Popular Post steven newman
That stash of Ash has sat long enough..brought home in the van a few weeks ago... I think there was 40bf in this mess? That fancy grained one...used to be 11' or so long...may look good as raised panels? So, I did a rough sketch of what I wanted to build...to keep measurements from getting lost There will be a "hutch" on top....waiting to see how the rest turns out... Need to build 3 panels, to form the sides... "RP" is for raised panels. Frame is 3/4' x 2" x how ever long I need. Raised panels will sit in 3/8" grooves. Set up so the "rails" are where the runners for each drawer will be. The place where my knees go? Figured a 28" wide drawer was a bit much...split the drawer into 2 drawers. Drawer fronts are 2" by about 14" (closer to 12" with the center divider) means I need to build 2 frames, with the center divider... need to get the shop "cleared for action" and then decided where to start cutting....and shaping...and gluing up....Top is a 5 board glue-up! 3/4" x 26" x 50"! Stay tuned.... Harry Brink, HARO50, Cal and 6 others

steven newman
Taking a Gatorade break....2 hours, so far of running the saw....already have had a couple design changes....( don't need a 24" drawer depth, front to back, anyway..) Popular Post steven newman
4 hours of shop time, today...made a big mess, too.. That floor WAS clean, this morning, BTW. Toys were cleared off the bench...and into the "tool drawer" Might be about time to open a second drawer? Cleaned a "new" marking gauge, just in case I would need one.. or two Set these aside, until needed..hauled a few planks to the shop... turned out, I would need a 5th plank, later. Set up the rip fence, for 2" And tried to get 6 stiles..about ~ 31" long.. The rest will be for rails...there was a slight problem, though.. Some of the stiles needed to loose a little "weight". Reset the rip fence...ran each through..even taking down a few high spots A second problem.. None match the others for length....ganged them all up ran this over the tablesaw...and That stack of "shorts" ? Well, I needed 15 rails to go with the stiles, to make 3 side panels. ran out of lumber...in the shop. design change...rails are now 16" instead of 20" long..and are 1-1/2" wide, instead of 2"...so, brought down another plank..the 5th today... Hmm, this end is mainly...junk the other end? Meh.. good thing I didn't need to long of a piece.. And, was hoping I could get 4 rails...not Didn't feel like trashing an entire board ( that I would have to haul to the shop) so..I dug around, and found a clear 1 x 2 of Pine....figure the top rail that sits between the drawers, and out of sight..can be Pine.. So.. NOW there are 15 rails....even these had to be slimmed down a bit...some 4/4 got mixed in...now they are all 3/4" ( more of less) ran into a problem the last time I used the Stanley 45 to mill grooves in boards this narrow...fence gets in the way...so, tablesaw to try to mill 1/4" x 1/4" grooves Took 2 set ups, but got most of the grooves done...need to clean out the bottoms of the grooves.. No fence needed, depth stop at 1/4", 1/4" cutter...and wax the skates. Went through all the grooves, this way..couple of the rails were a tad rough edged We have ways. laid out for tenons...set up the the tenon cutter.. Because there are 30 tenons to do...didn't take all that long to do, this way.. And that might do it, for one afternoon tomorrow, need to set up a jig.. called a mortise jig. I can clamp a stile in it, and chop a mortise, without the board hopping around on the bench. For some reason, I seem to be a tad tuckered out...maybe get more done tomorrow? Popular Post steven newman
Before I can chop the mortises, I need to know how far apart from each other they need to be....more Layout work And, I need to somehow get a 7' long plank down the stairs ( even I have to duck down near the last 3 steps..) and cut a bunch of blanks for length....cussing will be involved waiting for things to cool down a bit...almost 90 degrees outside... have $3 in tools to clean up, BTW... Square is a Stanley SW 8" all metal square...chisel? TBD.... Edited June 28, 2019 by steven newman Cal, HARO50, Gunny and 2 others

Popular Post steven newman
Ok...Hauled 3 planks to the shop...cut and sort....to get the best out of them... (and the cussing started right away..) Needed 12 blanks....pick of the litter, too edges are a bit rough, and have a curve or two...we have ways Needed one panel done, to lay out mortise locations...had to decide on a show face.. I think this will do the trick...needed a plane to raise the panel... But, decided a #4c was a tad too big...went with the #3c instead....and the MF #11...do the end grain first.. made a "stop line" 1" in from the edge. ran a plane for a while, at the diagonal to the grain.. Until this showed up...Wanted just under a 1/2" left....got the ends done, then the long grain edges.. Until a nice 45 degree line shows in the corners..I thought about using this other plane, and even tried it... But, it takes so thin of shavings, it would take too long..kept it out for fine tuning the fit. Needed to mill a rebate.. All the way around...tried the Wards 78...was too dull..spur wasn't cutting. Set up the stanley 45 instead. rather than mess with it's spurs, I set up the tablesaw to make a few cuts that the spurs were supposed to do. test fit? Works for me. This would be the "inside" view of the side panels...trying to keep thing "flat" on the inside.. Was making another big mess on the floor.. And this from just one panel...imagine what the rest of the 12 will make... Got all four edges done..and then another dry fit... Again the insider's view...need to chop mortises for the tenons into the rails...and.. What you will see from the outside. 4 such panels per side. swept the floor..again..and called it a night. I missed all the evening's entertainment....seems the 3 dogs that live here...caught and killed a raccoon on the back porch, tonight... maybe I can get a little work done, tomorrow?
