Merry Christmas to all Patriot Woodworkers and guests alike. So, here we are, a day after Christmas and I completely forgot to get our Monday topic live, as I do weekly. I also did not get our Monday topic up the last two weeks as I have been very ill, I have finally dug out of the flu fog the last few days and I actually felt great for Christmas. I'd like to say thank you to all for being here, and sharing your lives and shops with us, we are forever grateful for the folks who keep our forums live and interesting. And we hope you all have a very Merry Christmas! Under the Christmas Tree So Patriot Woodworkers, what did you all get under the tree this Christmas, I'll go ahead and kick it off! My family purchased this wonderful restored fully usable set and sharpened Warranted Superior saw for me, this is a beaut! I love it. They also presented me with this wonderful old book all about North American woods and trees, and their use in the trades and crafts woodworking industry. I love these old books, I use them as a resource for our Patriot Woodwiki that we have been building, and the family knows I love to read these books. I can't get enough of them. This books was copyright is 1951 and it is still viable today, why wouldn't it be, trees have not changed in the last 60 years have they? The book is called American Woods, and was written by Shelley E. Schoonover (Regional Fiscal Agent (retired) United States Forest Service). So that was my haul of the day, what did Santa bring you all! Chips N Dust
I finally got some time in the shop this weekend and hung 1/2 of my new lights. WOW! Very bright. I think I will like the lighting very much when I am finished. Cal, steven newman and John Morris
DAB
made a back scratcher out of Lacewood scrap i had laying around. boxed up, shipping tomorrow to a friend. see separate thread for more. stocked my wife's newly completed craft center with some basic tools so she doesn't have to keep borrowing mine for simple tasks. checked the fireplace chimney today for blockage, wasn't getting a good draw. try again tonight. slight amount of soot on the mesh over the top of the flue. cleaned that off. dirty job. need to design and make a bowl, includes figuring out what wood to use. got some nice presents from my wife and others for Christmas. and now i get to pay quarterly taxes and bills. it's more fun buying stuff than paying for it. in the coming weeks i'll start planning my office remodel (converted bedroom). bookcases, new desk, layout and furniture placement. sounds like work. too cold to go shooting. bullets would freeze and decide they didn't want to hit the target. kmealy
most of the gifts I got were for the shop -- new drill/driver+impact kit, "From Truth to Tools" book, and a nice dust mask. I got to open the new shop vacuum last week to get ahead of off the dust on the floor. Only fair, most of the gifts I got my wife were for her sewing room. Popular Post Grandpadave52
Friday, changed the oil/filter, serviced my truck, hooked up the trailer, checked it over, loaded 20 bale of straw and hauled home and unloaded...quite surprised to find it was wire tied bales vs string...my back and shoulders were more surprised on Saturday... Saturday, once everyone was gone, I had to dig a grave for my wife's West Highland terrier, Chloe, who died late Thursday afternoon. She was a couple of months short of 14 y/o. I suspect she had a stroke; four years to the exact day my border collie died. The border collie was rescued from our local pound when she was ~ 9 months old...she was 3+ when we rescued Chloe at ~ 9 mo old from a terrible life in the city in Ft. Wayne. The "partners" in crime now rest side-by-side once again...First time we've been without a dog around in nearly 40 years. Thanks Sadie & Chloe Photo ~10 years old...Not to worry, the ground-squirrel trapped in the downspout extension between them escaped unscathed scampering up the Oak tree behind them only to provide a couple repeat performances later on... The cat finally put an end to all of it by scoring a kill on the ground squirrel. Didn't keep them both from peering into the spout from time-to-time though. Dollied the trailer, put some other things away...went to town to finish my Christmas shopping...good thing too; even after sleeping in the recliner with a heating pad all night, I was less than mobile Sunday morning...then the snow came, then the wind. I moved snow around for a couple hours late Sunday afternoon, then hauled and placed Christmas gifts from vehicles, garage and other hiding spots after midnight until about 1:45 AM Christmas morning...more recliner & heating pad with an Aleve chaser along with visions of settling down for a long winter nap; 3-1/2 & 6-1/2 y/o grandsons apparently don't sleep in on Christmas mornings in real life. Finally got a nap in late Christmas day...suspect a winter cold is slowly