Made the lumber Run today....Cheapest 2 x 4 x8' was..$3.15....at Lowes.. Got three and a 2'x4' panel of 1/4" plywood. Good thing I get a 10% discount for my Mil. ID... Got the "Treasures" down to the shop, and let them sit awhile....had other things to do... had four more blanks to surface S4S.. Used a couple larger planes for that job ( and you'll what the camera is doing, too) That be a Stanley No.5-1/2, sitting in front of a stanley No. 6c Apparently, the "Macro" setting was still on? Or not.. Anyway, i got the four blanks looking decent enough.. seems to be a lot of glare off the overhead light, too. Decided to give the Stanley 45 a good run for it's money... Got going too fast and rough on one edge...and the depth stop came off the cutter. Got to checking the cutter....yuck, instead of a flat bevel, it has a rounded bevel...like a beer belly. Will take the time tomorrow to straight that out. Decided I could drill a hole into each end( tenons go there, anyway) and attach the blank to the side of the bench. Needed to counter sink the holes a bit, so the fence won't hit the screws.. Need to resize this one down, camera makes too big a picture. Brace is a 6" Keen Kutter, by Millers falls. Anyway, Once the blank was set up.. I could pound away with the 45. Once each blank was done, time to make some tenons on the ends. BTW: I cleaned the rebate with an older plane.. So,..tenons. I used the first blank to mark out where the tenons would be. Took the blank around to the mitre box and cut the shoulders... Has a stop cut set just about right. Once both ends were cut, I could walk back around to the bench, and do the cheek cut.. And let the waste drop off. Cleaned up with a chisel.. Kept trying to find out which setting worked the best, depending on how close I was....not always working out. I got two with both edges done, and one for the bottom of the side. The bottom and top blanks only have one molded edge. Legs started to get crampy....and even the ribs. Time to call it a day. Of the two blanks left to do ( out of five) both will be either a bottom or a top blank. Too many knots. New 2x4 should be able to give me a few knot-free blanks, I hope. Popular Post steven newman Posted January 10, 2017 Author Popular Post Report Share Posted January 10, 2017 Ok, over in the thread about setting up the Stanley #45, I detailed what I had to do to tune it up. I got the plane getting a lot better...but still needed a few other planes to tune the cuts.. Not too worried about those screw holes, either. When I trim for the tenon, most of the holes get buried in the joint. I even managed to get 5 rails done...only to find out I need a sixth one.. With these, I can only build a 4 drawer chest of drawers. Looks like I will need a bunch more made up....like 7 more! Decided to at least start on a resaw of two of the corner posts...Cordless Circular saw to cut two out of a 2 x 4 x 8' board. These will need to be skinnied down to 1" thick, by 3" wide and then the 45 will get used on the "best" edge. Hopefully NOT where them knots are. Lunch break at the moment..maybe back at it later? I didn't get the expensive "pink" ones up in the front of the store, I went back to the "cheap" ones. Lew, New Camera! old one was just about shot. Smoothing after the camber jack got done.... Hungry beasty. Then jointed the edges, a bit.. The big plane on it's side to the right? Stanley No.7c Made use of the crochet to help hold things in place. Chose the best edge for the next step.... I used the Stanley 45 to mold a good profile. Test fit showed the corner post was a bit fatter than I wanted.....no biggie, I can adapt to that. These corner posts also have a detail down at the "foot" Leaves a 1" x 1" pad for the floor. The bottom rail will be at the other end of the angled cut. Need to make the other three posts, AND six more rails. Well...I do have all week for that....... Popular Post steven newman Posted January 11, 2017 Author Popular Post Report Share Posted January 11, 2017 Ok, went to the "stores" today, including LUNCH! Brought back a NEW blade for the bandsaw! While taking the old, DULL blade out, I also found a chunk of 1/4' wide saw blade wedged inside.... Circular saw ( cordless) to rough cut a 2x4 down to sizes needed for more rails. I already had resawn the second corner post.....meh, still taking a while to cut stuff 3-1/2" tall on the saw. Used the stanley 358 to get some parts to their final lengths.. Used a second saw, this time, as it had a bit more blade under the spine. It actually cut all the way through. Set these aside while I figured where to make a few resaw cuts at. After the first blank took too long to peel a 1/4" x 3-1/2" slab off....I went with a different "plan" ( had a few plan changes today..) Decided to cut through the blanks in the 1-1/2" direction. Then resaw for the main cut. Much easier to resaw through 2" of pine. Got all five blanks resized.. 1" x 2" more or less.....Set these aside for a bit....decided to try a chisel for a bit.. as this needed dug out.. I had a BIG 3/8" wide Mortise chisel. Got things set up to where things didn't bounce around. Finally decided that it was deep enough.. But, there was a problem with this set up, once i place the tenon into it's home.. It needed to be flush with the inside of the post......so, time for "Plan Boris" I will come back a "daylight " that mortise. the rest of the rails will sit in stopped dados. Laid one out here. Need things flush on the inside, so panels made from this, will fit.. I'll cut out pans to fit from this 2' x 4' slab. Two hours of shop time today.....might try for a bit more after Supper?
