Two of the "five" would be half width drawers at the top. Frame and panel sides....raised panels. I have a decent supply of 4/4 Maple I cut rip to make the four posts....have a supply of 3/4" for the panels and drawer fronts...plenty ( I hope ) of thinner Poplar for drawer sides. May buy a sheet of 1/4" plywood for the bottoms of the drawers....and the back of the case.. May add some of the Black Walnut as edging for the top? maybe use it as the "dividers" between the drawers? 7 bf should be enough? Primary wood will be that Curly Maple I have just sitting around.... Moral of this post? Painkiller induced naps produce some wild dreams... As soon as I can draw again with this bad thumb. I may do a few drawings to work from...IF anyone wants to see them.. Board is a full 4/4" thick, just over 13" wide, and a hair over 49" long....Walnut around the edges? Breadboard ends and a front and back strip? Walnut 1x4s, and some 3/8" thick poplar planks...maybe drawer sides? About half of the supply of Maple, some is 4/4, for the pieces to make the sides' frames. Others in there for the raised panels and drawer fronts. Can't even use a pencil right now...will try to use the left hand...might be ugly...stay tuned. Popular Post steven newman Posted July 24, 2017 Author Popular Post Report Share Posted July 24, 2017 (edited) Ok, just can't stay out of the shop.....decided to at least haul the two narrower 4/4" boards to the shop...that WAS the plan Got out a ruler ( tape measure) and did a bit of "dividing" From the Hook on the end, I moved the tape around until some sort of layout involving 4 pieces came out....8".....Made marks at 2, 4 and 6" to get four equal sections....Thought I was done.... Nope....set up the jig on the bandsaw. . Roughly 1-7/8" between the two. Hmmm, might at least TRY the cuts.... So..now I have four blanks for four corner posts....The board underneath is for 10 rails to go between the posts Since it might be a day or two before I venture back down there. I clamped the four together I had even thought about removing these marks.. With one of these things. .. But, the thumb vetoed the idea... Need to crosscut the other board, then resaw it. To make a frame to house raised panels made from boards like this As soon as I figure out what sizes I need.......might be a while before I get really going...but, stay tuned.... Van started twice. went to run some errands. first stop, van started fine...stopped for Lunch...no longer starts....Had it towed. Got home,van-less.....tried to install a new saw blade on my Skil Home Saw.....got the wrong blade....means a trip back to Menards, and pay the extra for the 6" blade, after returning the 6-1/2" blade... Got a good look at the thumb, sans brace....thumb was BENT....this is not good... Awaiting the mechanic's bill for the van....Mondays can bite you in the .... Popular Post steven newman Posted July 25, 2017 Author Popular Post Report Share Posted July 25, 2017 Well, I did get bored...nothing else to do but try a few things....as noted above, I gave this old saw a workout.. Made a few parts as well..between the bandsaw and circular saw... Rather a rough looking bunch? Was just going to let these set......and yet... IF I keep the planes on the small side, and do a lot of the leveling work with the beltsander... And clamp the parts in the vise like this....I could even plane Left-handed. Took awhile, but I managed to get the main rails done. Still have to do the "spare" one...there is even a bit of grain showing off.. Swept the floor... Igor does a decent enough job Which leaves these four parts... The 36" long corner posts may be a challenge to plane smooth...I also need to set this plane up.. And figure out how to set up for a lefty? Well, a wee bit got done, in spite of it being Monday...maybe tomorrow will be a better day? Stay tuned... steven newman Posted July 25, 2017 Author Report Share Posted July 25, 2017 Would have been safer for the thumb? Thumb Update: Brace is gone, replaced with a plastic splint, taped in place. Wear that for about three weeks, and do a re-check. I broke OFF a chip on the right side of the bone, about where the nail starts... Splints seems to allow me to use the hand more, but the thumb sticks straight out....like I am a hitch-hiker. Tried out a couple planes today....needed to set up the Stanley 45 to plough some grooves.. I used the "spare" rail to check the groove for center... Close? The fence has a Micro-adjuster, to perfect the set up... Used the plane almost like normal, except the thumb sticking out to the side... Set up to joint the corner posts...at least one, anyway. Pound the part into that hook thingy, called a crochet, and lock into the leg vise.. Afraid my Jointer is a "cordless" model....No. 0-7....made decent enough shavings, though.. Again, thumb sticking straight out to the side, keeping it out of the way. Got both edges jointed...thought I'd try this out.. Had to adjust the fence a hair...to get it more in the center. There was a problem or two, though... At the far end, I hit the crochet....at the other end.. I hit the jaw of the leg vise.....may have to make this groove in stages.... That is about as far as I got...before Lunch. Letting the thumb "chill out" for a while, and then see IF I can motivate to the shop, again... Coil-pak on van replaced, getting spark, no gas going in...plugged fuel filter? Still hitching a ride...or walking....not much else to do...now. Stay tuned.. steven newman Posted July 26, 2017 Author Report Share Posted July 26, 2017 Kept going on a few parts....got the groove in the corner post finished. And laid out where the 5 rails will go. Top rail is an inch wide than the other four.....Laid out according to the widths of the two planks I will be using for panels. And marked a 3/8" deep groove.. Once they were all laid out, I could add a "foot" detail.. Bandsawn, and beltsanded to shape. Decided to do a little digging.... To see how a mortise will go... 1" deep, so...I cut a tenon on the spare rail.. And a trial fit.. Could be better...will serve as a pattern for the rest... I had one rail with a big old knot,,,,I can bury it on the inside of the bottom rail. Only needs one groove, too... Turned out, this rail is also fatter the the corner post...groove will be a hair wide..but, I can deal with that... There is the knot, this rail also gets a haunched tenon, fills a gap in the groove.
