Popular Post RustyFN
Working on a vase for my wife. I started with a piece of cherry 6” by 6” by 12” long. I think I will need to build a steady rest to hollow it. lew, Fred W. Hargis Jr, p_toad and 5 others

Popular Post Gerald
When I started deep hollowing I tried steady rests but it was such a pain moving it and setting up. I finally learned to turn without it. This does take time and the right equipment to get there. However 12 inch deep is ambitious, Good Luck. Oh and remember small cuts, even with support it is more effective . Think you nailed the shape. lew
That's gonna be a beauty, Rusty! I'm really liking the steady rest I built from Alan Stratton's idea. I can attach/remove it without having to move the tailstock or remove the turning. Woodman, RustyFN, Cal and 1 other

We had a demo at our last club meeting where one of the guys makes a two part vase and puts it back together after he hollows it with a box joint. It was very interesting. lew, Woodman and Cal

knockonit
boy howdy, love cherry, one of my favorite species. I'm just learning to get back at the lathe, i'm slow to remember sharpening and my biggest let down is the actual turning getting tool marks out so i don't have to be come a full time sand man, figure with more lathe time i'll work thru it, sure do enjoy watching a skilful turner pull a piece to gether, thanks for sharing rj in az RustyFN, lew and Woodman

Thanks for the pictures! Did you acquire the blank ready-to-work? Or did this come from a tree known to you? Kiln-dried? Or 'perfectly aged' (like me)? I'm looking at the ring pattern - would this have been near a major intersection of branch to trunk? RustyFN

This was part of a 6” by 6” by 8’ piece I bought from a guy that has a bandsaw mill. It was wet. lew and Woodman 1
