Fred W. Hargis Jr 29,259 Posted December 15, 2018 Report Share I love that table, somewhere my wife caught a pic of one and mentioned to me how much she would like to have one. I threw out that copy of the mag, so I may have to wing it if I build one...sure hope it's as nice as that if I do it. Gunny 1 Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 61,980 Posted December 15, 2018 Report Share Thanks, Fred. It's a pretty easy build. Any questions, just holler. Gunny 1 Quote Link to comment
John Morris 35,673 Posted December 16, 2018 Report Share Absolutely perfection to the nth degree Gene, wow! The grain, the color, the work, it all flows together so well, this is one of thee nicest river tables I have ever seen, no kidding. Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 61,980 Posted December 16, 2018 Report Share @John Morris, I was lucky enough to find that huge mesquite slab. It's the wood that makes it, the build was simple. Like the builder. Quote Link to comment
John Morris 35,673 Posted December 16, 2018 Report Share Where do you get those slabs Gene? Local or mail order? Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 61,980 Posted December 16, 2018 Report Share Local...well about 100 miles or so, south. In Casa Grande. The sawyer salvages from anywhere they're clearing for development, roads etc. He also salvages from pecan and pistachio orchards. That particular slab was about 11' long and 3" thick. I bought it for $20. Quote Link to comment

John Morris 35,673 Posted December 16, 2018 Report Share By the way Gene, you went with glass? I thought you were the one working on the resin river type? Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 61,980 Posted December 16, 2018 (edited) Report Share @John Morris I do a lot of resin for inlays AKA, repairs in mesquite. But, not much big stuff. I went with glass because it was simpler. NOT cheaper, though. Edited December 16, 2018 by Gene Howe Quote Link to comment
Mattb0313 17 Posted December 17, 2018 Report Share Gene, what resin do you use, and where do you get it? TIA Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 61,980 Posted December 17, 2018 Report Share Matt, I've used a lot of different epoxys. My favorite is System 3 from these guys. Quote Link to comment
Grandpadave52 50,149 Posted December 18, 2018 Report Share Gorgeous table Gene. That slab of mesquite has some beautiful grain. Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 61,980 Posted December 18, 2018 Report Share Thanks, Dave. IMHO, all mesquite has that gorgeous grain. It's understandable considering it's slow growth and harsh conditions. Quote Link to comment
1fizgig 937 Posted August 7, 2019 Report Share That's a nice piece of work Gene. I'd love to give resin a crack, but it seems prohibitively expensive without supervision to get it right. Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 61,980 Posted August 7, 2019 (edited) Report Share Thanks, Fiz. But, that river is glass. A lot simpler than epoxy. Edited August 7, 2019 by Gene Howe Quote Link to comment
FlGatorwood 14,475 Posted August 7, 2019 Report Share Kudos. I thought I had posted on this before but I don't see it. I love it as others have so well said and explained. Quote Link to comment
junglejohn 349 Posted August 22, 2020 Report Share I call myself a wood worker then I see something like this. Absolute perfection. I am not worthy. I am not worthy. Gene Howe, Cal and Gunny 2 1 Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 61,980 Posted August 23, 2020 Report Share Thanks, John. It wasn't that difficult. The slab sorta dictated the design. The build was pretty basic. Cal and Gunny 2 Quote Link to comment
Ron Altier 9,603 Posted October 23, 2020 Report Share Gene, I saw a video on this table (or one just about like it) on Youtube some time ago. If you do some searching you can probably find it too Quote Link to comment
