Popular Post honesttjohn
Since this is a forum with a heavy emphasis on patriotism I figured we should have something for those who served in the military. These are the first two I tried. Was also thinking of possibly combining something like this with a bottom "tail" that could be carved with someone's name, dates of service, places of service, or anything one would want. These are cut from 15" blanks. Sizes can be increased to 18 or even 24 inch I would think. honesttjohn
I keep hearing that time means nothing when you're retired. Gotta do something while I wait for the "end". lol Artie and Grandpadave52

difalkner
Looks nice, HJ! Are these for someone, prototypes, or just because? David honesttjohn
honesttjohn
Basically, prototypes David. I usually get asked for something like this a couple of times during a show. Figured I'd take a couple for each branch and see what happens. Working on a blank now that would let me add some text of some kind and "personalize" them too. difalkner, Artie and Grandpadave52
Gene Howe
Those are really, really great. Some sign makers (CNCers and others) around here, use black spray primer and then sand it off, leaving the recesses black. honesttjohn
You get a lot of bleeding in the wood (especially pine and spruce) that way and the paint doesn't always sand off clean. I still have to sand but only along the paint lines. Edited April 10, 2018 by honesttjohn Grandpadave52 and Artie
difalkner
I spray sanding sealer on the entire piece, sometimes two coats, then use thick acrylic in the recessed areas. I get virtually no bleed when I do that. I don't use Pine but I do this on Maple and it works just fine, so it'll probably work on Pine, too. But I'm set up to spray sealers and lacquers so it's pretty easy for me to do that. You could probably rattle can it without much issue. honesttjohn
A lot depends how deep the cuts are too. If you have some shallow cuts, heavy sanding screws it up.
Gene Howe
The guys I know use pine, cedar and redwood, mostly. I misspoke earlier...mea culpa... They use Marsh Ink from Zoro Tools. AFIK they don't use a sealer. Artie
honesttjohn
I've used Marsh Ink a couple times. Acrylic paint looks a whole lot better. IMO Artie

Room for a name and another line or two and still focuses on the insignia. Pic was off the computer screen. - not great quality.
