Popular Post Steve Krumanaker Posted July 26, 2017 Popular Post Report Posted July 26, 2017 I've been wanting to add some color to some of my turnings and posted a little about that earlier. At the time I was working on another decorative platter and have just put the sealer coat on it. Probably should've waited and taken better pictures but I wanted to share and got impatient. The platter is soft maple, turned to about 1/8" thick and about 12" diameter. My original thought for the center motif was to use water color paint. After several practice pieces I just wasn't getting the "pop" I was after and decided to use aniline dye. It is definitely a more robust color. The sky, the tree, the animals, and the bottom are pyrography. The underside I was excited about doing this piece there are several things I really like about it. Even so, I'm just not sure it "works". Steve Jari, HARO50, Chips N Dust and 6 others 9 Quote

HandyDan Posted July 27, 2017 Report Posted July 27, 2017 Another great piece Steve. I thought about you today. I was in a consignment store today and there was a small work bench and a Foredom motor and rotary tool was mounted to it. I thought they were out of line on price at $140.00. Grandpadave52 Posted July 28, 2017 Report Posted July 28, 2017 Incredible Steve. The choice to go with the aniline dye for the color was the right decision. The color is spectacular. Your artistic talent amazes me! Steve Krumanaker 1 Quote

Depending on the model, that probably wasn't a bad price, especially if it had any bits with it. Steve Grandpadave52 1 Quote

How thin is it? Hi Gerald. It's about 1/8" thick. It's patterned after a Polynesian style vessel. According to what I read, the weave is normally done with water hyacinth reed and the splines are metal. Steve Cal, Gerald and Grandpadave52 3 Quote

Gerald Posted July 28, 2017 Report Posted July 28, 2017 Steve are you using power carver ? If so what bit did you use to get the sharp corners? Steve Krumanaker 1 Quote

Gerald, there isn't really any carving except for the pierced areas. For that I use a cheap knock off dental hand piece from Ebay. A person can buy one for less than 15 bucks. Do an Ebay search for NSK Pana Max 4 hole. The burs I get from http://bursforcarving.com/ I think they about 9. mil in diameter. After I get done with the piercing there is a fair bit exacto knife and needle file work to clean up the edges. Steve Grandpadave52 1 Quote
