Popular Post lew Posted September 3, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted September 3, 2020 Geeze, September already! Pretty busy week here for our Patriot turners Our Patriot Turners- @Smallpatch posted this in another forum but it directly applies to everyone turner here. THINK SAFETY!!! @PatriotWoodturning showed us some of the beautiful bowls he has turned- Check out his posts to see more of his fantastic work! And speaking of bowls, @PatriotWoodturning gave us a look at his method of drying his bowl blanks. Our turners added their thoughts to his post- @Gerald is working on a gorgeous natural edge vessel. Gerald shows us what he started with and a little about the project. Our members had some questions about the finish and Gerald provided his thoughts. @Gunny added a practical project, he turned, to last week's "Wednesday's..." Always nice when you can make something better than the original. @AndrewB turned a small gobblet from a glued up blank. What made this different was Andrew uses a pen mandrel to hold the piece. Andrew included a couple of videos to document his progress. Our turners were not sure this was the best way to hold the work. You can check out their responses in Andrew's post. @AndrewB also showed us his birch bowl project. Andrew includes a progress video in his post Several members offered advice on getting a smooth surface to reduce the need for aggressive sanding. What’s Coming Up- Just a reminder that the Worldwide Woodturners Symposium is less than 3 weeks away. There is an extensive list of demonstrators/topic for this event. Click on the above image for the link to all of the events information and registration. The folks from Highland Woodworking are offering online courses. How about learning to turn a platter? Registration is at- https://rocknchairman.com/store/Turning-Platters-with-a-Plan-p223503245/ For The Newbies- I found this video in last weeks list of Rick Turns YouTube videos. Pretty good explanation of using the bowl gouge and reducing tearout. I really have difficulty when it comes to turning things that have a pleasing shape. Creating something that doesn't remind me of a neanderthal rock bowl is my achilles heel. Ernie Conover put together a short video showing various bowl shapes as an aid to developing an eye for more desirable pieces. Expand Your Horizons- Our buddy Tim Yoder is really turning THIN! He explains how it's done in this video- Holding your work on the lathe sometimes requires some imagination. Mike Peace explains the use of jam chucks and friction chucks- New Turning Items- Using an electric drill for lathe sanding is OK but sometime it just doesn't permit access to every angle. The drills can be heavy and tiresome to use. I just ordered one of these and looking forward to trying it out. From Woodturners Wonders- Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube videos from last week- A short video about woodturning and anxiety. I know it helps me with some of my demons- Safe turning and stay well Larry Buskirk, FlGatorwood, Gunny and 2 others 3 2 Quote

Now if I could just get on this program of 5 days pay for 2 days work so I can have 5 days to work in shop all would be great. Great post @lew lots of stuff happening lately. p_toad, FlGatorwood and Larry Buskirk 1 2 Quote

AndrewB Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 It being Saturday and all I was feeling a bit destructive. Being IRRITATED overly and over looked my situation with the carbide tips... Took @Gerald's suggestion on the tips being brittle I should have realized that to begin with. Welp from my forging days I took me good old 3 pound blacksmithing hammer to the carbide tips and success broke them off and got the screws out. NO PROBLEM MAN. Easy peasy. Either way the tool steel took a bit of a beating but I recon both my rougher and hollower will still be working fine. Welp lol maybe I should have held off on ordering a second one oh well its on the way so I have a spare in case of a drastic emergancy. Either way # ADDICTED TO EWT tools HAHAHA cant help me self with that. They just work so well with the woods. Now only if I could spin metal on me wood lathe now that would make for some fun. I actually feel a heck of a lot better and relieved now. Ah yea and me concrete took a bit of a hit but no big deal there. Fresh new tips in both tools. Yep now you guys can say WE TOLD YA SO. LOL LOL p_toad and FlGatorwood 2 Quote
lew Posted September 5, 2020 Author Report Posted September 5, 2020 Jim from Easy Wood Tools would have repaired it for free! FlGatorwood 1 Quote

FlGatorwood Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 @lew, thank you for a great post and all the information. I enjoyed the video with Kent on turning regarding hills and grains. I have no plans to turn bowls. Our turning section has been very busy and it is good to see. I have the bug to turn some now, but no time as I am helping the grandchildren with their virtual learning. Nothing like seeing them get up and independent with the abilities they need to survive. lew Posted September 5, 2020 Author Report Posted September 5, 2020 @FlGatorwood Thank You! I feel bad for the kids and their families having to struggle with the virtual learning. When done right, it can work but unfortunately too many schools systems failed to prepare their teachers and IT staff and to make the necessary tools available to everyone. FlGatorwood 1 Quote
FlGatorwood Posted September 6, 2020 Report Posted September 6, 2020 The first few days, we did have the learning curve of virtual learning. The children don't have the distractions of the classroom. They mute their mikes, press a button to raise their hands, the teacher can see if the child is playing or paying attention. One teacher forgot to present the information a few times, but this is new. That one teacher is a real teacher presenting the material in a few ways and then asking all at home if anyone has a problem with the information. Our grandson could not get into his coding class. We called the school and they began to bellow about him missing classes. So they were informed that he had been trying to get into the class but no one showed. So, they investigated and realized that they had sent him the wrong link. So, that is corrected. He is 8th grade and taking high school classes and will be credited with such. Everything is easy for him and often he can tell the teacher what is not connected. We had a few glitches in our broadband service which is also our phone service provided by Cox Communications. They kept slowing us down. They know that we are home schooling. Thankfully, my neighbor is the project manager for such and he got onto the folks for not providing him service, so we benefited. It will have bumps, but overall, I think that they are getting a good education according to Florida law. However, I have little confidence in Florida schooling. I went through school in Tennessee and the folks here in Florida never had the information that we had. Of course, folks here talk better than they do in Tennessee. LOL The only real problem is that sometimes I have to step in and help the grand daughter. She has a problem with numbers and relationships, such as which is greater? 1 or 2? It seems like it would be natural but not to her. And, she has to have some science explained another way. So, I get to think and hope to learn again. LOL lew, Gunny and p_toad 3 Quote
