Popular Post steven newman
Two days, two sales...meh. Stopped at Brandt,OH.....was just looking for a few parts.....found something else, instead... Has a span of just over 6", $5 each. Might be the same maker? No names on them. More to finish a "set", as I already had this one.. Fifty cents about a month ago.....has Great Neck for a maker. Just about the same size, as the new pair. Today, another road trip, another BARN SALE! Hey, the compass even had a pencil! Will complete the set. For some reason, I just can't turn down a North Bros. Yankee. Not sure what the eggbeater is....a few drops of 3in1 oil, and it was humming right along. There was one other item... Should last a while? These for items were...$5 total. Now, I just need to find out WHO made the drill.... Fred W. Hargis Jr, Gerald, p_toad and 2 others

I know the feeling...must be a vitamin deficiency or something You probably wouldn't have bought it if it didn't have the screwdriver bit in it. 1 hour ago, steven newman said: Not sure what the eggbeater is....a few drops of 3in1 oil, and it was humming right along. IT kinda' looks like a Millers-Falls? Very similar to one I bought last winter...is the maker name on the flywheel crank between the knob and the first screw? Mine was hard to see until I buffed some rust. Nice haul overall especially on the dividers & inside calipers + the compass. p_toad and steven newman
steven newman
There IS a Millers Falls style label on the crank wheel....Need to get a better/ closer look at the chuck. The "Yankee" is a bit...odd. No selector was ever on it. Instead of the North Bros. Yankee stuff....there is a Craftsman Made in USA stamp. Handle shape is odd as well. Unable to free up the screwdriver tip, may have to give it a good soaking.... p_toad and Grandpadave52
steven newman
Apparently, that drill is a Millers falls, but was made in Germany. Still researching the Yankee screwdriver. p_toad, Grandpadave52 and HARO50
steven newman
Yankee was made for Craftsman by Millers Falls. Seems the fluted handle was a Craftsman option. After three days of soaking in PBBlaster.....tip hasn't so much as wiggled....it be stuck in there good! Right by the knurled ring that releases the shaft....there is a knurled cylinder/grip. You rotate it one way to go forward, rotate it back the other way to reverse the tip. Stop about half way in-between, and it locks the shaft. It was nickle plated....mostly gone now, leaving brass behind. BTW: That spring inside works VERY good..... Popular Post steven newman
Did a walk-about today.....checked out a "New" Antique place and an old standby......One of the stalls in the "standby" Antique mall Had a few (6!) hand planes....place a Stanley No.4c on hold, until I can get back with the $12.... First place I stopped at, has a "Junk Rescue" in the basement level....Had quite a few things I would have liked to take home....didn't have enough cash in the pocket...wound up spending a whopping $3 + tax on this "Corker" Legs are just under 8" long....has been sharpened a few times, and will need it again. First off, that ugly black paint job has got to go.. Maybe this weekend, I can get the plane out, too? Fred W. Popular Post steven newman
Black paint has been removed. Moving parts have been oiled. Points are now sharp, again. Found a maker's name! Scioto Tool Co.! Stamped as an 8" divider. No numbers on the quadrant, though. There is a "Fine Adjust" screw. Works with the leaf spring. With the bolt on the quadrant tight, you can still adjust in or out, with the fine adjust nut. Loosen or tighten it, and the spring can move the points a bit. Might have been made in Columbus, OH. , sometime before the 1913 Flood? Need to get the plane to the shop...a quick look showed it to be a type 16, made just before WW2. Not too bad of a day... steven newman
The hand plane arrived today.... With too much "patina" to suit me... A Stanley No. 4c, Type 16... Yeah,,,patina.....spent a little over an hour cleaning up this little plane.. Parts is parts. I left the Rosewood handles alone, for now. Iron is a replacement, not the original....no biggie Iron was sharpened to 2000 grit, for now. Only had 2 hours sleep, last night...wasn't moving too good. First test drive showed that SOMEONE didn't tighten the bolts for the frog... Had to take it apart, and tighten things down...gave them an extra "tweak" just in case.... Next test drive.. Poplar scrap. Was a bit better than Hard Maple. Will need to finish the sharpening ...sometime. Not too bad a plane...for $12.87 ( counting sales tax)? Grandpadave52, Fred W. Grandpadave52
Sweet plane especially since it's a corrugated version. A Great buy IMHO at $12+. When I find them around here, most a $10-$15 and have way more patina (rust than yours did). In fact, I figure by the time the rust would be removed there wouldn't be much left. Guess you need to start construction of plane tote II steven newman