moving in now...Big shot of Theraflu as a nitecap forecast for tonight. Big gift was having everyone here and healthy for Christmas even if it was VERY noisy; my wife re-created her mother's vegetable beef soup for the evening meal. It was my favorite gift each year to receive a couple quarts of that soup for Christmas from my MIL...brought back a lot of fond memories...enjoyed a second round for lunch today...left-overs won't make it to the end of the week. Kids seem to be well pleased with their gifts...I hauled two truck loads of recycling this AM while shuttling girls to/from morning swim practice...more shuttling the remainder of the week...no shop work in he forecast for the next 10 days or so since daily high temps will be lucky to make it to double digits and nightly lows hovering around double digits on the wrong side of zero; 83 days until Spring p_toad, HARO50, steven newman and 2 others
Al B
Managed to move a bit of snow, not because it was what I really wanted to do. Low temperatures will be keeping me indoors as much as possible for at least the next few days. The prime rib planned for Christmas went bad so we all joined together and ordered Chinese for dinner. The food was delicious. Gifts this year were all about the great grand kids. Planning to get some of the doc's ordered R&R. I was very curious, because even with the relatively high price tag on a rib roast, it's one of the easiest and hardiest cuts to roast successfully, we do a rib roast for Christmas every year too. I am not the best cook and even I can roast it successfully, but the fact that yours was just plain ol smelly before it even went into the oven, well you all struck out before the rub was even applied! A little known secret in our home on dealing with sour meat, my wife came from very meager means as a child and young adult, she was raised in a very small concrete home in Panama, with a brother, and two sisters, dad drove taxi, and mom stayed home as is tradition there, and sometimes things would go bad in the old fridge due to the constant power outages etc, or poorly packed meat from the butcher, their answer was to salt it down then cook it! My wife still does that to this day, I get on her about it sometimes, but hey, we are all still alive, and healthy, so I don't question her style all that much! Most the time if it smells a tad sour, it's just the juice on top that went bad, when it's rinsed off it smells fine, of course you can only use the salt method if it's just a tad soured meat, sounds like your rib may have been well on its way and beyond redemption. Another trick my wife was taught growing up, you see they never threw anything away, if the food was too bad, it went to the chickens or the dogs, but before they sent it to the animals, the family had to try to save it, when it came to milk that turned sour or even into cottage cheese, they would pour the bad milk into a bowl, and mix it with sugar, and then pour the soured milk and sugar mixture into an ice tray, and they made dairy pops! It's hot in Panama, and those dairy pops from sour milk and sugar, were actually pretty danged good. Just musing here Al, hey, Chinese food is a great holiday meal! Al B
I'm no cook John and never actually saw the prime rib. I probably wouldn't have known the difference. Was really looking forward to the prime rib, but the chinese food was great. I couldn't believe how many people have chinese food for Christmas. The place was wall to wall people. I wonder if it has anything to do with the re-emerging popularity of the hit "Christmas Story" movie? p_toad, Cal and Al B

schnewj
When I was married we always did a standing rib roast for Christmas...Chinese was always New Years Eve. I'm surprised to see that others are on the same wavelength for the holiday meals.
Gene Howe
For the last 16 years, ever since our sons had Dan the Lobster Man ship us a lobster for Christmas, we've done the surf and turf thing. A standing rib roast and, depending on the size of the guest list, a couple or three lobsters or a quantity of just tails. This year we changed it up. Bought a couple dozen home made tamales, cooked up some rice with lime and cilantro, home made refried beans, tortillas and several different salads. To top it off, Phyl made her, from scratch, lemon and chocolate cream pies. It was delicious. I missed the lobster, though. Allen Worsham
Tami and I flew into Nashville on December 24th and we have been enjoying our time looking at different communities around the perimeter of Nashville about 20-40 miles. Today we drove to Memphis and went to Graceland which was a lot of fun but cold in the 20's. We will be having dinner tonight with an old friend of Tami's in about half an hour at a BBQ place. Tomorrow we will head to Bowling Green Kentucky. Glad I got some thermal undies with this cold weather. p_toad, HARO50, Chips N Dust and 1 other
