I was thinking (dangerous, I know) - wasn't sequencing dates the reason the military always noted the date as day/month/year, like 27July2020?

I think that's one of the built-in functions.  I have a new laptop and I haven't put excel on it yet.  IIRC, you select the column and then select the average function, or maybe reverse - get in a cell, hit =, then the function, then highlight the column.
