Popular Post steven newman
had a bunch of scraps of Ash stashed away....from before all the medical stuff went on....decided to see what I could cobble together from it.... found 4 pieces that almost matched each other...almost. Cut them for length...at least to remove a couple bad knots...and clamped them all together Goal was to get 2 pairs close enough for a couple glue ups.. First pair needed a caul in the middle, to keep things flat... Which left these two.... About 3/8" thick, maybe? which left a stack of shorties to sort through... May glue up the best of these for ends of a box? There was a few thicker pieces.. That I could make corner posts out of.....even had a few to make a lid with.. Might be enough there? may need to use a few toys... Grandson is using one of these, remodeling a passage door to his room.... letting the glue-ups sit a while....and see how things shape up.... Popular Post steven newman
Hmm...ok, back to building a box....one panel is out of the clamps.....sander and a plane to clean it up.. Plane of choice this time? Stanley No. 3c. Has 3 patent dates, yet has a SW iron. Might be a Type 11/12 tweener? Will get to the other one tomorrow.. Yes, that IS a type 2 Work Mate...I did manage to joint a couple edges, and spread a bit of glue, too Vise makes a nice "third hand" This may be for the end of a box, or, both ends...depending on how things go... Panel #4 is going to take a bit more work... Thinking of Box joint corners for the box (es).....May get one, may get 2 boxes out of this pile....we'll see. Box Joints will be hand cut, of course. Stay tuned.. Gunny, p_toad, Grandpadave52 and 2 others

Popular Post steven newman
Been snowing here all afternoon long....March is being stubborn about this snow stuff.... Hid out in the shop, spent just under 2 hours.... Panel #3 is cleaned up....panel #4 is in the clamps....Needed a lot of work from that plane... Got panel #2 all cleaned up.....thinking these are way to big for just a single box...(waiting on #4 to cure) Scrounged up enough parts to make two lids....Waiting on clamps before a glue up... Diagonals to find the center, square a line across....split the line... Only to find out that it wasn't the center, and had to recut the longer side Then try again on the longer sides.... turned out that panel #3 was also wider than the longer sides.....had to plane the excess off.. Got a little bit done, today.....may try on Tuesday to start on finger jointing these..... Stay tuned Cal, Harry Brink, Thad and 3 others
Popular Post steven newman
Monday has gone away, for now....Tuesday usually means a wee bit of time in the shop. First thing, get three boards ready to glue up, into a blank for a lid...one edge wasn't quite ready....#4c fixed that... Then, had issues with the two longer sides being out of square, and not matching each other....got that fixed, and double checked Set them up in the vise, had lay out work to do... Ganged them together, and marked where the ends will go, and carry the line around, with a small combo square...next.. 6mm chisel ( Gene Howe Chisel) to set the spacing of the fingers (minor miracle, they all came out even ) next. Used the small squares to square off the lines...needed something to follow with a saw... Lowered the pair into the vise, so things don't vibrate from the saw, rub the saw with a plain old candle..soon enough.. That be a LOT of cuts, all had to split the lines, and stay straight...Next, set one of these aside, easier to chop these one at a time.. Chop about halfway down, and leave a small tab on the end for support....as next, I'll flip this over, and finish the chopping from the other side Next, use these fingers, to layout the cuts on one of the end panels...repeat the saw and chop, trying to leave the lines, staying on the waste side...I hope then a test fit... Well, I tried to leave the lines...first one in quite a while, so I am out of practice..second one was a tad better.. Second attempt is on the right...right about here, camera battery started to go dead...needed a Mountain Dew Break, anyway.. next trip to the shop...will try to get the other end of this one done....and start on Box #2? Stay tuned.. Thad, Gunny, hatuffej and 5 others

Popular Post steven newman
Boss wanted to go to Menard's , today , so, I picked up a few hinges to use on these boxes... That white "peg board"? I can barely see the teeth on this saw, let alone count them....may save it for small moldings? Managed to get the last two corners done on Box #1.. Nice when I need a mallet to drive these together... yep, all 4 corners....even checked this for square,, 1 done, 1 to go? may just finish #1 first.....Lid is also out of the clamps... I figure I can cut off the bad spots, then get it square and flat....then work on #2 Stay tuned...resting up the back, tonight...and, getting taxes filed tomorrow afternoon.... Popular Post steven newman
Hmmm...cleared off the bench. . At least enough to start the glue up....laid the parts out... Board stretcher? At least these will stay in order Spread a bunch of glue around, and added a "few" clamps.. That be a start Flipped this over... Running out of room for clamps had one bar clamp that didn't want to do the diagonal.. so the H-F one took over Another view? Pine scraps as cauls....checked for square.. And....double checked... Will let this mess sit a day...half afraid to move it... later, will clean it up, inside and out...square the outside of the corners, and see about a bottom panel...good thing I only had one box to glue up, need more clamps... Stay tuned p_toad, Harry Brink, Grandpadave52 and 3 others
