about buying a FlatPack thingy....figured I could build one a lot better.  Weathered Oak Stain, then a couple coats of Amber Shellac....a 10 day build.
