Popular Post Smallpatch
Even though the wood will be smooth to the touch like you see it in the photo it will depend on if you can leave it as is or sand it completely flat depends on what you are fixin to do with it. If this is to be used like it shows then this is great for it is much smoother than what sand paper can get but if you are to glue the two pieces together then yes they should be glue up and sanded so they look like one piece. But I will use the two sets of pieces about 4 or 5 inches apart so they do need to be exactly the same for what I will do in the next step...… by the way I don't even know exactly what the next step consist of so you will have to wait till I finish the next step so I will know also what it will look like.. And besides I didn't take a picture of what I am thinking of doing so so so. These are two different sizes of clock shapes and I first thought the front and back needed to be this thick until I went to the trouble of making the pair but now they look too thick so I set about cutting out the thinner pair which by the way the scroll saw could handle the thickness so not near as much hand labor!! I attached both pairs differently but both will come apart when I continue the build. By the way I think it is best to pilot drill some holes for the nails so not a chance for nails splitting the wood. I use number bits so I can make holes about .002 to .004 smaller than the nails or brads.. If its yours you can install drive in 16 penny nails with out the pilot holes if that suits you... Hopefully I will continue with the build later. Harry Brink, Gunny, Cal and 4 others
FlGatorwood
Beautiful work. I have no idea what it is supposed to be. Gunny and Cal 1
DuckSoup
Nice work @Smallpatch. Even after drilling I still like to flatten the point with a hammer. I guessing you are going to apply a face to these based on where you placed your nails & dowels? Cal, FlGatorwood and Gunny
Popular Post Smallpatch
Bob I use a bench grinder to take a about half of the point off. Not even thought of the face yet but I will flip the wood around so this showing side will be towards the wall then after I fill the holes I won't have to worry about them showing. The 3/8" dowels keeps the wood from shifting around while I let the 9" oscillating drum sander do its thing...Yes you do need one of these machines if you don't have one...floor model and I think all the machines on the market right now all came from the same place so Grizzly was the best price 20 years ago and maybe still are. We drove to Springfield and loaded a big trailer when I finally decided traveling was not the way to go for the rest of my life like my wife wanted to do. I won that round... I get most of the small things I build from pictures from catalogs like Wildwood Designs, Teddy bear and the other scroll saw catalogs. Enlarge them and you got a pattern. On the limbs I cut slices at big angles using the bandsaw to give more flat area for the pictures. You might recognize the animal pictures for they came from wood working catalogs about ten to fifteen years ago. I save all my catalogs for lots of ideas for my own use as patterns. The oak bark stays on good as does the mesquite. Edited September 12, 2019 by Smallpatch Gunny, Cal, FlGatorwood and 3 others
DuckSoup
Patch, the deer scenes are familiar I've bought a couple of patterns from Wildwood before. A lifetime of patterns in there. I won the Woodcraft 6" oscillating drum sander in this past years raffle. Your right , my first thought was " where have you been all my life". Used it to clean up some bracelets for the granddaughters... Gunny and Cal
