Popular Post steven newman
And, still making a mess... because the 11 other panels got jointed.. even ran through the saw to make sure the edges were parallel ... Getting a bit crowded? laid #1 on top of the stack... oops. #1 is a wee bit wider...tablesaw to remove a saw kerf from the two edges...then re-do the rebate... Almost there..needed to fine tune this... 362 does work as a decent jointer. Had to adjust the bevels a bevel, they were a tad..fat... Hmm..unless you follow the grain exactly, you will get tear out ...had to flatten the rebates with the Stanley 45...then a dry fit.. Close enough? need to start raising the rest of the panels...might wind up ankle deep in shavings? Stay tuned.. Popular Post steven newman
About 3-4 hours of shop time, today....shavings were piled up.. Running low on Gatorade, too.. tried to get a few more panels raised.. Hmm, this is going to be fun...when I mark out the stop line, it involves 2 lines,... telling me how far to plane the bevels..at least on the ends...then the edges are planed to match... get all 4 bevels done, then the tablesaw can define the rebates.. And then the 45 can clean these ends up...then a jig to do the edges... Again the 45 to clean these up...I need to clean the 45 up, now and then.. Ya think? kept going until I had a total of 6 panels raised, counting the first from last night Well, that's half of the panels I need done...decided to try a little layout work...set up a stile, and used a panel and 2 rails...to mark mortise locations...then tried a dry fit...to see how it came out... Something wasn't lined up..usual luck.. Ok, re do the lay out the easy way. plop another stile on top of the mess.. This way I can see where the mortises will be...mark each location..then take all this apart.. Parts is parts? Grabbed 4 stiles, and ganged them up.. Messy...made sure the ends were flush..plane is to carry the layout marks ( the good ones) across all 4 with a square, so all the mortises will line up In theory... Then decided it was...Quitting Time! Floor was cleaned up, back was sore...closed up shop, for the day.. stay tuned...might even work on a Monday? Popular Post hatuffej
Mr. Newman I'll have you know that a pile of shavings on the shop floor is never a mess. Popular Post steven newman
had the shop fan set on HIGH, today... didn't help a whole lot Found out that IF I clamp 4 stiles to the bench... And dig out those three chisels... And a mallet of some kind...I could chop a hole.... The rest of the little holes is from a single hit on the end of the Howe Mortise Chisel, to mark where the next hole will go...then do a dry fit... A little fine tuning, and the top rail will be done...only 19 more holes to chop, and 4 stiles ( out of 6) will be almost ready for clamps and glue..may take a day or three FlGatorwood, lew, Harry Brink and 4 others

I dug about 20 post holes for a corral, including railroad ties at the corners. Then, I did probably 30 for a fence until I finally decided to hire it out. Dug by hand with a shovel. Popular Post steven newman
Started to the shop @ 1100 hrs...came back up for Lunch @ 1400 hrs.... Moved the shop fan a bit. had to clean off the shop stool, too... One hour later... All 20 mortises were done...checked for fit... Decided to try a glue up....had to fight a couple spots....hammer helps...but.. Had an issue with the raised panel being a 1/16" too long....trimmed these..and re-cut the rest...they weren't allowing the rails to fully seat... Foot details...cut before the glue up. Just a simple curve... Started on side #2...was getting a few dry fits as i went.. had one panel with a problem ... I need to cut a bevel through this? Even the rebate was knotty... Meh....when I place a rail along this edge... Then place both into the stile...as the bottom of the side.. Hmmm.. did a dry run, to see how much trouble the glue up will be...and where the clamps will go....but, no glue..yet had one rail that did not want to enter it's mortise. hammer and a small block of wood to help it find it's way... 3 hours of messing around...leaves a bit of a mess... Mainly from raising just 2 panels....sheesh. Decided it was Lunch time.. Still have the mortises for side #3 to chop, and raise 4 more panels....might try to glue up side #2... Grain is nice, just a PITA to plane...this is the one with that knot on the edge...hope it was the only one. stay tuned...I might actually get a little work done, today.... Popular Post steven newman
Well, tore the test fit apart, ran some glue around the tenons...clamps back on...then set it aside... Yes, there are two of these sitting here... Which leaves these parts to work on... Mortise locations are laid out....will try to raise a couple panels...one was...special.. And this was the "good" side... And this..wasn't. Even had to scale back the 45 a bit....finally got things done, test fit a couple rails.. This is what you'll see from the outside... Been using this fancy plane to fine tune bevels.... Got 2 panels raised, then the back started hurting... Second panel was almost...boring....may try to get some work done, tomorrow...only had 4-1/2 hours, today... Stay tuned.. lew
Really like the way you shaped the legs/feet of this one. steven newman and FlGatorwood 1
steven newman
Ok, for those that want an idea about sizes... finished sides are 3/4" x 18-5/8" wide x 31" tall Rails are 16", counting the 1/2" long tenon on each end....rails are 3/4 " x 1-1/2' x 16" raised panels are 15-5/16" wide...by ~ 5" top to bottom. Grooves are 1/4" x 1/4". Mortises then go another 1/4" deeper. tenons are 1" by 1/4" by 1/2" long. May do a top and bottom webframe....or...just make 5 frames. Need a rebate along the back edges of two sides, to house a 1/4" plywood back. There will be a stretcher/foot rest across the back of the kneehole... Thinking drawer fronts (4 larger ones) need to be around 3/4 x 5" x 13" or so...depends on the width of the 1 x 6s I have. back is still acting up....taking a day off, if nobody minds.. Stay tuned.. Popular Post steven newman
Just puttering around today...last 2 stiles are done.. Feet and mortises...last 2 panels ? Hmm, maybe the other face is better? Same board. was finally able to clean all the parts up.. Some were a bit rough...might get the hang of this fancy plane..someday Clamps and glue.. have 3 sides done....dug through the recycle stash.. To see IF there is enough for 5 webframes.... Not quite....need 5 more of the longer rails/stiles.... Need to go to the lumber yard, and pick up a bit more Pine 1xs.... Popular Post steven newman
