What would be an easy 90 degree joint besides just screwing/nailing the two together at the ends (one overlapping the other)? Butt joints? I don't have a draw saw (whatever that japanese saw is called). I do have a jig saw and a hack saw.

Depending on the scope/purpose of your project, pocket holes will work and give you a strong joint too...

Kreg Jig or Milescraft 200

I've read good reviews on the Milescraft. Kreg offers a variety of option above the one linked. I have the Kreg K-4; bought it off CL for $25...had been used once.

Plenty of You-tube videos on how to use both.

w/ splines...

pocket holes don't do well over time and under stress..

ie.. the table apron to leg joint fastened only w/ glue and pocket screws only...

move the table every so often... one or two drags and you'll toast the joint(s)...

make your own PH jig...
