Popular Post Artie
Couple of weeks ago, one of the traveling walls was at The Cathedral of the Pines in Ringe NH. This is about a 30-40 minute ride from our place. It’s a very pretty ride, and we love the Cathedral. I have never been to DC, so I’ve never seen the Wall. The Missus’s Dad, did two tours in Viet Nam as a medic. I personally do not know anyone who is on the Wall, and I think that is a good thing. It was pretty moving,we were glad went. Al B
The moving wall will be at Plum Island airport Sept 3-11. About 4-5 miles from my home. I definitely hope to be able to see it, and yes, I hope to find the names of friends who gave their all there. High school friend who enlisted after his junior year. 82nd airborne. Was never seen after parachuting in Korea. Gene Howe, DuckSoup, Fred W. Hargis Jr and 7 others 4 6 Quote Link to comment
Popular Post Gene Howe
That Husqvarna Zero Turn is a true marvel! Took several minutes of mowing to find he sweet spot for speed and, to familiarize myself with the controls. I'm far from an accomplished operator but did manage to get an acre plus of 8" high grass cut down in about 2 hours at the highest deck setting. Cal, Fred W. Popular Post FlGatorwood
Gene, I've had a Toro ZTC for a few years now. Like Fred said, all those safety switches are a PITA. But, they sometimes do check our decisions. But, I love a ZTC. This fall, I am going to trade in the Toro because it has an unusual engine made by Lincon and marketed as a Toro engine. It is getting traded for a Kuboto. I mow about 1.6 acres with mine. Takes a couple hours. Artie, it is great that you don't know anyone on named on the wall. I know where a couple are, but there are a couple more that I need to find. Here, we have a computer to enter the name and the year of death of the comrade, it will tell you the panel. We lost 3 pilots our first cruise, a pilot and a seaman on the second cruise. I think there are a couple more, so I need to look at our cruise books. Al, enjoy the peace of that wall. It brings relief to me but I can't explain why. Fred W. Popular Post Gene Howe
After 65 years, I've given up cigarettes. Yep, I quit smoking. No cigars, no pipes, no chew. Popular Post Fred W. Hargis Jr
I applaud your choice, Gene. Be aware we are all pulling for you...I know it's not easy. BTW, don't forget: all the money you'll save. I haven't smoked (cigarettes) since I was 18, the woman who eventually became my wife wouldn't go out with a smoker. I did enjoy a cigar or 2 over the years, but was worried about them becoming a habit so I haven't had one in the last 5 years or so. Edited September 5, 2021 by Fred W. Popular Post DuckSoup
Good for you Gene. It's not an easy battle to win, I'm still fighting it myself. Cinnamon hard tack & spicey foods help me curb the urge. HARO50, Cal, Gunny and 6 others 8 1 Quote Link to comment
Popular Post Cal
Good on ya Gene! I think I gave them up at about 10 years of age. I was probably about 10 when the neighbor boys and I snuck one and lit up. First and last! Don't know how long I coughed and choked on that... JimM, Larry Buskirk, Fred W. Popular Post Al B
Hey Gene, quitting smoking is probably the best decision you've ever made. Stick with it and it will definitely make a difference. I quit after smoking for about 25 years at 2 packs a day. Really improved how I felt. And, you don't realize just how expensive it is. Not easy to do, but my urge to smoke was dampened when I asked myself if I was going to let those dumb cigarettes beat me . Be determined ! A battle you'll be glad you won. Similar reaction to the movie "We were soldiers." They were just kids. My grandson's other grandpa was a pilot in Viet Nam, and I was able to get their picture in front of the wall. Hopefully it will be meaningful to him some day. Larry Buskirk, Artie, Gunny and 5 others 8 Quote Link to comment

I used Chantix when I quit 12 years ago. It helped me. No matter how you go about quitting, you have to want it or it isn't happening. I'm rooting for you Gene!!! You can do it!!! Popular Post FlGatorwood
Congratulations, Gene. Great decision. Now you will have money to buy those coasters for the Shopsmith. I stopped smoking when ciggys went from 15 cents per pack to 25 cents per pack at the exchange. A year later, on my last cruise to Vietnam, I asked a shipmate for a Marlboro. Lit it up and got sick like it was my first. So glad I quit. My wife would have never dated me had I been a smoker. Man, am I glad I quit and I saved lots of money and have fewer health problems because of it. You can do this Gene. Continue with a progress report. Would love to see your progression. To those who visited the traveling wall, thank you. We veterans really appreciate that. Larry Buskirk, Fred W. Hargis Jr, DuckSoup and 4 others 7 Quote Link to comment

No daily updates. First, it would be monotonous and second, it would keep it in my thoughts. And, I don't need that. Fred W. Hargis Jr, Artie, FlGatorwood and 6 others 8 1 Quote Link to comment

Popular Post Artie
Weather permitting, Our son, his girl, my best friend, and meself are heading to Pease AFB this coming Saturday to see the Thunderbirds. Kay has never been to an airshow, so it oughta be a cool experience for her. They have announced that there will be a 20 year 9/11 ceremony. I’m really hoping that Hurricane Larry doesn’t interfere with our plans. Blue Angels were up at Brunswick Airport (formerly Brunswick Naval Airstation) in Maine, this weekend. Couldn’t make the 2 teams in 8 days happen for me. Cal, Fred W. Hargis Jr, Gunny and 3 others 6 Quote Link to comment

Gene it has been about 6 years for me now but I truely haven't beat it. Associating cigarettes with beer is my biggest downfall. Having friends that owned bars sort of put those two things together. Stopping at the bar after work or the weekend for football games are far and few now so that helps keeping me on the straight and narrow but the battle continues. The T-Birds are great but the Navy pilots are a good bit more daring. Artie, HARO50, Cal and 4 others 4 2 1 Quote Link to comment
