In a machine shop on any machine with a head stock ( or table)  that can be tilted  that's a regular operation. It's called "tramming the head."

All one needs is a little test indicator and a bent hunk of 1/4"  round steel.

Last week, I spent some time going through some old magazines from the '90s.  Especially amused by the shop tips each issue.  Two things:

1. Didn't every one know that?

2. Same old contributors every issue.   One that I always chuckle over is a guy from my little home town.   Think he spends all his time tinkering and not much time building.

A great idea...I like using a straight rod and a square.  If the square is good enough for my other tools, it's good enough for the drill press.  (Otherwise the other tools would get "square-envy")  :)
