    For all you guys

I think this is fitting for just about anyone here. Carved from an oddball piece of 16 x 10 cut off aspen.

    Box

I made a new miter sled for my table saw and it turned out good. When I was testing it, I used some old scraps from my last projects. I looked it over and thought, "thats beautiful wood, what can I make out of it." I laminated some of the Canary wood and added some other scraps, I think Bubinga. I sat it on the kitchen table and my daughter stopped by for a visit. Yep, you know what happened to it

  8. Hi guys, I know it's nearly midweek already, but i wanted to let you know that i am actually turning things again, and as soon as I can figure out a way to get the picture from my phone, to here, I'll show you what I am working on. It's another throw top, made from maple and Osage I believe. I am going to be making more of them, especially since we recently lost the one person that i had contact with that made them originally and encouraged me to make them, Judy Kingery. She gave me a lot of support and inspiration on turning in general, and she will certainly be missed. Have a great week everyone...

    PIP River Table

Everything made the trip without a hitch. The glass was wrapped in two blankets then sandwiched between two pieces of shelving material and all secured with packing tape. It rode on the truck's back seat floor board. The table rode upside down on a cushion of carpet, surrounded by 1 1/2" foam in the bed of the truck. The family was very happy. The table is at home in the family room on a white tiled floor. Looks good. Both son and wife are very presnickity. No sign needed.

    Soon to be retired guy

Was digging around the ol internet today looking for some ideas and what do I find. This place. Well I’m a guy getting back into the wood working after a little break while in the Navy. Come February 2019 I will be officially retired after 21 years of Naval service. So hopefully I will find inspiration and good people here. Just built a Cnc and learning the way around this beast. Who knows maybe I can make a living making stuff and never have to go back to the real world jobs where I can get fired. Hahahah we can all dream.

    Newest Bowl

Here is my latest effort. This is the bowl that was in work when I posted the pictures of the curtain and dust trough on my lathe. Top and bottom are poplar, center is walnut. I wanted to try my hand at mixing species. I don't really like this one, the proportions look wrong to me. My son and DIL like it, so it's theirs now.

    Next Project?

Well, last night, went a cut a couple dozen plugs. . Might be enough? Got out the tools to install these things.. Screwdriver to "pop" the plugs out. Hammer to set the plugs into the holes, and drive the chisel. Plane and chisel to trim the plugs flush, once the glue is set. When I pop the plug out, I grab the fat end, line up the plug's grain with my thumb. Coat the narrow end with a bit of glue, and drive the plug in as far as it will go. Trying to match the grain directions. Worked my way down the case, even had to tip the case back, so I could reach the bottom holes.. Had just enough plugs, too.. Will let this sit a while, cleaned off the bench.. And hauled two of the 1 x 10s to the shop.. Hmmmm, top one was the "better looking" of the two...6' long, made a cut at the 3' mark.. And set these two aside. Will be the sides of the bookcase. Went with 1 x 10s, no glue-ups needed to get them wide enough... As for that other wood shaped object...Cut it into three pieces..23" long. You'd think that since they all came from the same board, they would be the same size? Nope. Ganged the 3 into a block..jointed one edge.. Saws weren't working to well ( maybe operator?) so I had to plane the ends straight, as well. Not perfect, but the sliding dovetail cuts will take care of that. Left this mess sit, still clamped up, hoping it pulls the warp out... Ok, messed around long enough with these, glue had set up, time to trim things to size.. The "trimmers" Used the chisel bevel down, one whack with the hammer..waste flies off.. If I use the chisel bevel up, it tends to dig in a bit.....Popped all the plugs off, then came back with the block plane and leveled things out.. Will need to come back with a chisel, and clean up the beads a bit..Drawer was sliding a bit too far into the case. Added a screw to the back of each drawer side. NOW I can adjust how far in the drawer will slide... Will let this set, while I build a bookcase for the upper unit...BTW.. "What plugs?" Stopped for the day..shakes were back. Waiting on a call from a Brain Doctor to see when I can get in. No tumours, but there is a couple spots in there they don't like...will see what they want to do..

Pretty good day I'd say. Really beginning to take shape. Sorry to hear symptoms have returned. Just curious, have you been checked for diabetes? While I'm considered pre-diabetic, I know if I don't eat or eat properly during the day, I can get pretty shaky late afternoon. Just a thought. Prayers & thoughts for good news!

I've seen them used for tool surveys and favorite methods of something in other forums. But that's why I was asking (to get perspectives on possible dates.

  31. Another thing I'll pass on....You might aught to check the price of the conveyor belt then you will know why I cut a piece of 1/4" BB to keep the belt covered anytime the machine is not being used... Someone was mixing paint or stain on my sander and somehow some got knocked over and didn't tell me. I blame it on the cat. That little flat area is a premium in my shop.

  34. The tag on the old motor should show the direction of rotation, rpm's, hp,. Be sure to measure the shaft with calipers in both Metric and Imperial, the motor base size is usually called out on the tag for the bolt hole arrangement. Might want to take a picture on your phone of the name plate to show to the guy behind the counter. Herb

    Next Project?

MRI today....ruined a Monday afternoon...still have a huge headache...waiting for word on how the scan went... A few toys were used.. Clamped the drawer in the vise, and trimmed the dovetails. Laid the drawer on it's top..marked a line to show the middle of the back board. Used a large square to mark this...then a few screws.. One in the center, and one halfway to each side....groove will hold the edges. I don't trust nails... Ok, how do you make a knot...vanish? Well, I drilled a hole, right through the center of the knot...then a bolt and some glue.. Right before this knob was installed..I transferred the location to the other end of the drawer, so both knobs are the same.. Starting to think a coat of Golden Oak, and a couple coats of shellac...might dress this up.. Need to take this over to the drill press.. THIS one. Not much good for anything else..might as well make the plugs from this.. Cuts a 3/8" tapered plug. Maybe tomorrow, if the head feels better...I can cut a bunch of plugs, and install them. Stay tuned..

  38. That lathe looks like it would be a workout just to do one item. Got a busy week ahead. Put lacquer on several items I have been working on. Tomorrow will go to Stew Pot to serve lunch and then in PM to see dentist to get crown installed. Wednesday will go to set up boot at artisan marketplace an in PM security duty at church. Work at drugstore Thursday and I am already tired just typing it in.

Of course I believe it was Abe Lincoln that said you can’t believe everything you see on the internet. LOL On a serious note I would love to follow the progress of the violin if you choose to accept the challenge. To my inexperienced eyes, this would seem a project that transcends woodworking.
