Popular Post lew
Well, if you haven't gotten your significant other a Valentine's present by now, I hope you can get comfortable sleeping next to the lathe for the next several days @RustyFN showed us his first turned lidded box and it is gorgeous. Read about it here and check out the comments from our turners- Carl Jacobson turned a floating vase, about a month ago. Notice his use of Easy Wood Tools and the Easy Wood chuck! I think if I hadn't learned to turn, I might have tried my hand at painting. I always marveled at the painters on public television when they created a picture. Although he has passed away, Bob Ross was one I enjoyed. That's probably why I found this Tim Yoder turning video so amusing- Some of you may have an income from your turning. With tax season upon us, I thought this video from Mike Peace may be of interest- Check some of the comments, with the video, on YouTube. Several respondents were folks who worked as tax consultants and they added additional information. Rick turnes added his list of videos for January 2018- The Woodworking Show is going to be in Kansas City, MO this weekend- February 16 and 17. Our most generous sponsor Easy Wood Tools will be there! Check here for additional information- Click on the above image to link to more information. I have been playing with a little holly bowl. The wood came from a tree that was planted, in 1969, at the school where I taught. The tree had been cut back many times over the years due to size a weather damage so none of the trunk pieces were extremely large- although the base near the ground is close to 2 feet across. I turned the bowl green- the outside shape one evening and finished the inside the next day. The wall thickness is about 3/16". There were a couple of stress cracks in the log before I started but they didn't get any larger after completion. The inertia sander I made works great! The pictures are before any finish is applied. I'm using rattle can lacquer but need to get a buffing wheel to smooth the surface of the spray. You can see the bowl went from round to slightly oblong during the process. When it is finished, I'll give it to the school. I still have a couple more chunks and also a holly natural edge bowl but some of the bark split off during the final turning. I also finished up the piece I was turning from Manzanita. It had that large void that I filled with Alumilite. I couldn't get the "bowl" part polished as well as I would have liked. Everything went south when I tried to use Micromesh pads. I guess it was the difference in the density between the wood and acrylic. Also the pads left traces of their color on the wood. I should mention that I did not stabilize the Manzanita. I'm calling this one "Crater" because it reminds me of a volcano. Finally, I guess someone likes my rolling pins. Got this in the mail today- Who a thunk it?? Safe turning p_toad, Grandpadave52, Cal and 4 others 5

Too bad "little Steve" couldn't quite get the hang of turning! I still catch episodes of Bob from time-to-time on our local PBS stations. 49 minutes ago, lew said: Finally, I guess someone likes my rolling pins. Got this in the mail today- Congratulations. Well deserved recognition...What took them so long anyway? As always a great weekly update even for us non wood spinners...maybe some day if Steve can stop by and show me a few tricks. Popular Post Gerald
Another great post. I made this today for my Valentine . Carl did. Video on my YouTube feed I just watched last night so I modified it to match our rings. That is mine in the pic and after almost 48 years is a little worn. And Lew if you keep getting these awards we will have to raise your pay and I don't know if we can afford it. HandyDan
If it is someone you like $5.00. Someone you don't like $500.00. I always give my stuff away. If someone says they like it I say take it because then I have room to make something else. Dadio, Cal, lew and 1 other 2
DAB
someone saw another one i made (pic), and contacted me to have me make a bowl. i already had the blank glued up, intending to do a bandsaw box, but that became this bowl. he said he'll pay for it. so now i have to assign a price. i don't recall what i paid for that lumber long ago. 1x8 cherry, four 8" squares. that's 8x8x4/144= 1.8 board feet of cherry. say at $6/BF, that's about $11 worth of materials. $200? p_toad and lew

I tried selling my rolling pins, at an artist co-op, in an affluent area (VMI area). Put a price tag of $90 (the co-op took $30 of that). Sold 1. Now I ask considerably less- when I sell one. Covers the cost of materials (wood, sanding supplies, finish) but not much else. Grandpadave52
DAB
took an informal survey of some friends. they had prices from $25 to $170, most under $50. people have no idea what custom work is worth. "hey, here's $50, make me a bowl of cherry." "make your own. that kind of money is not worth my time for a stranger." you'll need a lathe, some turning tools, appropriate accessories for the lathe, sand paper, finish, and most importantly, "know how". i have "know how", do you? sorry, you can't borrow mine. you'll have to get that the same way i got mine: practice. have a nice day. Well it does depend on the size of the bowl . But yes most of my bowls I would price from 35 to 65 with hollow forms even higher or bowls over 9 inch higher. And if I add embellishment well the sky is the limit. Grandpadave52
HandyDan
The craft show mentality always kicks in for the buyers. "It's just wood isn't?" Grandpadave52 and DAB

"It's just wood isn't?" yes, you are right, it's just wood. here, i brought a blank, all you have to do is remove the parts that don't look like a bowl. that'll be $5 please. to a great artist: "it's just canvas and some paint, no more than $40 of materials and a small brush" "art store is down the block, help yourself to their supplies and do it yourself" i'm settling on a number in my mind. it's north of what has been offered above. too much you say? fine, keep your money, i'll keep my bowl.
