Those are ingenious, something I have always been interested in, violin building. I read a book about the differing styles of violins, the book is called "The Art of Violin Making" and I learned about the makers and how their styles differed and why. What a neat book. I think this was it, it was borrowed and I had to return it, but it was full of wonderful pictures and great reading.

It can be addictive. Getting up at 1:00am to check on a glue job, removing clamps, shaving a tiny bit of wood, gluing on another tiny piece here or there, clamping ... Another 12 minutes in the life of a restoration.

I'd recommend getting an old fiddle in pieces or whole but cracked. $50-$200. 1890-1915 is the sweet spot but no newer than 1960s. Nothing that has been sanded down to white wood or refinished. If you can spot touchups and repairs, stay clear.

Stare at it for a few months, slowly begin disassembling it with a very thin shark knife or three. Examine everything, fit the cracks, fit new pieces as needed. Make everything fit together with 100% contact - NEVER tightly wedged together, but full-contact between hide-glue surfaces. Eighty pounds are pulling between the nut and the saddle, and every square millimeter counts for tone and structure.

This is what you are looking for. This one is mid-1800s & cost me $50 + $50 shipping . . .
