Bundoman
I have been painfully delinquent from here the last while and have missed the talks. 2021 brought real challenges and changes but I am still out here and “kicking!” Hope to be more active in 2022. Here are some of the couple hundred Snowmen I made for the Christmas season, a few of the Vikings and “Gnomen” I have been dabbling in the winter, and my daughters first attempt at the wood lathe which happened last Sunday afternoon. She has been asking to give turning a try and her and I spent a couple hours at the lathe together. I am still learning technique so hope I am not sending her too far astray. The honey dipper and bullet are hers. I only helped with a few cleanup cuts to smooth a few things out for her. She wants to learn to make ornaments and other smaller things so I suspect I will get more of these sessions. I am sort of watching for an economical mini or midi lathe to cram in the shop so I can set her up with her own work station. She is showing potential and interest right now and want 5o nurture that interest while I can. Proud dad moment for me. lew, FlGatorwood, Gerald and 1 other

Popular Post FlGatorwood
That is awesome to get a teenager to have some interest in woodworking and get pried from all the electrical gadgets to take action. This is wonderful. The posted turnings are extraordinary. I really love them all but favor the vikings. Great job on all accounts. I resemble all that's quoted above. Awesome creations on your part. Very well done. And, how great it is to see your daughter has caught "the bug" too. She's already turning (no pun intended) out projects that far exceed my ability at a wood lathe. Hope to see more of both your work here!! Popular Post Bundoman
A follow up on my post about my daughters interest in turning. I said I was watching for a lathe and I found this one last week on an online estate auction. I bid on it and the rest is history. It is a 1972 vintage Rockwell 42-111 and is overall quite nice and complete aside from perhaps needing the bearings freshened. The lathe was to be picked up a a few hours away and close to some family so I stretched one of my own rules last Friday and “broke her out of school.” Her and I took the road trip to spend the day with my dad and brother and to pick up her new lathe. In the pictures, it is without its spindle. I pulled it to change the bearings and new ones are on the way. It cleaned up easily and I hope to set her up with variable speed in the form of a DC motor from a treadmill provided I can get the control and the wiring all figured out. It has step pulleys that will suffice but VS may be a bit nicer for her. It isn’t the biggest or fanciest but she is excited and I think it will serve as a good starter machine for her. The spindle and tail stock are MT2 and the spindle is 1 inch x 8 tpi so accessories shouldn’t be too tough to find. I hope her interest in turning will continue to grow and obviously am trying to encourage her as much as possible. I have some Craftsman tools that should be OK to get her started and she has a lot of ideas for ornaments and things that she wants to try between centers. I hope to add a chuck for her in time. Not quite a turning project, and yet, kind of a turning project, I suppose. Just wanted to share. Popular Post Grandpadave52
Nice score!! For "old school technology" one of the best around. They truly don't make them like that anymore. Plenty of parts & accessories can be found for them as well. Ya' did good Brent...real good! BTW, you're a pretty good dad too. Looking forward to seeing her begin turning out projects on "her" lathe. LarryS, Gunny, Fred W. Hargis Jr and 4 others

Popular Post HandyDan
I have a 46-111 in my arsenal. Turned on it for many years and still do if I turn longer spindles than my 46-460 Delta Midi lathe will handle. The Craftsman tools are just fine too. They are a good grade of HSS, easy to sharpen on a belt sander, hold their edge wekll and are still my go to tools today. I like the spindle gouges for their shallowness which makes them good for turning beads into sharp corners without catches. You have set her up well for learning. Kudos to both of you. If you are changing the bearings because they were a bit noisy don't be surprised if the new ones are just as noisy. Just seems like an inherent trait of that lathe.
