Popular Post Nickp 943
I have finally joined the ranks of the "willing unemployed"...I have retired as of Friday, August 31, (somewhere around two days ago) I have been advised I am now a "probie"...an intern in the fine art of retirement. I have acquired two mentors...(names withheld to protect the innocent but Colorado and Florida won't let the cats out of the same bag) My mentors tell me I need to practice the fine arts of nothing, later, nap, procrastinate, nothing, later, nap, repeat... As a probie I am to learn how not to tell time...or accurately note the current day...or how many days have past since some incident...or how many days in the future something is to occur (except doctor's appointments). Also, don't make "to do" lists...rather, make "don't do" lists... So I plead with you now to help accelerate my exit from "probie-dom"...not sure what the next stage is as my mentors feel I am not yet ready... Any advice in speeding up my studies is appreciated...so I can make my mentors proud... What should I do to break out of "probie" to full fledged "retired"... Thank you in advance (but not too far in advance) Gene Howe, Ron Altier, Cal and 10 others 3 9 1 Quote Link to post

WTB they won't want to ''sponsor'' anyone else because you'll be handful and make them be busy witch won't set well w/ them...... 4... You left out eating, sex and fishing... 5... procrastination is a good thing... it gives you something to do tomorrow and nothing to do today... 6... when you are clueless as to what a day/date group is,,, you have overcome a major hurdle... 7... the reminders are done by others... they ain't retired... 8... NO!!! that's still doing... 2 hours ago, Nickp said: not sure what the next stage is as my mentors feel I am not yet ready... drop all those projects you mentioned that need doing like a hot rock... and... check in every so often... we need to know if you fell off of the wagon and support needs to be rallied... Popular Post Ron Altier 7,994
Congratulations!! I waited 38 years for that day and know that feeling really well. Ease into it like taking a nap, that is a great way to start. hatuffej, HARO50, LarryS and 2 others 2 3 Quote Link to post

schnewj 4,889
@Nickp Well, PROBIE, I'm glad to see you are listening. I know it's a big change, but you'll ease into it just fine. However, to that end, you will need to modify your vocabulary, slightly. We'll start off easy... Can you say, MONYANA? This is Spanish for tomorrow. Learn it well. Tomorrow, (monyana) you will be expected to use it in a complete sentence. Something like...oh, OK, I'll get to that monyana, but right now I need a nap. Popular Post HandyDan 92,829
My recommended day in retirement life. Get out of bed at 8:00AM Screw around on the computer until 12:00Noon Decide what to do today with the understanding that I am still five hours ahead of the time I usually got home from work. I can get something done but what's the rush. Tomorrow has the same options. DuckSoup, LarryS, Fred W. Hargis Jr and 6 others 3 6 Quote Link to post
Popular Post Smallpatch 9,070
When I retired there were four things I quit doing, wearing a watch, combing my hair, tying my shoes and the forth thing was not buttoning my britches or not zipping my pants depending on what part of the country you might call home. Then later on I found in the winter buttoning up had its options. Edited September 4, 2018 by Smallpatch p_toad, LarryS, Grandpadave52 and 2 others 5 Quote Link to post

Popular Post Grandpadave52 20,648
Somehow missed this yesterday and most of today...but I'm retired so I didn't notice until now. CONGRATULATIONS NICK!!! Welcome to the dark side. On 9/3/2018 at 7:10 PM, Nickp said: I have finally joined the ranks of the "willing unemployed"...I have retired as of Friday, August 31, (somewhere around two days ago) As time rolls on, the exact day, time of this event fades....mostly b/c you don't want to remind yourself that it tool that long to do. I have been advised I am now a "probie"...an intern in the fine art of retirement. Only if you view yourself as "semi-retired" by seeking other paying gigs even if they are part-time (gambler, hit man or philosopher excluded) I have acquired two mentors...(names withheld to protect the innocent but Colorado and Florida won't let the cats out of the same bag) Under NO circumstances, I repeat, under NO circumstance, send them prepaid debit cards, money orders, cash, or any personal information for their services helping you to transition into retirement...Remember, "If it sounds to good to be true" it's probably an off-shore, above 7500' genuine scam...this is especially true if they promise you a date with beautiful models named Lucy My mentors tell me I need to practice the fine arts of nothing, later, nap, procrastinate, nothing, later, nap, repeat... See response immediately above...best to nap lightly with one eye open for a while...be leery of any stray dogs that might show up particularly if they have one or two horses with them. That being said though, don't develop a bad habit of making the bed just b/c you're up for a few minutes. As a probie I am to learn how not to tell time...or accurately note the current day...or how many days have past since some incident...or how many days in the future something is to occur (except doctor's appointments). Also, don't make "to do" lists...rather, make "don't do" lists... Don't be scammed with notion. It is absolutely imperative to keep track of some days & months...always remember Walgreen's and Big R offer Senior discounts the first Tuesday of every month. Get involved with your community...learn which local restaurants offer "Early Bird, Senior Discounts...As for the lists...worthless IMO...never can find them after you've made them so TWOT. So I plead with you now to help accelerate my exit from "probie-dom"...not sure what the next stage is as my mentors feel I am not yet ready... As for the next stage...we don't talk about that...EVER. Assume retirement is a perpetual state which is always evolving...once the newness wears off, you'll find you'll have little respect or compassion for others who have to adhere to some sort of schedule...when you've reached that grasshopper, you are in full retirement dress...speaking of dress, see @Smallpatch's suggestions above. Any advice in speeding up my studies is appreciated...so I can make my mentors proud... WHOA there there partner...now let's don't rush things here...stop and think how long it took you to get here...take some time to get to know your surroundings, find the things you bought 10, 20, 30 years ago which you felt you needed when this day came...get a cup of coffee once in a while, grab a lawn chair and sit at the end of your driveway at 4 in the morning just b/c you can...let the neighbors wonder all day what you're up to...then when they're off to work or wherever they go...remember that bed you didn't hastily make? What should I do to break out of "probie" to full fledged "retired"... Most important of all things to remember...Retirement is not all that it's said to be! It's FAR BETTER THAN THAT! Enjoy every minute of it...don't get do-overs on this one. Thank you in advance (but not too far in advance) Please review the messages below.
