steven newman
Maybe later today, Imight sneak down to the shop, for a while. Still waiting on word from the van...... Maybe work on the rest of the corner posts, so they all match each other.....maybe the rails, as well....thumb willing. HARO50
steven newman
Now have the van back home....Fuel pump.....$$$...OUCH! Coil-pak was fine.....pump and filter are one ''unit"...double ouch, they have to drop the gas tank to change both. Walked the three "klicks" to pick the van up. DROVE back home. LUNCHTIME! Maybe after Lunch has a chance to settle, I might do a little woodworking? Too bloody hot to work on the Gazebo right now....stay tuned. Popular Post steven newman
Had to skinny a few rails down to match the thickness of the post....enter a plane.. Must have had it set up about right.... Look Ma, no tear out....worked on some grooves... Before and after the Stanley 45 went through....Had to raise the fence to get more room, between it and the top of my bench.. I put the rods through the lower holes. Part being molested? Is the rail at the top of each side....needed a little extra room behind it, so I can attach the top, later. And the other four. Single groove is the bottom rail. Tenons...first I find out the the ends are not quite square....had to mitre box to saw the ends square. Then lay out for a few cuts...tried the bandsaw, to save my shoulders a bit....not working too well....back to the old Langdon, again.. I ran the saw until it almost reached the grooves, then I could bandsaw the waste off a bit better.. Test fit a couple of them...as I had two mortises done....the rest will just have to wait awhile.. Yep, there are five rails....kept sweeping the floor.. But these just kept coming back.....ones from the 45 had a crunchy sound when I stepped on them... Take a good look around, and see IF you can find the most important tool in the shop..(hint? look to the left...) Decided to set up to plane the matching corner post...hmmm.. Just a tad wavy....( called a Tinner's Rule..) Marked a line along the straight edge.. This might take awhile....wonder which plane to use.... One on the left is an 0-7....the other? Stanley No. 8......I think I may use the smaller one.. And save that 10 pounder for another time....like when my thumb is healed up... Shoulders are sore, using parts of me not used to working this hard. Time for supper, and a Percasec....thumb has had enough fun for awhile. Maybe I can either joint this post, or chop a few mortises.....maybe crosscut a few blanks to make some raised panels....stay tuned HARO50, Grandpadave52, Chips N Dust and 2 others
Popular Post steven newman
Roh-kay....Hide from the GrandBRATS....Sharpen a pencil Not that skinny little thing, either... Need this to sharpen.. At least I can use a chisel for something useful.. Ok, I tried to use the Stanley No. 8...just could not grip it well enough to use it...Went with the Ohio Tool Co. No. 0-7 instead Made a mess (again) until I was getting full width shavings almost the entire length, note the shaving sitting by that little square.. This was the worst of the two edges, once I reached the line along the edge, I flipped the part over, and jointed the "good" edge Define "Good" At least it wasn't wavy...plane didn't take all that long, this time.. Gaining on it. Then came the Stanley 45.. The "bad edge" of the groove? Had this pointing the other way, going against the grain ( Dummy..) and a chip got between the part and the fence...turned it around, kept an eye out for wayward chips... Traced the foot detail onto the new stile..bandsaw to cut, beltsander and a spokeshave to clean up.. Then clamped the two stiles together, and adjusted this until both matched the other. While these were clamped up,where they wouldn't move around I could use the rails and a square to transfer the locations to the "new" stile. I could crosscut a couple panels, and check for fit.. Crosscut 1x 8 Maple in the Langdon? Not exactly....I cut almost all the way through on one...whew...then turned things over to the Bandsaw to finish things up. Thumb was starting to get sore.... Hauled enough planks to layout all 8 panels from. Then decided to just layout the last two stiles for tomorrow's ( MAYBE) shoptime adventures.. This was the better of the two. the one underneath is a lot worse. What dummy saws like that....oops Time to call it quits for the day. Go upstairs, have a Percocet and sit awhile. Can't run spinning sharp objects until that wears off. Need the thumb nice and chilled out next time, as there will be a mallet in use....mortises need done Stay tuned... Grandpadave52
You get more done with one hand tied up that I do with two good (although arthritic at times) hands. Just don't over do it. I'm not going anywhere anyway so I'll be following along however long it takes. HARO50 and steven newman
Popular Post steven newman
