Popular Post steven newman
Well, last night, went a cut a couple dozen plugs. . Might be enough? Got out the tools to install these things.. Screwdriver to "pop" the plugs out. Hammer to set the plugs into the holes, and drive the chisel. Plane and chisel to trim the plugs flush, once the glue is set. When I pop the plug out, I grab the fat end, line up the plug's grain with my thumb. Coat the narrow end with a bit of glue, and drive the plug in as far as it will go. Trying to match the grain directions. Worked my way down the case, even had to tip the case back, so I could reach the bottom holes.. Had just enough plugs, too.. Will let this sit a while, cleaned off the bench.. And hauled two of the 1 x 10s to the shop.. Hmmmm, top one was the "better looking" of the two...6' long, made a cut at the 3' mark.. And set these two aside. Will be the sides of the bookcase. Went with 1 x 10s, no glue-ups needed to get them wide enough... As for that other wood shaped object...Cut it into three pieces..23" long. You'd think that since they all came from the same board, they would be the same size? Nope. Ganged the 3 into a block..jointed one edge.. Saws weren't working to well ( maybe operator?) so I had to plane the ends straight, as well. Not perfect, but the sliding dovetail cuts will take care of that. Left this mess sit, still clamped up, hoping it pulls the warp out... Ok, messed around long enough with these, glue had set up, time to trim things to size.. The "trimmers" Used the chisel bevel down, one whack with the hammer..waste flies off.. If I use the chisel bevel up, it tends to dig in a bit.....Popped all the plugs off, then came back with the block plane and leveled things out.. Will need to come back with a chisel, and clean up the beads a bit..Drawer was sliding a bit too far into the case. Added a screw to the back of each drawer side. NOW I can adjust how far in the drawer will slide... Will let this set, while I build a bookcase for the upper unit...BTW.. "What plugs?" Stopped for the day..shakes were back. Waiting on a call from a Brain Doctor to see when I can get in. No tumours, but there is a couple spots in there they don't like...will see what they want to do.. Grandpadave52
Pretty good day I'd say. Really beginning to take shape. Sorry to hear symptoms have returned. Just curious, have you been checked for diabetes? While I'm considered pre-diabetic, I know if I don't eat or eat properly during the day, I can get pretty shaky late afternoon. Just a thought. Prayers & thoughts for good news! Cal, HARO50, steven newman and 1 other
Popular Post Larry Schweitzer
One of the first signs of diabetes is having to pee really often. Trust me you don't want to become diabetic! Been there, am that. Family history of it? Over weight? You can check your blood glucose with a cheap meter from Wal-Mart, $15, Test strips $9 for 50. If it has been more than 4 hours since you ate your reading should be in the range of 70 to 120 "normal." If you check an hour after you ate it shouldn't be over 185. I've got half dozen meters mostly Wal-Mart a couple of expensive ones from big name drug companies that give very similar readings to the cheap Wal-Mart ones. Take care of that body, they don't sell replacements. Grandpadave52, HARO50, p_toad and 2 others 4
Popular Post steven newman
Last readings I had were at 110. 29 MAR I'm going over to Columbus , OH to see a brain doctor....will see what he says, then.. Doing supper right now...running the router around now, doing sliding dovetail joints to connect the sides to the shelves....film later tonight, in case anyone wants... Picked up the LAST little can of minwax Golden Oak stain, today....will see how it turns out.... p_toad, Cal, Grandpadave52 and 2 others
Al B
Steve, I don't know how you do it. You manage to spend more time in the shop when you're not feeling well than I could while feeling great. Hope your MRI results show your issues can be taken care of without surgery. I've been treated by an Endochronologist for the past 4 years with pills for a 13mm (approx 7/8" diameter) sized growth on the pituitary gland. Pills were supposed to shrink the growth. That didn't happen, but they did stabilize it so that the growth hasn't further enlarged.Your woodworking is obviously your motivation, but do get the rest you need. We want you around here for a long time to come, but more than that your family wants you with them. Popular Post steven newman
Trying to get this project done BEFORE they decide what they are going to do.... Yesterday..Phone Tag all morning.....Boss wanted to go shopping all afternoon...( hour long nap in the van) Then finally a bit of shop time, after supper.. THE last can of Golden Oak in Wall E World....I found a use for those shelf blanks while they were clamped up.. Old work belt I use to strop sharpened edges. Green stick to "charge" the surface. Ok..put all of this out of the way. Mark the two side blanks as to inside, top, bottom and back..clamp one to the side of the bench.. And made sure the Wards 78 was set up just right ( was set a tad too deep.) If you don't have a sore left thumb, you ain't holding it right....That shaving is 3' long, made a mess on the floor.. This was after one board..but.. Needed this done to both of the side blanks first. Needed to figure the width of the shelves. and this rebate is hard to do when the case is assembled. Got both rebates done. Set one aside ( over on the Boss's washer..ooops) and lay out the shelf spacing. Used a piece of scrap to mark how thick the shelves were, and then a center point.. Just for "scale"...these boards are 1 x10s.. Got out the router bit, and a router guide jig.. But I needed a line to set the guide to. Measured from the center of the router's collet, out to the edge of the base...a hair under 3" Marked a line to set the fence to.. Clamp the board to the bench, clamp the fence to the line.. Double check for square, hammer