Popular Post Smallpatch
This is some inside sawing and for the pieces to be removed the sawing has to be right. This is 1" maple with lots of ins and outs with some tight turns. This kind of sawing with a scroll saw will separate the men from the boys. I can draw my patterns about as good as I can draw peoples faces.....terrible.... The main thing here is to keep the blade straight up and down if I want the pieces removeable and I think I will try the middle piece first... Can you see the four holes I have already drilled for the blade in the first picture. There are two holes in the middle piece and one each in the outside pieces.. I knew I should have erased some of those lines! but I'm more interested and hoping the pieces will come out and no I'm not good enough for the piece to slide out either direction...One direction will suit me...Yes and all three pieces came out of this slab of maple just fine but I have two more sides of the box still to go. Smallpatch
Gene you asked if these side pieces are molding, no but it might have been cheaper than all the grooming I did to a piece of maple to get to where I was going but that would have been light weight pine or spruce or fir. And I would have had to do some angle sawing anyway... Oh yea, the front of the carving will have the same angle as the background wood? Smallpatch
More experimenting. I still have one end of the box to put some thing to carve. I decided the pieces of the patterns were too big I used on the other sides so took some pieces to the printer and sent to pictures to rapid resizer and reduced the sizes where they would fit the end piece. I also laid the wood pieces face down and sent those pictures to resizer also. It saved redrawing to make smaller patterns! Smallpatch
me and maw was sitting out in the gazebo today and the inch worms are everywhere and they made me feel that is how the box carving is going, an inch at a time. p_toad, Gunny and Cal

Popular Post Smallpatch
Gun most of what I have done so far is experimenting...just ruffing in more or less but the trouble is if I don't like it I have to change what is etched in the wood....and one end after carving that end I got in a hurry and glued the center piece in before staining either the back ground or the piece and now going back and trying to stain the end piece with out touching the carving will be terrible when I finally get to that after all has been carved including the top which I haven't even thought on the lid. All the carved pieces will stick out maybe 1/4". But that's not how I have been carving in the past for after the carving pieces are cut away from the rest of the body then I lay the carved pieces out of the way and recessing the main body back by grinding 1/4" or so of all the rest of the wood. Just more of the un expected things to deal with.....I hope I don't give up on carved jewelry boxes of this type... Carving on these I made with the scroll saw would be the cats meow but there again these takes many days to complete just one box.. I used the scroll saw on these so there would be no saw cuts between the drawers anywhere making these very sturdy.... Smallpatch
Still playing around. Got to take a break tomorrow for we found a bargain on a stained glass shop that is shutting down and got to help maw since her wrist were operated on she is running out of supplies....about a six hour round trip or more. Besides I need more thinking on this box... There is so many different things a person can do when building a box like this for I now have about six different models in some stage of construction and when I get stumped I just switch over to another and keep going... Smallpatch
And none will look like each other. I'm thinking of putting wings and wheels on one for when the gg kids come they will have something to play on and then will revert back to jewelry boxes.
