I decided to try something I been wanting to do for some time and try the box/dovetails joinery system built into the Shaper Origin. No computer work required. It’s all done with onboard software. In keeping with their history the guys at SO made it quick and simple. Had the operator read the instructions a little more completely it would have come out even better. Kind of weird though. Every time one of these advances occurs I think it takes us a little further from the actual art of woodworking. My grandfather was a lot like Steve in that there were very few power tools involved and IMO so much closer to the wood and the art of it all. The issue would be the cutting length of the bit but they make 1/8” bits with 1” cutting length so that would be possible. The cutting length would determine the thickness of the wood you could use. Paul I have a jig that will do finger joints on TS, yes 1/8 or less. Bought it about 25 years ago and never used . It even came with a video. Planned to do boxes but never got around to it. Fortunately small CNCs got to my wallet first and they keep reminding me that they can cut box joints, or dovetail joints, or just about whatever kind of joint I can imagine for only twice the price of that SO. Before I modified my CNC so I could clamp boards vertically we used a simple fixture on a router table to show our students how to make box joint: https://4dfurniture.blogspot.com/2022/04/a-simple-finger-joint-jig-for-router.html. Of course it takes some room in a shop for a CNC, even for a small one while the SO can be used wherever you have some bench space.
