Popular Post steven newman
Ok, a two-parter.... IF you like.... Part one...argued with the bandsaw, again.....trying to resaw blanks for around the panel for the door... 1/2" blade was duller than...threw it away. Only one left was a 1/4" wide one. Still had a wavy cut....had to gang the rails together and jointer them straight. Then the stiles were jointed. Got out the Stanley 45 again to plough a few grooves.. Was a bit shallow...reset a bit deeper...got the two rails done.. The little white ball is an old candle. After a couple passes to start the grooves, I rub the candle along the cut...speeds things up...I reset the jig a bit, to plough the grooves in the stiles.. Was walking around on ankle deep crunchies.. Finally got to where I could set things up, and figure the size of the panel needed.. Got this far last night...was getting a bit too tired.....was a busy day Part 2? Early start today. Had to haul the last two planks to the shop. needed to cross cut them @ 28" or so long. Got four slabs. Width needed to be 18-3/4" or so....three boards weren't wide enough, four was a bit too wide....Made a mark, to rip the worst section off of one plank... Boards needed S4S....none were exactly straight, edges needed jointed..cupped faces needed flattened... I think I should have fired up that fan...shavings were piling up, everywhere.. Got the edges jointed.. I'd get a couple edges done, then check for any gaposis.. Not concerned about the ends...will square things up after the glue up...Even the narrow strip was planed... Needed a bit more work on the left end...finally got all the edges to match up....time to spread some glue... I'd spread a decent bead along one edge, bring the next board over, slide the board back and forth to set the glue, and then do the next joint...first one never moved. Was able to glue all four pieces together, without any falling apart.. Couple of "extra hands" in the vise, and a c clamp.... Then, added cauls on the ends.. The entire morning, I only used that one plane. Millers Falls #14. It made even more of a mess... than I made last night...and I know I swept the floor, last night I even swept the floor, twice this morning, before this showed up I am completely soaked, everything I move starts to cramp......I think this will do for today.....tomorrow I can raise a panel, and build the door....might even install it? We'll see. Camera Battery is sitting in it's charger....might have worn it out, too Stay tuned.... Popular Post steven newman
I suppose I had better catch up on today's misadventures? Cussing was bad enough to make a Marine blush..... Got the clamps off, and set up to square the ends... Little Skil circular saw to make the cuts....removed the saw guide, and tried to flatten the faces of the panel.. I remembered to turn another tool on... Because..either the shop is too warm, or..I am working way too hard..for a Saturday... Got the faces flat as I could..meh....laid things out to start raising the panel.. 1-1/2" in from the edge. Goal is to bevel the end grain until the bevel erases this line....I used both a Millers Falls #14 and a Stanley #4c The jack to hog most of the stuff off, the smoother to finesse things. I do the end grain first, plane runs at a diagonal to the grain. I do both ends, that way, any blow out will be erased when the next bevels are done... Goal here is to get a 45 degree corner detail.. Almost there, needs to come right to the corner. Ok, got all the bevels done, panel is a bit too thick, yet..we have ways Still set up from doing the other panel. This is for the end grain ends... Noisey thing....did a dry fit, to see if it will fit.. Then the other end grain end was done. Did not feel like messing with the nicker on the 78, so I set up the Stanley45 to do the long grain edges Shoulder plane to clean things up, if need be. Got the long grain edges done, and a dry fit.. Then a bit of Mortise & tenon work.. Had to go back, and readjust one rebate,,Grrrrrr (cussing has begun) as I was trying to glue this mess together....Finally.. Had to add a bunch of cauls, to keep the joints flat....more cussing required.. Will let this mess sit a day. When it does come out of the clamps...I have something to add to those corners.. Yep, was a bit shaky by this time....one bracket on the inside of each corner. Then I can fit the door to it's opening. Maybe even add a few hinges? We'll see how this goes....stay tuned... steven newman
