Larry Buskirk
@lew I'll let you know when my eyes return to their sockets. LarryS and FlGatorwood
PeteM
Too cool! Optical illusions are just that: they twist the brain. The more you look at it (and measure it), the less the brain misinterprets. Lew doesn't see the curves anymore (smart brain). It jumps off the page to the rest of us. PeteM
You might also check out "diy drum sander". Also "SandFlee sander". I have a SandFlee, and I love the simultaneous jointing and sanding action. However it is not a thickness planer. I see a lot of instructions on how to use a bandsaw to resaw and veneer. Wouldn't the bandsaw do 1/8" slices?

Yes, easily, but the problem is that the surface is not smooth enough to create perfectly tight glue joints on the rolling pin ellipses. Gene Howe
We have one of Lew's French pins and THERE AIN'T NO GAPS twixt his layers. Which attests to the worthiness of his drum sander. Those lucky enough to own a Shopsmith might find this blog about a thickness sander interesting. https://www.lumberjocks.com/shipwright/blog/26701 lew
Kevin Beitz
Wow... Kool... Did you ever think about adding a feed belt? Look into Zero-max drives. https://www.zero-max.com/cd-adjustable-speed-drives#1 lew

Those little gear boxes will give you 0 to 1/2 output of what ever you feed to the input side. Once you set the speed control lever it stays at that speed and will not change with the load. You can find them cheap on e-bay. Great for many builds. They come in different Hp sizes. lew
Larry Buskirk
@lew, Very interesting blog on the drum sander. ...I wonder if my neighbor still has the rollers off of the wringer washer he scrapped out. Just might have to make one to fit my old lathe.
