Popular Post steven newman
Was unable to sleep last night....went back to the shop for a bit, puttered around Made a mess of the place....Trimmed two boards for length....and tried to joint the edges, and face plane the boards smooth Plane is a Millers Falls No. 11....seemed to be about the right size for the job.. Finally headed to the shop, today....about..1300 hrs....set up the "Joinery Bench" after cleaning things up Where a lot of the work gets done, lately Had a few more tenons to mill... Just like before, mitre saw to make the shoulder cuts, backsaw to make the cheek cuts, chisel to clean up.... Even to trim things back a bit....less for me to chop a hole for Time to chop a few mortises Usual suspects...lay out a mortise... Chop a hole... Then a test fit... Might just do......turn the leg end for end... Stretcher fits....move on to the next leg...the one these connect to....then finally a dry fit.. Just clamps, no glue..yet...repeat for the other side assembly...( chisel had nicked a knuckle, never felt it..not sure when it happen ) Dry fit the other assembly....still need 4 mortises made, to attach the front and rear apron with...."Mickey Mouse" said it was 1600hrs...decided to stop for the day.. need to chop the mortises, run a router/ cove bit along a few edges....cobble up the corner blocks....maybe a glue up? Later, I worn out, now... Stay tuned Grandpadave52, FlGatorwood, p_toad and 6 others

Popular Post steven newman
Slept straight through the night....yep, pulled an "all-nighter" Must have been a tad bit tired Will see IF I can get a glue up done by this evening....then work out the "details" for the desk's "hutch" Nothing on paper, yet... "Design" is for this to look like that standing desk....writing lid with a book stop near the bottom of the lid. Except....lid opens towards the front, book stop becomes a support/rest and a keyboard gets set on the "underside" of the lid. Open the lid, to use the keyboard. Hutch will be that the monitor will be about eye level....sides of the hutch will be about...6" or so, counting the top shelf. Not sure yet, what will be inside the hutch. Not much room. Top of the base: Doubt IF I will glue up a panel....looking more towards a "frame"...mitered corners, wide enough for the hutch to sit on....inside the frame and the hutch will be a plywood panel...hidden by the hutch. The Devil is in these details Will have to see what the Infamous Single Brain Cell Sketch Up comes up with... lew, Cal, p_toad and 6 others