Door came out of the clamps.....tried adding the corner brackets....even with pilot holes, I was snapping every other screw off. Finally got that done...went to fit the door into the opening...was too wide..grrrrr, bandsaw to rip the excess off.....door was too short...ripped another piece to act as a filler across the top edge.....Hinges? More screws snapped off....drill bit in the Vix bit snapped off as well ( had to dig that out of the hole...grrr) Cussing level was about ..12, on a scale of 1-10....This thing was getting installed, one way or another.... Added a spring catch to keep the dang thing closed had to drill two scraps of Walnut, to get enough of these plugs.. Basic tool kit for installing plugs...screwdriver to "pop" each one out, coat of glue on the smaller end, and hammer them home.. Still need 6 installed in the top of the bookcase, but... That is a LONG way up there....Need to install a spring catch for the bottom door..someday. Won't be today.....shop is closed. Need to go out shopping today..plywood for the back of the book case, a can of shellac...and one more knob, to match the others.... Then sand the "H" out of this thing....before the finish is even started...wasn't a "good day" all around. Mom was taken to the Hospital Sunday...she fell and broke an arm...will be taking her to the rehab center, today....yep, Sunday wasn't a very good day Maybe Tuesday will be better? steven newman
Was a "Clean break" on her arm.....they are taking good care of her. She also has a bump on the head, from the fall. Right now, my knees do NOT like this weather,,,,makes me want to sit around too much... Nose is full of shellac smells.... So, how about a few pictures of today's follies? Plywood panel, to use as the back of the bookcase. Have it cut to length, waiting on shellac to dry before I attach this. Have to turn the entire unit around Need to close that view up...plane and chisel to level the plugs.. Then sand the heck out of things. I got the knob installed... Went and gave everything a coat of amber shellac.. Except for the top of the case...can't get up there to see what I am doing. First coat is on....may get a couple more coats. Need to do the inside of the door. And install the back About ready to move this thing to it's new home. a few more coats of finish, a latch for the bottom door...and call it done. Will post a "gallery" when it is ready. Stay tuned HARO50, Gerald, Grandpadave52 and 1 other

Popular Post steven newman
Ok, I think this project is about ..done. Back is on, last of the coats of shellac are on....time for that Final PIP? Ready? I am 5'11", and this thing is taller than I am. Open both doors... No, it did not tip over. Bottom shelves will be full of "Household Tools" no need for shellac on them... Side view? Open the drawer.. Might be the last time it will be this clean... Maybe, one of these days, I might get good at hand cut, half blind dovetails.....maybe? Hinge details, and some Walnut plugs. As for where this project will sit? First I have to clean the spot out... 9' ceilings in this room. Cabinet is going into the corner on the left of the chimney. Most of this mess will get stashed...somewhere. Most are the Household Tools. No longer need the Kennel. Hopefully,I don't need that snowshovel much longer, either. Figured I used 45 bft of Ash, a 4' x 4' panel of 1/4" plywood.....and a few odds and ends. Not too bad of a Project, thanks for following along.. Grandpadave52
Nicely done Steven...Looks like it's new location will be the cat's meow. Make sure you get help to get it up there. I'm sure you plan to separate the top from the base before the move right? steven newman
steven newman
Yep, there are cleats to hold the top in place, remove four screws, and the top comes off. Have a three person crew to do the moving....and I am not part of it...just the foreman.... p_toad, HARO50, Gene Howe and 1 other 2
steven newman
Due to a "complaint" about the "open area" between the two units...I had to do a little extra today.. Had a bit of leftover Ash, so I made a simple drawer......slide it back in.. There is a stop, around back, set to where the drawer looks good closed up. Picked up a couple latches today, and cleaned out the spot for the cupboard to sit in.. Now, I just have to clean my bench..again See how many toys you can ID in that mess....(broom doesn't count..) Grandpadave52
Nice addition with the drawer although I though it looked good prior. If you haven't already You may want to add some nylon or plastic glides to drawer bottom sides; will help minimize scarring to the lower unit top. Just sayin' 1 hour ago, steven newman said: See how many toys you can ID in that mess....(broom doesn't count..) The one that obviously is missing is @lew's mallet...haven't seen that on projects of late; in the vault? steven newman and HARO50 1
