Artie
Gonna change direction here, John feel free to move it. I got the recent April issue of Woodcraft magazine, and on the cover is a man at a lathe, turning. He’s wearing regular glasses, maybe readers. No mask, shield, face protection, and is wearing long sleeves, down to the wrist. Having NEVER turned before, but having done a little reading about it, this doesn’t seem right. Their version of an April fools day? I gotta think this isn’t the image they would want on their cover. Artie
I was figgering that would happen. The cover just struck me as wrong. Waiting for the turners to pipe in. lew, FlGatorwood, Gunny and 1 other
Steve Krumanaker
It is very seldom that I don't wear a full face shield even with small spindle turnings so I would that cover is a very bad example. lew
I'm not saying I always wear a face shield. Sometimes when using a chuck and tailstock combination, I will turn as shown on the cover. Safe? probably not as safe as it could be. I do wear glasses but if a piece breaks, they wouldn't offer much protection. As for the sleeves, he is wearing a turners smock. The cuffs are pretty tight. Long sleeve turners smocks/jackets are made this way. Artie, FlGatorwood, Gunny and 1 other
Gerald
I always wear a shield which has a filter and airflow(trend Airshield Pro) . I use my old Pharmacy smocks all short sleeved. But my shop does have a heat pump so climate is not a problem. Sanding I use a EZ mask and no sheild. HandyDan
If I'm turning smalls or pens I don't wear a face mask. Bowls and such I wear a face shield. Artie, Cal, Gunny and 1 other

Ron Altier
Now, I always use face shield and mask. I didn't always and quickly found out some woods aggravate my allergies, even if to get that last little bit done. I know better than not to use my PPE, I used it during all my working years and it was second nature to grab it before every job that required it. lew
Why? Because- I was experimenting with different speeds using negative rake cutters. Wondering if faster produced smoother surfaces. Apparently the bowl didn't like 2800 rpms. Still haven't found all of the pieces. This was a piece of locust. lew
Looks like a lot of the turnering smocks have short or mid length sleeves. I did find some that have long sleeves. They all had snugly fitting cuffs. Artie, FlGatorwood and Cal
lew
I sent an email to the editor of Woodcraft Magazine about the cover picture. He admitted that was probably not the best example. In part, he said- "At a magazine where we love to teach proper techniques and safety, we sure should have had Mr. Kehs don a face shield." So, @Artie, your face shield comments were spot on. Popular Post Artie
I’m not trying to cause trouble, or make any magazine look less than stellar. I thoroughly enjoy that magazine. I also didn’t set out to look for flaws. BUT after reading a lot of posts from the turners here, I think I am at least a little bit more book smart on turning than I was. I have posted before about asking for acceptable levels of safety for turning, because I do have som,e interest in trying to, and want to be safe when I do. When I saw that cover, something in my head clicked and the little voice in my head (okay, one of the little voices in my head lol), was saying, hey that don’t look right. So I hope I haven’t PO’ed one of our sponsors/future sponsors, Thanks for chiming in, everyone. Gene Howe
I don't turn. But, sharp spinny things dictate that long sleeves be buttoned tightly at the wrist. And, any jewelry and long hair is verboten. FlGatorwood, Artie and Gunny
