Popular Post steven newman
A friend dropped off a "project" for me to rehab.... The rest of the parts were in a bunch of baggies.. and these.. and.. Lots of tiny parts....and not all the parts were there.. Lever to unlock the swing arm... Guide rods attach here...block for the front set is MIA. saw guides. assembled on set.. These slide on the rods, and guide the saw. Newer models had roller bearings... One bag had just 4 bolts.... To install the feet with. There is also a dozen small wood screws, to attach a wooden "deck" to the metal frame. Been about 3 years since I last rehabbed a Stanley No. 358 Mitre Box... Trying to remember which part goes where....and, this was a newer model, than the one I am now working on.... Need to buy a 1/2" thick Poplar plank....something about iron vs Oak (or Ash).....there is even a few wood screws, to attach the box to a bench. Might take a while to get the latest version rehabbed, and making sawdust. Stay tuned.. p_toad, HARO50, Cal and 4 others

Popular Post steven newman
Bought a couple planks, to make a new deck.. Clear Pine....1/2" thick. Needs trimmed a bit? Also picked a Poplar board...in case I mess the pine one up... Also bought a can of Black Rustoleum....non "bright works" parts will get a decent coat of black, to keep the rust bunnies away.. Before & After....Nickel Plate was flaking off...wire wheel to clean and polish. Both sets of guides are now cleaned and oiled up. Turned out, these have a ruler along one rod, in each set.. Runs from "0" at the bottom up to "7" about where the guides are sitting. Little brass collars are to set the depth of cut Waiting on a few missing parts to show up. Slowly getting there... Popular Post steven newman
Friend that dropped the box of parts off, think she may have more parts for it, in her spares box... Fellow over on LJs says he has the parts I am missing... For handplanes? nhplaneparts over on ebay... Took the frame back apart, or tried to... Was going to get the frame painted, today....could not get one bolt to budge.. The slotted one. I did get the other one freed up. Rusty! Decided to give things a good soaking, outside Impact gun didn't even budge it. Also have the locking assembly soaking.. Rusty oil was rolling out. Turned it over.. Filled that "smile" with the Rust Soak by WD40....will let it sit a while..inside. maybe by the time the next TPW get together happens, I'll have this rehab done....may take it along as a "Door Prize "? Gunny
Maybe some propane or MAP gas to heat it up some to encourage it to move? steven newman, HARO50, FlGatorwood and 1 other
p_toad
That or a tap on head of a screwdriver set into the slot. I find that often works wonders on old ceiling fans with stuck phillips screws. Popular Post FlGatorwood
Beautiful tool and I always wanted one. That is one tool that makes the most sense to me. I have a DeWalt power mitre saw and I love it, but not nearly as classic as what you are working one. Nowadays, I have no need for a tool like this. Don't get much action in the shop these days. Yard work and house work. Going to figure a way to budget my time to steal a few hours weekly to make some dust. Popular Post steven newman
Give this a try... Large enough? Paint the frame, once that swing arm was removed Front and back.. Swing arm has arrived in the shop.. What parts I could remove from it...got wire wheel cleaned.. And, a weld bead cleaned up.. the "3" is because this is a #3 size frame. Trying to decide on a paint job for this thing.. Lots of moving parts go in here... gave the "King Bolt" a couple hours of soaking with the PBBlaster spray.....visegrips and a BIG screwdriver to finally get it to budge. Then get the detent pin to release so I could slide the arm off the frame. That name plate is now back on the end of the frame.... steven newman
Beka has the OEM saw....plus I have one from the other #358 mitre box....out of the 4 that came with it, back in 2016.....sold the mitre box and it's saw to stumpy down at Charles Neil's get together...sold 2 saws on feebay...kept one as a spare for the langdon 75, for when it's saw was being sharpened. Saw I picked at a garage sale today...is for a Goodell-Pratt mitre box...says so right on the saw's plate. steven newman
Deck has been trimmed to size... Haven't decided whether to use this Pine version, or use it as a pattern to trim the Poplar one. Painting the swing arm in a little bit. Have to tape the areas I don't want painted...first. Yard sales today..picked a few hollow shaft nut drivers....50 cents a piece...picked up 3. Sold as "Fuller" brand. Once the paint dries, and the tape comes off...I can start to assemble the swing arm. Stay tuned.. FlGatorwood, HARO50 and p_toad
Popular Post steven newman
Ok..arm has been "masked up", painted, un-maske, touched up a few spots I missed....then wire wheel to remove paint from where I didn't need any... And... Stanley painted the edge of the lever..so did I.. Have two baggies worth of parts, and still not enough? No wonder these things weigh so much. Sheesh, like building a car? That rod? Stanley used a "Rod & Tree" system, to set the length for repeat cuts. All I have is the one rod. Goes through the feet in special brackets, and a bolt in each holds the rod... This end is also where the name plate goes...attached with two bolts. Better view of the new deck? Had to bevel the bottom back edge, so it will sit back to the box's back wall. The 2 rods for the saw guides....this goes on top, along with the latch that keeps the saw raised off the work...still need the small bolts, only have 2 out of 4...but, I do have both thumbscrews? Thumbscrew holds a flat bar between the two guides...have the bar in the box, awaiting both sets of guides to get assembled and installed.. These boxes used a flat bar, and a short rod..to make stock holders. They slide through those openings in the back wall. Suppose to slide in shallow dados, the flat bar flush with the top of the deck. Items in this baggie are the clamps to hold the flat bar in place. There is a place for these on the back of the frame First, I need to fabricate new stock holders. So..if later today, you hear a lot of cussing going on, it means I am putting the parts back into the swing arm... Stay tuned... Popular Post steven newman
Ok...( I don't have any room to host more than 2 people, sorry..) Here we go....assembly time..have to put all these parts back where they belong, in the order they belong, and the directions they have to be in... For some reason, am unable to rename these pictures.... Some of these needed a coat of grease, so they will slide/rotate easy...took a while, one shaft wanted to rotate the wrong way...Finally.. and..( this is the side that faces up, steel pin in brass barrel is the locking pin, barrel with notch slides along the rail of the quadrant..) Underside. There is a "keeper" to keep the arm unlocked, so you can slide the arm around to the next location, save wear and tear on the locking pin.. Once the locking end was adjusted, and slid in place...this PITA was next..collar the King bolt rides on is a press fit...finally slid in place when the bolt bottomed out. More fussing...until things move easily, but wasn't sloppy. Spent a little time, getting the guides arranged... top of the front guide,, And the bottom. Spring is for when you release the saw from the catch at the top....think shock absorber...Missing most of the bolts for the brass stops... What these look like, when everything is there... Guide for the back needs a few parts....Decided to attach the new deck..needed a couple hand tools for that.. 12 TINY wood screws...needed to pre-drill, and then the "other" Yankee to drive each screw home.. I even was able to "clock" the slots on the screws. Tried to cut 2 pieces of flat bar stock....3 hacksaws, 3 dull blades? Hmmm So, before I can cut that bolt to length, will need a new blade for the hacksaws...I have to drill and tap a hole for the bolt to thread into....cut the excess threads off, grind and pean in place..and also cut the hex head off, round the top edges. I also need to cut 2 dados.. So the bar will sit flush with the top of the deck. That be a keeper, thumbscrew to attach at the back. Stock holders are just that, they hold a piece of stock/wood against the back fence, while you make the saw cuts....stock also goes up against 2 pointy screws... These screw in from the back of the fence...points hold stock so it won't slide Will see IF I can come back, and edit the names.... Stay tuned... FlGatorwood
That is a complicated machine. Thanks for stepping us through this thing so we can see how it goes together and operates.