Popular Post steven newman
Roh-kay, Raggy....headed for the shop at the start of the ravens/chargers 4th quarter.....finally emerged from the shop just after 1900Hrs....Had to do a Forrest Gump Cardio Workout was "saved" until about the end of the day....Had a few other things that needed done, first... Before any glue ups could get done, needed to run some molding...I don't have a cove cutter for the 45, so.. Took that big straight bit out of the router..and replaced it with I ose this one, because it makes a smaller cove cut than the regular bit....height was a tad low.. My version of a "Router Lift". Was going to use the bench to hold the parts.. Guess not...still had mortises to chop...used the tablesaw instead... Clamped at this end, route down to the clamp, move the clamp to the other end, finish the cut. Long aprons, so I could decide which was the "show side". Legs get two coves, 4th corner won't show....all the aprons get the single cove... Stretchers got two, to the outside. Chopped mortises into a couple legs....marked them for which long apron went where...then glued one side up Then worked on the other end parts, test fitting as I went...also had to keep track of where them long aprons were going...and marked them.. Welcome to my Little World. Finally got the other end into the clamps...thought I would dry fit the long aprons, as well... watch out for that bottom clamp Was going to add footrests to the bottom stretcher with dovetails....parts weren't long enough Will attach them with counter-bored screws, and plugs. First, needed to square the ends....then.. And not just the edges needed work... This might take a while...hmm, marked and cut the corner blocks out of Pine scraps...while I figured things out At least I am getting better at cutting these things Ok, needed to get these drilled and counter sunk, and stashed away...cleared the top of the bench And jointed one edge on both boards....set up the fence on the saw....narrowest spot on the board was a hair over 2" wide Set the fence right at 2" and ran the boards through.. In theory, this should be a straight board,,,wound up jointing the sawn edge, but, it only took a couple passes. Face planed to complete the S4S remember that funky end grain view? Look any better? And that was the Cardio Workout for today... Ya aught to see the floor.. set the two boards aside, and the saw,,, Hmm...may need to take out the trash.. Decided this will do, for one day...might even work tomorrow we'll see. Might have got a little something done, today. Stay tuned... Popular Post steven newman
Was told to go and take 1/2 the load out of the washer, and start them in the dryer....decided a glue up could be done...since I was already down there Brought along a special drill/driver... Called a "Hammerhead" can either drive/hammer...or just hammer. Corner blocks were installed with it, after the long aprons were glued and clamped.. I can then use these to also attach the top...whatever it will be, using slotted holes through these blocks. Thought about cleaning the shop.. Figured this could wait until tomorrow.....checked the base for square....was about 1/8" out... And pulled things back into square.....that will do for a Monday... Stay tuned.. p_toad, Grandpadave52, Cal and 5 others
Popular Post steven newman
Took those clamps off today....drilled a few holes Counter bored first, then another drill for the pilot holes...One holes was centered, the other about 1/2 way to the back leg...1-1/8" screws, and a dab of glue.. While that pilot hole drill was "handy"... Drilled a slotted hole in each corner block...set the base aside for a while...had to find out some measurements.. Measured how long the parts of a frame needed to be...cross cut those. Needed to find the exact center...and, after jointing an edge, ran the long and the short pieces through... Goal was to build a frame, with mitered corners...that was the plan.. Milled a tongue on the shorter pieces, on the tablesaw.. then the groove to almost match.. Also done on the tablesaw...needed a chisel to clean these up.. had to trim the matching part a bit.. Then a test fit.. no glue..yet...finally got the corners done..glue spread...LOTS of clamps.. Will let this sit a spell.... Can now start on the desk part.....stay tuned DuckSoup, FlGatorwood, p_toad and 6 others

Maybe you need to start building "stock" items and set up a booth at the local flea mall? Food for thought. Popular Post steven newman
Did the Flea Market thingy back in the 80s....was too much like a job.... On "Stand-by" for Mom....wound up in the ER last night...was then sent back to Campbell House, orders are to keep her Comfortable...may have a Hospice thing coming in... I have a bad chest cold going on....can't get too close to Mom... Anyway, after a nap in this computer chair for part of the afternoon....took the frame out of the clamps...drilled 8 counter bored holes,,,and attached the frame to the base.. Sanded everything down...after trimming 8 plugs down flush... Yep, there IS a plug in there....where? Right there. Need to fill the joints a bit Was waiting until after the cove bit went by.. Slotted holes in the corner blocks? Missed it by that much, Chief...Dug up the best looking, scrawny Ash board in the shop.. needs trimmed for length, edges jointed...will be the front of the desk unit...have to haul the last planks to the shop...later...and see what I can cobble up..need to cut a rebate around the inside of the frame, to lay a plywood panel into.....to be the "floor" of the desk... Popular Post steven newman
Some dummy just can't stay out of the shop...almost to sore to move, now Daughter stopped in to see how Mom was doing....seems to be doing a little better... Hauled a 1 x 6 to the shop.....figured out how long to make a few parts.....was having "issues" with the mitre gauge....wasn't playing nice with the squares, and not holding settings. may shop around for new one, and fire the old one..Somehow got the front and back parts cut for length.. Both are a tad rough sawn...needed these two, to get the length for the ends...then mark out a diagonal line,,,,once they were cut square on the ends..tried to cut the worst out.. Tried for 3-1/2 to 4" at the top...and match the 2" at the narrow end....draw the line, bandsaw to cut.... Used this as a pattern for #2,,and cut it out.. Then had to beltsand and plane until all the edges matched....and do a S4S for all four parts.. That old #6c was starting to get a bit heavy.. Set these all aside.. Figured THAT was enough for one day...maybe dovetails tomorrow? We'll see how things go Stay tuned..