to adjust, if need be. Run the router.. Repeat for the other two slots....use this completed side to layout the other side's slots.. All I needed was the line for the fence. The larger square helped with that ( Stanley No. 20, 12" square) Then cut the other three slots. Hopefully, they line up So, I had these done, needed to cut matching "pins" to fit into these.. I put away the sides, and the fence. Got out the edge guide the router came with. Set it to just short of the center of the dovetail bit. Brought that clamped up stack of shelves to the side of the bench, and moved the clamps a bit. One to clamp the stack TO the bench, bottom of the stack sits on the lower shelf of the bench. Ran the router along the outside edges of the stack...reset the guide to cut between two boards and made two more cuts...even though the router kept trying to snag it's own cord...three pins got done.. Turn this thing over, and repeat. I left the guide alone for the first two passes, then reset back to do the outside passes.. Then came the "FUN" of banging these into place in the sides....Big hammer & Block of Maple trick. Did not add any glue. I figure the plywood back and the face frame should hold the shelves in place. I checked the last 1 x 10 I have ....LARGE knot in the center of the 6' long plank has caused a problem.. Not a biggie, looks like face frame parts, to me..will cut the knot causing this split out. The part that isn't split further down will get trimmed for the top of the case. May add a strip to the back edge to get the 5/8" overhang I want....that is..5/8" over hang with the 3/4" thick face frame added....Maybe a 2" wide piece...hmmmmm. Need to figure out the blank for the raised panel in the door, again...depends on the width of the face frame, plus the width of the frame for the door. Have two of those "freckled" boards left, will add some plain trim to accent the fancy stuff... Stay tuned Cal, Gene Howe, p_toad and 5 others

Popular Post steven newman
Today's follies......Plank was hauled to the shop....found a clear stretch that was long enough to make the top of the bookcase with....thought I'd try a different handsaw.. About an inch into the cross cut..it was clear Mr. Richardson needed it's teeth sharpened up.....eh, not today, ok? Went back to the Disston Operator still needs a bit of practice....needed a 1 x 4 cut the same length. need the extra width for the top's overhang..Once that was cut, time to joint a few edges... Clamp the two together, where the matching edges will be. Once done, I can swing "shorty" around and onto the bigger one, like a book.. Bead of glue, moosh the narrpw board around a bit, until I feel it "stick", then a few clamps and a caul.. Then set this mess aside. Needed to set up the bandsaw, needed a few 1 x 2 pieces cut, from the remains of that knotty board... Needed to reset the rip guide, and move a few things out of the line of traffic,,,,first rip cut, set to 1-5/8" width, was too bad....marked the second cut.. Was having issues with following the cut line..finally the blade hopped off the wheels. I seemed to think I had broken the 1/4" blade...so I went old school I have three such saws, this one seemed to do the best following the lines. Disston made for Sears, Craftsman Special Edition saw... Well, that was almost all the Cardio for today...clamped the two stiles together, after cutting them to final length...and jointed their edges.. Knot hole will be to the inside of the case. Edges were square, sawn ends square...Getting tuckered out. call it a day. Maybe tomorrow, I can get the rails made for the face frame, and clean up the top's panel. Stay tuned.. p_toad, DuckSoup, lew and 3 others

Popular Post steven newman
Showed up about 10:00 am, left at 1:00pm....couple planes tuned up so they will work, couple chisels fixed. LOTS of tips on how I work in the Dungeon. Boss then wanted to go to the store....so, I did a bit off shopping myself.. NEW beltsander, a NEW bandsaw blade...Found another small can of Golden Oak stain. Picked two almost clear 1 x 4 x 4' Pine boards, and a 1/4" x 2' x 4' plywood panel. Van was a quart low, filled that. Then, took an hour nap while she was shopping at Wall E World....Dodge does make some VERY comfy seats... Not too bad of a day? and very little woodworking was involved.....we did remove the clamps from the case's top, and used that panel to show how to use a plane to level a panel.... sneaky? Got the toys put away....I can at least see the top of the bench...again For at least a day. Maybe tomorrow, I can do a bit of work? steven newman
Between the morning's work in the shop, afternoon of the Boss's shopping trip, and then another trip to the shop...might have got something done, today.. Changed out the bandsaw blade. Ripped a 1 x 4 down. Ran this thing around.. Actually..I ran both of these....ran a #22 bead cutter around a few parts.. Also this morning, figured out how wide to make the top of the case, and ripped the extra off.. Clamped the stiles in place.. Had to move things around a bit. needed a bit more room for my fat body....I wanted to mark the rails for length.. Better too long, than way too short, eh. More layout lines, and a bit of work at the bandsaw.. To make these ends. Then use these to lay out and cut the stiles.. Then dig a few holes.. Until a test fit.. Close...got all four joints done, and a dry fit.. One tenon was a hair too long. Trimmed that a bit....then spread some glue and added a few clamps Will let this sit awhile.( while I peel glue off my fingers..) Joints looked decent , enough.. Not too hateful? As for those sliding dovetails... No glue was used on it, either....I might be getting the hang of these? Need to finish the top, and install the back panel.....and install this face frame....maybe tomorrow? Stay tuned... Grandpadave52
Whew...I'd say you had a pretty good day. Looks like you've about maxed out your shop height with this one.