Got a wee bit more done this morning, before Lunch Break. Used the pine scrap to check how the grooves lined up...somehow got all the mortises done, on both stiles.. Had ONE tenon a hair too long....we have ways....I shifted the clamps a bit.. And stashed this frame out of the way, for now. Wanted to work on frame 2 Here is where things got...complicated. Remember that part called "Spare"? It no longer is a spare part. One of the "good" parts came out too short. Ran the Stanley 45 a bit...made a few tenons..rails have all been S4S to match the stiles. Decided to stop with these, and set up for the stiles.. Need to joint the edges to a line.. Or two. Get this done, I can mill the grooves, shape the feet. then set up for mortises. Maybe after Lunch? Stay tuned.. Grandpadave52
I fixed breakfast for the two grand-daughters and myself, read the paper, drank two travel mugs of coffee, took a shower, transported the youngest grand-daughter to the B&G Club in the county seat, ran a couple errands, got a large Chocolate Malt at DQ and came home...is that about the same as you got done before lunch today? steven newman, Cal, p_toad and 1 other
kmealy
I can introduce you to my friend, who will help you sort out those chisels and planes by width, type, length, and get a color coded system working. On second thought, they'll need to be replaced with ones that match brands & colors on the handles. ;-) http://thepatriotwoodworker.com/topic/20385-a-shop-to-build-projects-or-a-project-to-build-shops/#comment-118285 Edited July 28, 2017 by kmealy HARO50, Cal, p_toad and 1 other
Popular Post steven newman
Actually, I went back to the shop, after lunch was over.... Both of the remaining stiles have been S4S and a groove ran in each.. Made a pound or two of "Noodles" while I was at it.. Might be a tad crunchy, but they are Maple-flavoured Set those two aside, grooved the rails... Then cut a few tenons.. And set these aside....Marked a few lines.. Built a jig.. Now..when one goes about making Raised Panels, ala Paul Sellers... You must have the "proper" plane....Stanley No. 4c ( Made in England, no less... Yes, raised panels....I thought I'd at least try one.. I worked on both end grain ends first...yes, both are about done.... I rotated the blank 90 degrees, and worked along one edge... Tried a dry fit... And right about here...I ran out of "gumption"....figured I could continue this tomorrow... 6 hours IN the shop today....in need of a cold one....settled for a cup of ice and a Mountain Dew... Stay tuned.... lew, p_toad, HARO50 and 2 others

steven newman
Ok....Here is what LITTLE got done, today.. . Finished ONE raised panel, and tried to fit it....Two more blanks sitting there were crosscut and ripped to size ( I hope) and feet were made on the stiles. Two of these "Top" panels were sized, one is set in the jig....then got distracted with saw work.. Panel blanks #2 and #3 ariived from the bandsaw.... Two more are waiting to be ripped for width...one doesn't look too bad.. #3. Simple cut...as for the other one.. Might take a little extra work? Will need a "back Bevel" on the raised panels, so they sit in the grooves better. I also transferred the marks for the mortises to the next two stiles, hopefully they will line up with the ones I already made. Too much going on at once....time to step back, and decide where to focus on..... Stay tuned, Tuesday is just around the corner... Popular Post steven newman
Yeah, yeah, yeah...Shop is supposed to be closed on Mondays......had a few tools needing rehabbed....got that done....Hmmmm... This was still sitting there from Sunday....decided to try a few things differently.....and see IF I can stay focused.. Flipped this panel over and rejigged.. Decided to cut a rebate on the insides of the panels...Wards 78 because it has the fence.... Then cleaned up with an old shoulder plane...got all four edges done.. (this was after the bevel was done...)flipped the panel back over, and start the bevels.. I worked the ends first, both of them. Then rejigged for the edges I used this Junior Jack to get close, the the #4c to final fit. Top panel was done. The other two panels needed ripped to width...one was a bit wider at one end.. . I used both the jack and the smoother. Checked the ends, was a bit wavy...we have ways... Yep...NEED that fan. Not too worried about the edges..getting planed off, anyway.... Was just taking my time...double checking for fit, and finish...until a panel would wind up like this.. I think that will just have to do. I got all four of the panels for one side raised....and stashed out of the way.. They are not IN the frame, just sitting on their rebates. Stack sitting there is the other sides panels.....maybe another day's work? Had to sweep the floor, This was before I raised the fan up to where it would do some good... Wound up using that broom about 5 times....got tired of shavings crunching underfoot. Sorry, didn't get a whole lot done, today....maybe I can get a bit more done tomorrow? Stay tuned... steven newman
Thought about trying to do a glue up......not happening. Not enough hands. Bench still has the jig set up, and I have the panels for the other side to get raised....may go in the direction...tomorrow. I think I may be getting the hang of raising a panel..... Bought a few 1 x 2 x 8' at Lowes today....can start building webframes with those. May still try to buy a plank or two from a friend of mine...coming up about a plank short... Stay tuned...