Lumber has been bought... three 1 x 2 x 6'. and a 1 x 4 x 4'....pick of the litter at Lowes, today...Finally was able to get to the shop about ...1500 hrs....early quitting time was 1800 hrs... Clamped a side on to the side of the bench... Changed out the Stanley 45's cutter for a wider one, reset the fence....may have forgot to reset the depth stop.. Ya think? it does take a while to cut down 1/4", though.. kept checking, to make sure I was cutting on the correct spot...Side #1 and Side #2 nee a rebate along the back to house the plywood back of the case scrap to check the depth setting.. Once both sides were done, I clamped them together, and set them aside for now.. As I had a lot of milling to do. had a start the other night... But only had 5 of the longer stiles. needed 9 more. The long stiles go like this one, and the drawers will ride on them. 4 of these will be set aside, as they are for the knee hole area. Set up the tablesaw to mill a few grooves... 1/4" wide, by 1/2" deep..was just easier on the saw. Needed tenons to fit in these grooves.. 20 of them.... Stiles are attached to the case with a pair of screws in each stile...first a countersink was made.. To allow the driver tip access,,,then a pilot hole.. Electric drill, this time as it was already set up.. then some glue, and some 5/8" long nails 2 nails per joint. Checked for square as I went...some of the joints needed a clamp to pull them tight. One done, 4 more to do. These frames will get an Ash face frame piece, dovetailed into the front stiles of the case... Debating on using a kicker, too...got all 5 webframes assembled, and set aside to dry.. And, sitting in the stash of Pine scrap...there was an Ash 1 x 6....just big enough... After I trimmed it a bit..looks like a drawer front, to me. More errands to run...waiting on glue to dry....might mill a few kickers. was a busy day...1/2 of which was spent in the van. stay tuned, might get a case assembled...tomorrow? Popular Post steven newman
Sitting here, peeling dried glue off me fingers... Went to get the webframes ready to go...they were all stuck together. Decided to get the kickers ready.... counterbores...then a pilot hole was drilled in each one..finally able to get the frames apart.. glue and a couple 1" screws, 4 out of the 5 frames get a kicker...cleared the bench.. Got the two sides unclamped, set one on the bench, and gave it a good sanding..while I could...then.. Glue and 2 screws...and... Things got crowded quick....then the "fun" part...each frame needs a bead of glue, BEFORE it get set onto the other side panel..so.. Glue, rotate, and repeat the screws....add a few clamps.. While I scrounge around for enough plywood to add a back to the case...and pull this thing into square Glued and screwed in place..couldn't find one sheet long enough, had to add a bit at the bottom 2 frames..should have stopped here for the day.. One Ash plank provided these, and not much else. Sometimes called drawer dividers, other times just face frames "Plan" WAS to use a through dovetail to connect these to the sides....somehow these wound up being an 1/8" too short...after the top one was installed...I just lopped off the excess and did without the tails on the ends... Just glue, this time....after this picture was taken, I added a few more clamps...letting this mess sit a while... Cleaned the work area.. Cozy place, eh? Trash can is getting a bit full... Couple more days, and it will be headed for the firepit... wound up with one of the case's feet longer than the others...next time, I'll trim the long one down a smidge. need to build the 2 webframes that connect this case to the leg unit...both need an Ash 1 x 2 across the front edges... Stay tuned... Gerald, FlGatorwood, Cal and 6 others

Popular Post steven newman
had a little more done last night, and a 2 hour shift, this afternoon... These are the parts from last night, arranged as to how they will go together...brought a 4/4 x 4" x 5' Ugly board to the shop, today.. handsome, ain't? Some spots were worse Hmm, should be fun...cut the board down a bit, needed 2 sections, at least 28" long... One of the 2 needed to be 2" wide...which left that knot out.. This half will make a couple narrow 2" high drawer fronts. After a couple rip cuts... first one at 2-1/4" wide, then flip the boards over, reset to 2", and run the other edge through, with the freshly straight edge against the fence.. which left getting these from a rough 4/4" down to a better looking 3/4" thickness..blade will not reach 2" in height, took two passes, but.. Not too ugly, now Stiles will get a groove milled, instead of the rails, this time. Wanted to keep the joints out of sight..so groovy! Then set up to mill tenons to fit....after the first rail got it's two tenons milled, took two stiles and the rail over to the case's side..to check how wide things were.....yep..too wide by a 1/2" Recut the rest while also milling all the tenons...4 rails, and this wide center thingy.. Center is to guide both drawers. Centered on the runner, glued and screwed in place...but, there was a problem.. As this block sits in a dado, and overlaps the runners....no biggie.. Just notch the block...then had to trim the top of the block, so when the top stile sits don on the block, there is 2" of space between the stiles..Saw was busy.. used the langdon 75...both to trim that block down ( took a couple tries..) and also to trim the back board... assembly time? Got the lower frame assembled.. 2 nails per joint and a bit of glue, and clamps..checked for square...adjust for square...check again...adjust again ( tad too far the first adjust..) then add the back.. may go back and assemble the top frame...as this is a unit...not too bad, for about 2 hours of shop time? BTW, the rails were ugly, as well... Edges were..rough...and.. A tad too thick....ran these (4) through with the other "ugly" boards... After this "unit" is complete? Drawers, maybe? Or, just glue up the top? Stay tuned...we be moving at the speed of smell..... LarryS, Cal, Gunny and 4 others
