Popular Post steven newman
Ok...Proper name, as I spelled it wrong....Peter Follansbee, of Plimouth Plantation. Might just go as a standing desk....or, something one can sit at? May build either the desk unit first, or the base...and size things from there.... p_toad, Cal, Artie and 2 others
Popular Post DAB
measurements? we don't need no stinking measurements. length? about yeah long (about as far as your hands can reach.) depth? about as far as you can reach forward with one hand. height? grab a seat, how far from the floor to your belly button. that should work. it's your table, build it to fit you. Popular Post steven newman
Hmmm...a drawing of a base unit has been made, this morning. Grandson #3 needs a computer desk..... Instead of a solid panel for the top of the base....will use 3" wide boards, in a picture frame sort of top, mitered at the corners.... Width of the top of the base...32" Depth is 19". From the bottom edge of the aprons to the floor = 29". Will be leg stretchers....maybe on the lines of the Rachel Standing Desk. Hutch/ slant top desk? Instead of the sloped lid open at the top....will hinge it at the bottom, to allow a keyboard a place to sit. As to what will be INSIDE....remains to be seen... You are more than welcome to stop in at the shop...and help out.. Trying to bring this... Into the Computer Age...stay tuned. Yabbut: the Ark measurements in "cubits" used the distance of elbow to fingertip (= cubit), and that would vary a bit with the individual, so "about as far as your hands can reach" seems to fit right in! :-) MaDeuce, HARO50, Artie and 3 others
DAB
the common cubit was indeed elbow to finger tip. about 18" for most people. but, the royal cubit was the common cubit PLUS one hand (width of you hand, not including your thumb, about 4" for most people), so that came out to about 22". somewhat analogous to the Guinea in Britain. it was a pound plus a shilling. it was a way to quote prices for professional services, and add about 8% (12 shillings to a pound) without having to quote a larger sum in pounds. Popular Post steven newman
Roh-kay, Raggy....paperwork is started... Have a decent enough stash of lumber.. Decided to haul a few items to the shop...including that 2 x 4 x 8' chunk..cleaned off the bench.. Need to clean the saw off, as well.. Hmmm, may need to haul the trash can out to the firepit..soon. One end of the 2 x 4 was a bit nasty.. Knot went almost all the way through, too... Looks like firewood. Cut two good sections @ 31" long ( I think.. ) Needed to move the saw around, add the rip fence, set it up at 1-1/2" strong and rip things down.. Made a bit of trim stock, too Never know when I might need these... Got a chance to try out the "new" vise, and the new dogs.. The 62 is to clean up after the Big Guy... Stanley No. 6c, Type 10. Tried the 7c...was a bit too much. Planed all 16 faces smooth and square.... Got them all done, THEN remembered I had a fan.....would have saved me dripping on the work... Need to trim the ends square, yet. Even the nose was dripping on everything...time to sweep up, call it a day. Trying to save one plank back.. So when you open the lid to use the keyboard...this grain is what will show. We'll see....stay tuned.. Popular Post steven newman
Well...I was just going to haul the next plank to the shop.....WAS...crosscut the plank a couple times...set up the rip fence... 2 long aprons, and 2 short aprons. Reset the fence to 3/4"...or so and ran that 2 x 4 through a few times... Will make a few stretchers, with a long one as a foot rest. Was just going to lay out for tenons.. 1/2 pint can of stain to mark a curve...and... Tried to match with a second short apron...used one of these to help lay out on two more.. Spokeshave, plane, beltsander to get these all to almost match each other...I did set up the tenon machine.. May have to move the bandsaw a bit, to get the long aprons done... got to this point, Mother nature decided I was needed upstairs,,, Maybe tomorrow, I can get a wee bit done Stay tuned.. Popular Post steven newman
2 hours in the shop, this afternoon...had to stop for supper.. I even remembered to turn the shop fan on, this time Ok, set up the mitersaw... Half the cuts needed this arrangement to hold the parts steady....also set up a stop block... Once the first cut was to where I needed it...I could set the depth stops.. Which is what is holding the saw up. Everything about these tenons involves one setting on the combo square 1/2" tenon. Rather than keep resetting the square for the 1/4" marks... Square is set to 1/2". By going across the 3/4" thick apron, I get a 1/4" line for the other side of the tenon ( clear as mud, right?) Mitersaw cuts down to the stops..usually..( back depth stop was being...difficult ) Shoulder cuts are done....cheek cuts were next.... Again, using that same setting on the square...then just run the backsaw ( wax the blade, thumb left to help guide the cut) Clean up with a wide sharp chisel....two more cuts to do Again, that square makes the lay out marks...back saw and a chisel to notch the ends...somehow managed to get all 8 tenons done.. Still need tenons on the two short stretchers..that I need to make...had to square the ends of the legs, and make sure they were at least close to the same lengths.. One leg needed a plane, to reduce a bulged side...next step involved a different sort of plane.. Set it up to mill a few beads...along the outside corners. Got to use the dogs again...had the depth a tad deep, once that was fixed Set these aside...dug up the mortise jig... Went to screw the jig down....none of the cordless drivers worked, all the batteries were DOA Suppertime...may head back down later....seems I forgot to make the stretchers... I guess I do that next time... Will do the long stretcher/ foot rest, once the base is glued up....then I can lay out a dovetail connection on each end. Hmmm, one or two foot rests maybe a space between them? Stay tuned... Harry Brink, p_toad, Cal and 4 others
